No way? The oldest city in NA is not from USA? Oh Trump will be SO pissed off once I tell him that!! I'm tweeting him right now.
And St Johns is the furthest East of any part of North America.

I think Adam connected me with john from http://www.volksconversions.com.au/ for the adapter.
Adam heres a pic of my 13b rew build. Hopefully gets you posting your progress again.

Thanks. I'll contact him. Did he custom build the plate, or just tell you which one that he sells to purchase?

He makes those plates himself. In my case the bolt pattern on my plate fits a few other subaru transmissions (If I remember correctly).
But I think he can custom make one to fit your needs.

Yes, I got mine from VOLKS in Australia. The quality was meh, but the fit was perfect. Sorry for the delayed response.

Wow, you’re build looks soo clean! Can’t wait to see more. How close are you to having it running?
I’ve literally been working since I filmed the first drive video, with only enough time in between for family and maybe 3hrs working on the car. Got three weeks off over Christmas, and some goodies ordered, so hopefully I’ll make some progress.

All I need is to connect the water and oil lines and figure out the starter (have one on order hopefully its the right one). Got the exhaust all welded up just no pic of it yet.
Then its off to the tuner.

I’m very curious about your whole setup, care to share all the details? PM me if you’d rather. Unless I missed your build thread.

Thanks Frank, fingers crossed. Sorry I haven’t been active on your thread, I’m long overdue for a Frank818 read. I did notice that you made the calendar, congrats! You definitely earned it!
To be honest, it’s a bit depressing seeing everyone else making progress when I can’t, so I’ve been avoiding the forums. But knowing that I will be able to soon has gotten me excited enough to start lurking around.

Been making some progress over the holidays. I’ve also been doing some filming in the process so in the next couple of weeks I hope to have some update videos. But today was a very special day, I had an inspector come by and my 818 is officially a car! I got my VIN number on the car! The inspector was nice enough to get a vin with the same last few numbers as the chassis serial number so they match. Very exciting! Still got lots to do before I get my safety inspection in the spring, but I have no doubt my “2018 Factory Five Racing 818S” will be hitting the streets soon!
Wonder if I’m the only car of the first 100 not finished...

Congrats Adam, and thanks for the rotary build thread. I'm a big rotary engine fan, and it's the first thing I thought about when I saw the car. I even asked FF about rotary engine builds, but they weren't aware of any, so you must be under the radar :-)
Cheers,

Wow that was easy!! Nice thing done and it's always special when you get something particular to remind you of the build.
In my case it's my chassis number for which the numbers are the opposite of the 818 (#181). But it's a longer shot than you for your VIN. :)
Wonder if I’m the only car of the first 100 not finished...
You're not. Craig from IN is unfortunately stalling on his. He's got a couple of Formula cars working on but still... stalling on his. :( Very early chassis, way before yours.
Can't wait to see vids of the car driving for real!

Or start a side business at the same time you decide to have two kids while trying to build a car.
I'll get back to it soon. It's cold now. I can't kneel yet, but I can bend my knee all the way now without pain. When I go outside and it's cold it makes it hurt.

I’m in the exact same situation. Wife started a business that I put a lot of work into and went from 0-2 kids. But I think this year will be the one where the car actually leaves the garage for the first time in 4 year.

Life can definitely reprioritize for you quick, I also started a business and had a second kid since starting this build. Been -40 here for awhile, I’m not looking forward to my natural gas bill but I’ve been in the garage with a t-shirt. Heating the garage is a must this far north.
Happy New Year everyone!
Can anyone tell what type of bulb it is that FFR supplies for the reverse/turn signal? There’s no writing on the bulb, the two little knobs are like an 1156 but it has two contacts like a 1157. I’m not sure about south of the border, but up here our rear turn signals are red, so I have to order a white/red led bulb.

Canadian,
You can do what I did with the tail lights. I used a trailer adaptor that changed the independent turn signals to combined turn/stop traditional signals.

With only two filaments in the bulb, what happens when you have both stop and turn on? I’m guessing the one side would continue to flash and your other would indicate you’re braking. In my case I don’t have a third brake light, so if I had my hazards on there would be no indication that I’m braking. I kind of like how FFR included a dual colour bulb, I didn’t even know they were a thing, but someone should tell them to send red/white up here instead of amber/white. Thanks for the idea though, if I had a third brake light it’d be a good option.

On a 1157 there are 2 filiments.
running light (8.3 watt)
turn, brake, emergency, (26.8 watts)
When braking and turning. The turn side flashes while the non turn side stays on bright.
I didn't know Canada requires red turn signals.
Here is a white/amber bulb. http://www.highperformancebulbs.com/1157-3157-7443-led-switchbacks-turn-signal-led-bulbs.html

I started second guessing the red rear turn signals, so I looked it up and I guess they can be amber or red. Pretty sure most modern cars/trucks use red, but I guess it goes both ways. I’m still going to look for a replacement that’s clear/red, as soon as I can figure out what type of bulb it is. It’s not a 1157, the alignment prongs are symmetrical so you can put it in wrong and the colours are switched.

