View Full Version : MK4 arrived!

MK4 arrived last night via Stewart. My buddy Greg came over to help and check things out. We had a great time unloading this car and checking out a GTM and coupe on the truck. Total unload time was 1-1/2 hours, but it was probably 30 minutes of real work and an hour of talking about cars and FFR! Anyone that's lucky enough to get Scott as a driver will certainly agree that he's a hoot and he does a great job.

I've got dozens of photos but looks like I'm limited to posting 4 on this post. First one is the body on the body buck. I designed a C shaped shelf that holds the separate body buck on top. Did this so I could roll the chassis underneath the body without opening the garage door, rolling the car out, and then rolling it back inside. The other benefit is I can lift the low profile body buck and body off the shelf and roll it onto a trailer to take to the painter. If my calculations are correct, the white paint job should add 4 MPH to the top end and shave 1/2 second off the 1/4 mile! Same for the FFR logo! This setup worked out great, but in retrospect it was a 3 man job lifting the body and buck on top so a big thanks to my buddy Rick for doing the work of 1-1/2 men.

Second photo is my 2-1/2 year old daughter in the car. She's every bit as excited as I am about the new arrival, but she keeps asking me to put the steering wheel on. I may have to find a way to temporarily attach it to keep her happy while I work on other things.

Third photo is the Coyote in the crate. Beautiful engine and I look forward to dropping this in the car in a few months.

Fourth photo is the body on frame as it arrived. I frickin' love it! Looks like a ferrari 250 when I squint (and I did a lot of squinting and day dreaming today). I was planning to do a light silver blue, but I'm seriously considering red right now. I'll wrestle over color for the next 6 months or so. Talking about day dreaming . . . my wife went to a scrapbooking show and I "worked" for 5 hours today, but all I did was move a couple boxes around, remove a few panels, and put the body on the buck. Did I really spend the majority of time daydreaming? Yep.

And the fun begins . . .

Thanks guys. Delivery took longer than expected and I'm not good at waiting so I occupied my time by building and painting the body buck.

David (Lucky) - I haven't even begun to think about the intake space problem yet. Like everything else on the Coyote, I just have faith that solutions will be available in a few months when I'm ready to drop that bad boy in there. Good to see you're active on the forum. You'll be home and wrenching on your anniversary car before you know it and you'll appreciate it that much more.

Dave - Contratulations on the new addition. Those first few days with a FFR in the garage are great - lots of visitors and packages to open. Enjoy it, but get ready to get down to work. Keep watching for graduation photos, too, as those provide great encouragement to keep the project moving forward.

Here are some additional pics. It was a great time. I have a unfinished MK2 that I am working on. Seeing a unfinished MK4 was a lot of fun. FFR has done a nice job with the new body. The seems were very impressive and I like the chassis upgrades.

Coolest body buck I have seen... Do you have plans for it? Or did you just wing it?

Congrats Dave, I look forward to seeing your "build" topic.
Stewart called me Saturday and told me mine's on the truck, but they didn't finishing loading the truck so it wouldn't hit the road until today! (nuts!)

They told me they were loading 10 kits on. Wow, that's a lot of parts!

what's your chassis #?

You were the stop after my brother Phil. Congratulations! Is yours a 15 year anniversary model too?

Thanks again guys. Bob, I'll post more pics and dimensions of the body buck after I make a couple small adjustments. It's a tight fit to allow the chassis underneath while still allowing the garage door to be opened above the car. MPTech, I've got chassis # 7447.

Hey David, I know, I was reading your threads on the anticipated delivery and they only made me more anxious to get my car! I went with a standard car because I wanted IRS. I do have silver chassis envy though :-)

...and my brother doesn't know it yet but he'll have IRS envy. I have IRS and LOVE it! Can't wait to get his together so i can feel the difference.
Interesting that you have 7447. My brother's is 7471. I'm still wondering if they did the anni's with a block of numbers...

I saw the Coyote pic. Awesome. Are you going with 17" rims? Is your IRS pin drive width?

:)

Long story short, it took Stewart almost 6 weeks to deliver my car, hence the reason 7447 and 7471 arrived within a day of each other. I'd simply recommend anyone shipping these cars to get a guarantee on the window of delivery. I'd use Stewart again, but with a guarantee of 4 weeks max.

Yep, going with the 17" Halibrands. Standard width rear, not pin drive. I'm building a gentleman's street car, not a track car. Well, if you can call 412HP and 2000 lbs a gentleman's car :-)

I did see a intake at American Muscle for the coyote, it looks like it will work. Its a C&L cold air intake made just for the 2011 coyote. Oh and theres no way I can appreciate it any more than I do, not a day goes by that Im not planing or reading up on my future build. I have wanted one of these sence I was 17 and most of the Cobra kits were using VW frames!!!! If I asked God to let me win one thing in my life (and I did over and over) it would be to win a Roadster. Cant wait to follow your build and one day meet you and your family. Once again Congrats!!!! Live the Dream!!!! Good Luck and keep in touch Brother!!!!

