That Coupe is without doubt the slam dunk best applicant possible for plank membership. Kit owners can now say their's is a replica of the #1 Historic Vehicle.

It's going to bring a lot of history to the newer generations of car enthusiasts. The Coupe's accomplishments haven't been trumpeted nearly enough. It was and still is the epitome of pre-CAD car building.

It was digitized, too, and that will be available for download.

Great to hear more recognition for the coupe, which has been overshadowed by the GT-40 for so many years.

Pretty cool being vehicle one in the register. However, I would presume that any vehicle on this list should be pretty special!

I wasn't aware that this list was going to be created, but it will be interesting to see what other cars join the Coupe on the list.

Thanks for posting Austexican!

Steve

I was lucky to go to the DC show last Fri and talk to the two guys there. Bill3422 and I spent at least 30 minutes w/ them and they were both very informative.

Here are some more photos ... the bulk of the photos are going to be on my photography website (www.carlwilliamsimages.com) under Cobras.

This car has the only body made in the U.S. with the other 5 cars having their bodies made in Italy. It is pretty rough but considering it was put together by a bunch of hot rodders in So Cal in 90 days, it ain't to bad. The body has not been restored.

The connections on the PS to the rear of the front wheel are for the air jacks.

According to the folks at the booth the tires are original to the car last time it ran on the Bonneville Flats

The best view is from the front low ...

Photo #1 is not only the air plug for the jacks but the other plug is for cooling water. The reason I know is due to a conversation with Peter Brock after reading his book on CSX2601 and questioning him on some of the original items as my coupe is modeled after CSX2601. CSX2601 has them mounted on the cowl instead of the vent and I imitated this installation, albeit non working but it does add a small touch of realism. I did fabricate them in such a manner that if I decided to add air jacks (very expensive) I could do so. I guess when they came into the pits after running at those high speeds the engines tended to over heat so they plugged in a water hose line with an air fitting on the end. He told me the fittings on the car were male and female so they wouldn't inadvertantly plug water into the air jacks and vice versa. I forget which one was which. Probably the male was air as most air hoses have female ends that plug into equipment.

Bill,

Thanks for the clarification and update.

Where the air jacks actually used during pit stops?

Where they spring loaded to "fail" in the retracted position?

After finishing my roadster I see a coupe as a next build.

I've got my Shelby book on loan, so I can't check the photos, however I believe if they had them, which they did, I can't imagine not using them. That said, if you look closely at CSX2601 pictures in the book " Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2601" put out by Peter Brock, page 9 shows what appears to be quick jack fitments at both front and rear. Also on page 23 there is a good close up of the rear quick jack fitments. Now on page 32 there is a very good close up of the afore mentioned air and water connectors. So your guess is as good as mine as to whether this was used at all tracks or only on some. That will be a good topic for my next conversation with Peter as I want to order the new book out by Dick Morton but I haven't been able to connect this week. They must be on a trip. As to the fail safe question, I again would think each air cylinder would have a return spring when air is removed that once the weight is off the cylinder it would retract and stay in that position until activated again. Having never seen one close up, I couldn't swear to this. Probably one might be able to go online and check one out. I imagine a company like Pegasus Racing would have them.