Awesome, thanks! I started fitting my dash last night and realized the top of the steering wheel blocks my view of the cluster too much. I test fitted the Subaru one and it allows me to mount the cluster higher, but the fit of the dash was off. Figured rather than start from scratch fitting it I’d see how others had done it. Thanks again!

As I mentioned before, I did some filming over Christmas. I’ve had so many issues getting them edited, I almost gave up. My first videos I filmed with my GoPro so I just used GoPro Studio, but for whatever reason I decided to do my recent stuff with my iPhone. GoPro studio doesn’t like .mov files, and since I was going to pick up a Sony A6000 after Christmas I figured I’d try out some more universal editing software. After trying a few my computer caught a virus and after a couple of days deleting stuff in “safe mode” I gave up, converted all my videos to .mp4 and made the below video with GoPro Studio. Now of course it’s no longer offered or supported by GoPro and is having crashing issues. I think I’ve found a good one now, so hopefully the other videos will be up shortly.
Now I know at least one of you will read the above rant and think “why don’t spend more time working on the car instead of playing with videos”. Well most all that “wasted” time was in hotel rooms while working out of town, so I couldn’t work on the car if I tried. I’d also like to make some well edited videos of the car on the road and on track in the near future, and these update videos help me learn what I need to. Hopefully someone enjoys them.
Ok, on to the video...

I enjoy your videos, personally I get a little bit self conscious with someone watching me work on the car. Let alone have the whole world watch lol .
I do like what you did to the rear end. My plan is to do something similar, with the license plate higher between the taillights.
Look forward to the next video

Thanks, and I wish the whole world was watching cause then I could quit my day job, lol. I’m also counting on those who watch it to point out anything I’m doing wrong. I suppose I should be pointing out all the stupid things I’m doing wrong so others can learn from my mistakes, but it’s a little harder to put myself out there that way.
I look forward to see how you do your rear bumper, this seems to be the part that varies mostly between builders.

You know, I'm not really big into videos more than 5 minutes long...not gonna lie. But after skipping around a little I started it over, put this thing in a side window and listened/watched the rest of the whole damned thing. Sorry about the truck (I hate people sometimes) and I LOVE that wing mount. Not that I'm going to use a wing, but dammit...simple, elegant.

Thanks! I feel the same way, I usually watch similar videos in the garage while I work on the car. In fact during each of those time lapses I was watching something. My “time lapses” are actually just video played faster, so before speeding them up I could hear the show in the background.

I knew about using the old shifter boot for the ebrake, but IMO it fits about as well as I do in my wife’s high heels, lol. I can’t seem to find a supplied boot anywhere, but after 4 years of building I’m not surprised. But now that you’ve confirmed my suspicions I’m off to look some more. Thanks for the video, the idea of opening the space for the oil to flow from the back of the case to the front from my laymans view should solve some issues. I hope some more exprienced Subaru people will chime in. It doesn't appear to do any harm other than weaken the case at that point. But if the gains of better oil flow outweigh the slight amount of strength to the case that is lost, ( which it in my view does ) then I think I'll be opening up the case on my trans in a similar way.
Thanks again for the post and video.

Thanks! I have been through that thread, which is why I bought the phase 1 transmission when I came across it. It’s also where I got the info about switching housings and the oiling issues. However that thread made a lot more sense to me after taking things apart. There’s a picture or two in there about it, but I guess I needed to see it in 3D. Also, I couldn’t find any info on switching phase 1 and 2 parts anywhere else so I was still a bit skeptical.
Part of me thinks I should’ve just gone 6mt, but I’m hoping the rotary’s lack of torque will save me. But with a LSD and 305 sticky tires I don’t expect my axles, bearings, or cv’s to last long. Probably upgrade to sti spindles/hubs and DSS axles before to long.

Thanks! It all made sense in my head as well, and I too hope others chime in on whether or not it was a good idea. I’m not too worried about weakening that part of the case, there’s nothing going on back there anymore. Still though I’m considering ordering some Moore Performance blast plates. Their new version looks pretty cool and wouldn’t be hidden on the 818.

The CD-7 is strictly a Can-bus unit, no analog inputs. I’m not sure if it would be possible with a oem ecu, but it’s being used with most aftermarket ecu’s. It’s quite possible that’s there’s a work around to input analog channels to another device that then uses canbus to connect to the CD-7, or use a more modern Subaru ecu that has canbus, but that’s all way over my head. I’m using an AEM Infinity ecu and the universal harness had canbus plugs already wired in, so for me it was plug n play.

