Hi All,

With our build now truly underway, time to say 'Hi All' and share what we have going on :)

We are a couple of guys from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, that run a High Performance EV parts and conversion shop. So far our focus has been electric powerboats and runabouts, but with the 818 we want to make our debut in road going electric performance.
Though it is our first car, we are not going in uncovered as our partner in the USA, EVTV Motor Verks, is a premier source of information and components for the DIY EV scene. Also, we will be working closely with Hammink Performance -the EU dealer for Factory Five- toward the goal of getting our 818 certified; so we know we have guys with hands-on Factory Five kit building experience at our backs!

Not the first to think all this is a cool idea, as can been seen by the other great electric builds already shown here on the forum..-I also happen to know the guys from EV West that are working on 'Machine 33's' electric 818 -small world :)

Besides wanting to build our own kick-*** car, we will be documenting the build as part of a project to develop a 'drop-in' (term used lightly) electric drive train kit for this great platform. This would include components/certification getting it road-legal here in Netherlands and -as we have more or less the strictest DMV on planet Earth- all through the EU.

Not wanting to get into the whole hassle of taking apart and decommissioning a donor car (the paperwork alone is a real pain if you are not licensed garage) (also keep shop clean :)
->we decided to get a complete crate of parts -minus engine&exhaust shipped along with the 818 kit.
So by far most of the grind work was already done, still everything needs cleaning, polishing and painting to finish up with a showroom ready car.

This will keep us busy for a bit, and then all hands on battle-stations to get to the kart phase so we can start the real EV component fitting game.

Had our top tester and project mascot do a thorough inspection
25097

and then packed away the body panels safe and sound (but not without a good dose of itchy!)
25098

..which brings us to today, where we received a shipment of EV components, including the Siemens motor we will be using in the 818

so quickly mount the frame and make some space...

..and then we get a first chance to line up the bride and groom!

Anne! So glad to see you got your kit! I was just talking to Jack about you guys yesterday. Michael and Matt also send their regards. Can't wait to see your project take wings and fly. Build on my friends! I think the Seimens will be a great drop in option....Something I considered with the AC50 but when the dual AC35 came out I couldn't resist. Did you get the controller code worked out?

Considering price, performance, form factor and, v important, road to road legal certification; we selected the Siemens 1PV5135 4WS14 AC Induction Motor for our 818 e-kit.

First day, quick and dirty measurement suggest she will fit like a glove: 70 mm to work with where we think we'll need about 58 mm (2.25") for the adapter plate...

Erik! Thanks man, having a blast already :)
Heard about you and your build last August and have been following your project real close ever since. It has helped me while waiting to get my hands on ours for sure...also inspirational build quality!

In the vid above you can see I was actually planning on the AC35x2 at first, and still think she is a super fit for the car in performance specs and the great tweaking/programming that can be done with the curtis. Cant wait to see you rolling and burning rubber.
The CANbus EV VCU unit (called GEVCU ~Generic Electric VCU) is indeed ready for action so we should start seeing more of these motors in projects around the States and EU.
-> three year ago you could hardly get 100+ kW AC induction at all, and then only at ridiculous prices... now there are 2 under $10K options and lots of new toys on the horizon

So lead on!

Final startup post..

Last August the New Electric team was in Cape Girardeau, Missouri for the annual EVCCON (EV conversion Convention) event. Besides checking out all the great EVs people have built, there were many sessions on all aspects of building or converting EVs. Particularly interesting was the 'Build your dream EV' presentation by Erik Kriss of KrissMotors (.com). Erik has a real knack for planning and documenting his work and takes us through every step of the process using the 818 kit as example.
I captured the whole thing on tape and have made it available on our youtubes.. Good info for ANYone doing or considering building an 818, even more so if you are planning electric:

Hi and welcome New Electric
Your motor looks familiar.

If you have any EV questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks guys!

Bob: super interested to see what the eGear vs mating to stock transmission like we are doing is going to be like.. is it the 8.28 ratio? I think your controller has more oomph, so this is almost apples to oranges ;)

quick little vid of the parts prep and fooling around.. getting a feel for her you might say:

Hi
My BorgWarner Transaxle is the 8.28:1 which will give me 95mph and 115 if I push the rated RPM on the motor. This set up should be capable of 1G+ acceleration from 0 to 50. Great for autocross.

For higher speeds (track days at mid-ohio) I could go to the 6.54:1 gear set in the same box.

Your set up give you the best performance in 1st,2nd, or 3rd. I don't think you will use 4th or 5th.
Are you going with a Siemens or Solectria DMOC controller?

My decision to go single speed was based on weight, complexity, and performance.
I have to do custom axles, you have to do an adaptor plate.

The Tesla roster and Model S are both single speed. (I like those cars)

Assuming no traction problem, I guess?

We've been running around so much, but here's a little update:

So last week we were pumped-up and ready to make the front look a little more car-ish and it turns out we were missing a couple of snap-rings needed for the job..
Same snaps you need in the back so quicly grabbed those to keep the flow going..then called Hammink to put 'em on order.. They said " No no, we will send you ours from our own kit, and order the replacements ourselves"

That my friends is service with a big S (for: Smile :D)

Thanks guys!

So this is where we left off last week

Hey Anne,

I'm following your build thread with great interest. We met at the first EVCCON a few years ago. Cudos on your growth in the EV world over the last few years. I always enjoy you videos. I'm planning an electric build of this same car also, likely to start in this summer. Of course I'm checking out all the builds. I see Erik Hansen and EV West are building an 818e with pretty much the same scheme as what Eric Kriss did his talk on (has Eric started one yet?) . I just reviewed Bob_n_Cincy's build the other day. You guys are getting me all fired up! I've been considering all the options done so far and like several things about each one of them. I'm not smart enough to do my own AC motor controller like Bob though.... . but I did consider that the Siemens 1PV5135 could do a fair bit more than 100 kw for brief periods (peak) and considered pairing it with a different controller. At the end of the day, I decided to go a different route than what's been done so far. . . . bit early to discuss coz it's still growing in my little brain.
