Guys,

I have ordered the FFR heater/demister kit along with my Mk4 order. I plan to get a glovebox from Breeze or **********. Will there be any issue with space? Is there a clearance issue behind the dash at the glovebox location?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks
Ian

Short answer. Yes, you will have space issues with both a heater and a glove box. Typically they don't go together without some adjustments. There is a firewall forward kit that provides more space behind the dash. This would be one possibility. http://www.ffmetal.com/FirewallForwardKit.html There is also at least one glovebox kit that is purposely very thin allowing for more space behind the dash. There may be others, but this is the one I'm aware of. http://acroadsterinteriors.com/Gloveboxes.htm Personally I really like Alex's gloveboxes because they also come with new dash vinyl which is very nice and perfectly matches the vinyl on the glovebox door. Makes a very neat and sanitary installation. Used the standard glovebox on my Mk4 build. I have the ********** glovebox in my Mk3. It's a nice piece, but the color and texture is just enough different from the FFR dash vinyl that I notice it. Not a big deal though.

Thanks Ed.

So can I use the shallow glovebox without using the firewall kit?

Yes. You would need to check if that gives enough room though.

I did it (FFR Heater and the shallow glove box from Alex's Cobra Interiors). Its tight but it works. The glove box is only 3/4" deep though - I wanted it just for the car registration and maybe my wallet/phone.

Thanks guys. Only 3/4" deep! They weren't kidding saying'shallow' !
Wonder if the heater can go elsewhere. Maybe build a dash extension so it meets the tunnel.

Some pics...

There isn't any hinges either. It has pins to locate it and it lifts out...

1.5" from back wall of glove box to the face of the dash but the door is 3/4" so yep, 3/4" of space inside...

Just barely enough room for AC/Heater control knobs.

I copied some one's idea I saw on the forum and made a box to move the heater forward 2 inches. This allowed a 3 inch deep glove box. The firewall forward might have been a better option as it would have allowed more room behind the dash for things. The passenger side defrost duct had to be modified to work.

Good Luck

Norm,
Does this mean a regular depth glove box will fit?
I see you're fairly close to me - I'm in Calgary. Maybe I should come take a look!

Don't know for sure if a regular glove box would fit (I made my own) but, if it is 3 inches deep or less from the back of the dash it should fit fine. Body is on now for final door, trunk and hood fitting before primer and paint so it hard to see much. PM me and we can set up time if you want to have a look.

Like you I also wanted a heater and glovebox. I fabricated a heater forward box to move the heater into the engine compartment a couple of inches and then made a custom glovebox. Both modification cost less than $20, but was a bit of work. Here are links to what I did.

ChopTheBass, ran into the same issue. With heater, no room for glove box.... But still wanted a place for phone and wallet. So... we fabricated a glovebox of sorts that allows entry into the trunk. Just a small door between the two seats, and a fabricated aluminum box (maybe 12x12) between the rollbars in the trunk. It's come in very handy, and is actually useful. I'd considered the small glovebox as mentioned above, as I do like the look of it, but at 3/4" depth, wasn't sure how useful it would be to me.

I read a build log from a true craftsman that had a good heater solution and built a good sized glove box as well. It may be more work than you are looking for but its worth checking out.

Hey, on the parts page it says the FFR Heater is not available. Are they getting more?

I just placed my 50/50 order and the heater was added to list of options. I better check.

Put a glove box below your right elbow. Can make it any size. Or, build it into the panel behind the seats. Both places allow the heater and a much larger space for a box.

I like the look of the dash with the glovebox door, so I may just go with the shallow one, but also put one behind the seats. I think there is a kit available from someone. Maybe **********?

Ian I have the FFR heater and also wanted a glove box. I went a different route and place an Ibox from Dark Waters Custom between the seats recessed into the trunk top level as I had room because I relocated my battery over the rear axle. One way to do it. Nick C

Thanks Nick. Do you have any pics of your install?
