I have a 351W with a scat crankshaft. I tried to use a Ford timing gear set that is supposed to work on 302 or 351. The crankshaft snout diameter on my 302 measures 1.37. The 351 measures 1.38 and the timing gear will not go on the 351.

Anyone else run into this? If so what is the solution?

thanks

I never measured the diameters but I know mine was a very tight fit. It was equally tight on the original Ford crank as the Scat crank.

Hello there...hipe you're doing well

If you use a torch to heat the edge of the hole of the timing gear, it may expand enough for it to slip on.

Worth a shot since it's easy and free

Hey Dan, how are you doing. I was able to get it started with the crank bolt & washer. It seemed to loosen up once it was pushed on a couple of inches. Your idea is a good one. I'll file that away for the next time. How do you like North Carolina? Sue and I are thinking of heading in that direction when we are retired.

You may want to check that it's not an undersize gear (Rollmaster do a few different sizes, not sure about Ford), they are usually an interference fit but .01" seems too much IMHO. Also it might pay to see if anyone has a standard ford crank to measure the diameter for you. I have just used the harmonic balancer bolt with a spacer to get the gear on in the past but they were all Cleveland's (351 and 302's).