What a great feeling it must be to see that truck pull up in front of your house! Congrats and I look forward to watching your build progress.

I live on a newer, narrow street with a couple bends so it was actually a little scary to see a 53 foot trailer try to get down the street! Scott, the Stewart driver, did a great job and made it out without sideswiping any cars. Access to your house is definitely something to keep in mind.

Hey Dave, CONGRATS man... really sorry for the delay in reply. Guys, Daves a good friend of mine. He even came down from OR one weekend to help on the GTM build. That was one fun weekend!

Man, I just LOVE that body buck. That is one trick setup there and looks like its really going to help with space. Man, just one problem I see... garage is way to clean :D

Really looking forward to seeing your progress on this project...

Whats in store for this weekend?

Hey David,

Thanks for the compliments - means a lot coming from you bud! That GTM build weekend was the best and here I am 5 years later building my own car. You're FFR's best "salesman"!

Got the F panels on, but I spent a few hours today just reorganizing the garage and putting boxes away. You were right that it's hard to have too many shelves. It's time consuming to open the boxes, unwrap parts, and inventory them so this could take a full day (or more with beer). I ordered 2 footbox panels on Friday (needed for the Coyote install). We missed this in the original order but FFR will send along with the backordered parts so that's cool. Today I put a deposit down on a Thunderbird rear end that will be delivered on Monday. Aluminum carrier was a nice surprise as many of them are steel. I didn't realize that the IRS install happens so early in the build process so I need to get rolling on that rebuild. I'll just be happy to exit the weekend with a clean garage so I can move around and do some real work on the car during the week.

Great pix, one word of caution. DO NOT install any of the aluminum until it is in the way. The Fanels not being installed makes fitting the hood sooooo much easier, do not take them off now but you see my point. Same with floors etc, the trans mount is much easier without the floors in place. Finding any leaks in fuel or brakes is much easier without all the panels installed in the back.

We fit and drill every panel and the frame in the first few days except those that go on with the body (rad aluminum and splash panels) and then put them aside until we have to put them in. When we go cart the only panels in are the driver and passenger inner footboxes and nothing else. Floors are sitting in place so we do not fall out but it makes checking the motion of everything very easy when you can see it.

Resist the urge to 'do something' by just installing a panel here or there, it take almost no time to final rivet the panel later. JMHO, Richard.

Always prefit and drill any aluminum panel then remove it and clean out the drill waste. You won't believe how much can get under panels.

It's like Christmas when the car arrives!:D The first of many exciting steps along the way.

Where's the vroom vroom picture of you sitting in the car? Isn't that mandatory?;)

Other than IRS, what options did you order, such as heater, wipers, etc?

Run the fuel and brake lines first, then work on installing steering rack, suspension, brakes, (front and rear), gas tank, and wire harness installation. Those will keep you busy for awhile.. Like Richard suggests, resist riveting any aluminum on, just use Clecos for now.

Have fun!

Guys, thanks for the tips on delaying panel installs. I have the F panels on with Cleco's - should have clarified that. I'll definitely hold off on riveting now.

Bill, I kept the options light - spent my money on the IRS. But I did get the usual things like visors, chrome roll bar, wind wings, and floor mats. Also got heaters, but I"m thinking I should have looked into seat warmers instead. One thing I regret is getting vinyl seats - I should have just got the leather ones I wanted - I'll call FFR to see what my options are and hope I won't lose my shirt in upgrading now.

I was moving boxes around the garage today and noticed someone at FFR (presumably) wrote "nice car dude" with a smiley face on one box. Good sense of humor and it put a smile on my face. Gotta love those guys.

Nothing better than seeing a garage door open with something going on other than a lawnmower. Pretty exciting. Enjoy the build, it's the best part. Especially raising hell up and down the neighborhood street in a go-cart. Keep us posted on the build.

Hey Dave, mine arrived Monday (4/4), looks like it was just in front of yours in the build process, I'm #7446. (I ordered mine 1/17).

I ordered:

Base Kit
Powder Coating
no body cut-outs
front LCAs
IRS
302 ceramic headers
17" Halibrands (not pin-drive)
DS Chrome Roll-bar
PS Chrome Roll-bar
blank dash
I left the stock seats, but planning to upgrade to Corbeau's (probably TRS or LG1)

my headers, roll-bars, and threaded rod for IRS were back ordered, I don't think that's too bad.

what did you get?
