There is no right or wrong on this. If it looks good, it looks good.

That said, I followed others by doing 7.5" wide stripes at the front of the nose widening to 8.25" at the cowl. Stripes on the roof and tail are 8.25". I used a 1" space between stripes.

Good luck with the paint, and post some pics!

Like Dan said, no right or wrong.
I went 7.25 to 7.5 at the cowl, then 7.5 all the way back. I also treated the tail differently.

Went 7/1/7 all the way. I think that was the original dimensions. Didn't want to bust my painters chops by widening the stripes at the cowl. He hates painting stripes and especially meatballs. End result looks OK to me. Anyways I really don't know why the need for widening the stripes, I can't see any benefit other than headaches trying to get them aligned. The meatballs were done by giving a static cling meatball to my painter and he taped around and painted and it came out great. Also used it to tape around the edge of the stripes that abut the meatball. The only way I could get him to paint the front meatball. I had to use the stick ums on the doors though, couldn't get him to paint them. Had a sign company apply those and the numbers, came out looking quite professional.

Pete Brock has some suggestions located here: http://www.bre2.net/index.php?section=77

Mine is painted silver stripes on blue. The main stripes are seven inches separated by 1 3/8th inch of body color. The main stripes are separated by 1/4 inch of body color from 1/4 inch silver stripes. Here is how it was painted for the builder, Bill Shaw. http://b.shaw.home.comcast.net/~b.shaw/Daytona/body/index.htm

You might want to consider a color scheme based on the other finishes (radiator intake grille, nose air exit grille, side pipe color, wheel color, etc.). My side pipes are steel painted flat aluminum and that coordinates with the silver stripes and the grille finishes.
