First post to the forum. Contemplating a Mk4 build. Need some help on the suspension. Pretty sure I am going with the IRS. Advantage/disadvantage with the Pion Drive width versus standard. Not sure I even know what the difference is. Plan on using a Coyote and TKO500 if it makes any difference.

Thanks

Chuck,

"Pin Drive Width" axles are 1-1/2 inches shorter per side, so that traditional pin drive wheels can be fitted. It gives a more traditional, deep dish look. If you are a traditionalist and a fan of the deep dish look, pin drive width may be for you.

Pin drive wheels can be used in either of the two widths. Moving the offset towards the outside (longer half-shafts) improves wheel geometry and gives a more modern look.

Here's an example of pin drive width vs non pin drive width. The roadster on the left is running 15" pin drive wheels and the roadster on the right is running 17" standard width lug-bolt wheels (with the pin-drive style spinner cap). The 17" wheels are higher performance, but have a somewhat harsher ride due to the shorter sidewall:

Thanks for the info. Ended up ordering the solid axle today with the 17" wheels.

Sorry if I'm reading this wrong, are you saying that technically NON-pin drive widths will handle better than pin-drive widths?

In general in every book I have read about racecar suspension design, longer control arms are preferred. For any given amount of vertical wheel movement the longer arms have less change in angle which is a good thing. OTOH, if it were possible to have two cars identical in every way except pin drive vs standard width, I doubt that any but very skilled drivers could tell the difference.
