View Full Version : 818 Fuel tank on back order 1-2 months :(

Can any 818 owner with a stock fuel tank help me out? I have FFR 818 chassis 75. She's a Roller, however, I really can't move forward with wiring until I install a fuel tank, which FFR is telling me 1-2 months. Can you help measure a "stock" or even "modified" for taller drivers like myself, fuel tank, I would like to make my own (I own a metal fab shop)...but without just some general dimensions and design cues (baffles and fuel pump and pick locations)...I would be guessing. LOL. I also have a stock tank which I don't plan on using, BUT my thought for you is if you own a fab shop, why limit yourself to the dimensions of the stock tank? Make one in the shape/size you want!

I'm really not trying to make any money off of it; unlike donor parts, there's not not much of a market for it (every kit gets one and a lot don't use it). I got the Boyd tank after I received my kit, so I'd be happy to take shipping and a nominal amount. PM me if you want it.

My tank, still in the box, was taking up space in my garage and I knew I couldn't sell it so I shipped it back to Factory Five with a note that said, "Merry Christmas, put it back on the shelf." I got a very nice FFR Tee shirt and a thank you. Now, I think it was a good deal!

How does it work if you say I don't want a tank, or say, the flexible SS cooling lines or the shifter? Since I haven't finalized my package, and have months to wait I am considering my options. Do they knock off anything for stuff you don't want? A cafeteria ordering plan?

I asked this question before I paid for mine. They weren't willing to discount the price at all to leave off the fuel tank. I didn't push it very hard, but given I am still waiting for the fuel tank, perhaps I should have.

When I ordered my Coupe kit, FFR was willing to delete any of the items I didn't need, but not discount them from the total cost, except for the seats. According to the tech I spoke to a few weeks ago, whom no longer works there, it is company policy.

On the positive side, FFR told me they redesigned the tank for a little more driver's side space. They are waiting for both the standard hot rod tank (off the '33 maybe), and the newly designed tank. Back orders will get whatever comes in first, no choice I was told until they catch up. Mine is back ordered too. Bob, if I get hung up with the back order, I might be interested. Heck, it might just be a good reason to swing by and checkout your build. Assuming you still have a tank to sell.

The reason why is that these are the same tanks they used in the 33 Hot Rod! The original ones had the fill on the top of the mid-tank and when the majority of owners reported issues with filling them, they redesigned it with the opening on the back. :p

My Boyd tank showed up just yesterday, but I'm on crutches right now with a bad ankle sprain. I'll likely need a few days to get to it. Not getting out there to check it out is killing me! But in the meantime, their product page might have what you're looking for, dimensions are listed.

Thanks I missed that, so the placement of the pickup and sender should not matter, but would like to know the height of the fuel inlet and the placement of the mounting tabs (top and bottom). I was also going to make my tank a like 36x6.5x9 (a little narrower and not as long as I will need to fit my fire bottle someplace and the space where the fuel cell sits looks to be fine and the fire lines don't have to be that long. So when you can hobble out there :-) it would be appreciated .

I think we all heard they were redesigning the tank to add more legroom.
Then we heard the everybody's tank was back ordered.
We all put 2 and 2 together and ASSUMED they were related. We were wrong.
When the extra leg room new tank does show up, it will also have to include a change in design of the fire wall.

For me, it wasn't an assumption. I received my 818 in December and called Factory Five regularly after that to get back ordered parts. When I spoke to them in February, they gave me a choice between having them ship me the hot rod tank right away or waiting to receive the redesigned tank. They outright told me the redesigned tank would provide additional legroom. With that information, I opted to wait and after an additional three month wait, I received the hot rod tank. When I received the tank on 6 May, it gave me none of what they told me I would get if I waited.

Welcome Rob, (I hope I got that correct)
First thing I suggest id to sit in on of the cars the with a thin race style seat. Then decide if you can fit or not. Find a builder near you and stop by for a visit. We all like showing off our stuff.
Myself and a few other builders are going to put the tank in the box where the battery would normally go.

I spoke to the guys at Factory Five today and they told me I could still get the new tank instead of the hot rod tank, but they cannot give a delivery estimate for the new tank as it isn't in production yet. They said they are still doing some design on the tank to allow it to accept the stock fuel pump and fuel gauge sensor from the donor.

This is really disappointing news, FFR has neglected the fuel system and continues to do so. I'm not sure that the best move was to design a fuel tank for the existing aging sender and pump, these are not real expensive items but I understand that FFR wants to use as much of the donor as possible. The sender I will say designing a fuel tank around a float ased sender is not the smartest move, as these are subject to slosh readings and subject to age.

Does anyone have a picture of the tank setting in the Frame? Also how much gas does it hold?

I received the new tank yesterday and contacted FFR about how it mounts. They said there's a new firewall that's designed to hold it in place... don't know when I get that part. I'll post up a pic of it in the car when I get home.

Here's the new tank in the frame. It gives me 4.5 inches of movement with my sliders. The rearward movement is limited by the top of the seat hitting the frame... you could get another inch or two of leg space if you tilted the seat a bit forward.
I also heard back from FFR that they're shipping the new firewall panels at the beginning of next week.

Looks like they might be using a Subaru fuel pump mounting assembly.
The flange on the new tank matches the Subaru flange.

That is correct. I have their style fuel pump assy still. If anyone needs it let me know. I will be using the stock assembly I believe with a walboro 255 or more.

I got the updated tank and firewall last week. Accompanying them was manual revision 1N, which covers the changes. They don't specifically address securing the tank, which leads me to believe the firewall is designed to do it. But it just doesn't seem like enough. You can see the gap above the tank. Any thoughts?

I'm not home right now but doesn't the middle piece that fits perpendicular to the two firewall pieces (not shown in your pics) sit down against the tank?

You're right, it does sit there but it's at the same height as the ledge created by the 2 firewall pieces. It doesn't put any downward pressure on the tank itself. I'm sure the wedge shape of the tank and firewall will prevent it from moving but I want to make certain. The manual revision seems like it's missing a few steps.

This new tank and sheet metal is a big improvement.
Summit has a large assortment of straps available if FFR doesn't have them.

Yeah Suttonb3 I just checked mine and that piece doesn't put any downward pressure. It's just the wedge shape to hold it down. I'll probably drill the mounts for the firewall pieces and see how much movement the tank has before making the call if it needs more reinforcement.
I do like the new firewall, it gives you a nice small storage space behind the seats. Only drawback is that it cuts into passenger seat space. I'm going to have to move my pass seat about 1.5" forward... maybe more if I lower the seat.

I'll mount the firewall and report my findings. I bet we discover that it secures the tank well. I'm going to use rivnuts instead of rivets to make maintenance easier in the future.