No e85 I wish. We are trying to hit 400-450 on pump gas and low boost 10-12lbs. After I figure out what im going to do with the transmission, then we can turn her up with some good fuel. I will be limited by my injectors and pumps though. Thinking we can hit 600hp.
Here a video of our crew taking the win at IFO 2018 in Lebanon NY.
We were having a couple of issues with the car shutting off during burnout, also come to find out Turbo was completely trashed. Still ran PB of 7.50

Wow that’s quick! It’s a good thing that rotaries make less torque than piston engines, at 400hp I’d expect you to be around 3-350ft/lbs which will help with keeping trannies. My initial goal is 350 on low boost. I’m hopeful that my RA 5mt will hold up, but with 305 stickies my axles will probably break before the tires spin.

That’s a neat video Frank, thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas!
No updates for awhile, the car is ready to drive/troubleshoot/tune but unfortunately I only had a few days off since filming the last video and didn’t get a chance to work on it. I did pick up some ID1050x and ID2000 injectors along with some Full Function Engineering fuel rails. Still need to decide on a surge tank, FPR, and in-line filter. Also want to mount the wing before spring. I’m going to focus on my other car/bike projects over the winter and really get back into the 818 when the weather warms up in the spring.

ID1050x! Yeah, nice I got those last year too, I mean 1 year ago. Of course still need to try them but apparently they kick behinds!
You got what, 1 injector per rotor?
Why would you use ID2000s? On top of the ID1050x as a double-injector setup?
Speaking of rotary, no time to waste, man, you have to upgrade for the latest rotary technology (2006 :))!

Each rotor has 2 injectors, a primary(id1050x) and a secondary(id2000). The secondary comes on once the primary hits a preset duty cycle. So each rotor will have 3050cc of fuel.
No hydrogen here, but I may add methanol or switch to ethanol at some point.
I have a 78 Honda cb750 that I started chopping before I got the 818 that I want to finish. It’s been welded to my bench for about 5 years and is probably in a lot of pictures and videos. I also have 02 road star warrior 1700 that needs some maintenance and a 93 gsxr with a blown motor that I’d like to convert to electric. Suffice it to say I have a few projects.
Happy New Year my friend!

He’s got some interesting theories, and no doubt he’d be right about some of that if Mazda cane out with another rotary powered car. I don’t see that happening, but who knows, maybe a limited production one day. The last time they redesigned it for fuel efficiency and emissions it didn’t work out so well. I’m not worried about either though.
I always have lots of projects on the go, I just love tinkering in the garage. When I’m busy at work I buy lots of parts, and when it’s slow I install them. Nature of the oil and gas industry, it’s go go go or full stop usually.

It’s springtime!!! Finally back at the car, got idle tuned pretty good, cooling system working properly, all ready to take it for a little drive and I can’t find reverse. I think I might only have 1st and 2nd or maybe it’s 3rd and 4th. Either way my shift rod doesn’t seem to want to turn, but goes in and out smoothly. Can anyone tell me how much it’s supposed to twist?

Seems I have 1-4 but no 5-R. I believe it’s the Reverse Check Sleeve as without the t-case housing on I can engage both 5th and reverse.
Oh and for those that remember my last compression test being bleak, and improving a little after soaking in oil, it’s gotten even better now that it’s been through a few heat cycles. Front 106/94/100psi and rear 96/101/91psi. I am premixing a little heavy to aid in freeing everything up. Also checked my coolant for exhaust gasses and there were no signs, so o-rings seem ok so far.

So I did manage to repair my Reverse Check Sleeve and found both 5th and Reverse. Took the car for a few spins and my small axle seal leak became a big one. Both seals are new and 99% sure on properly and the right sides. However I did notice that the axles were free to move in and out of the transmission and didn’t snap in place. I pulled the axle to see if the cir clip was still on and it was.
Now for those not following along with my never ending build, last year I swapped my ‘07 Impreza transmission for a 99 STI 5mt. I thought it was odd that a 99 5mt would have male axles and female transmission input like the ‘07’s but the axles I’d assembled previously fit right in. The transmission luckily did come with front axles but I didn’t give them much of a look. Fortunately I’m a pack rat and put them in the garage attic.
106540106541
Well now I know why my seals were leaking and the axles didn’t lock in place. The male stub that sticks out in pre ‘04 transmissions was still on the axles that came with the transmission making the transmission appear to be female. I disassembled both axles to see if I could just swap CV’s but the splines don’t match up on the two different cv’s.
So my question is this. Are the axles FFR sells two different lengths or different splines? I know aftermarket axles can be different splines so could these axles work if I found female CV’s that used the same splines? Or is my only option to get some axles from FFR?

I'm guessing you wanted the 99 sti 5mt for the RA gears? Would those swap into a newer case (like 02-03)? That might be a cheaper option if custom axles need to be made.

Mostly it was the factory limited slip that I wanted, the RA gears were a bonus. I got the transmission for cheaper than a limited slip so I thought it was a no brainer, but it’s been one headache after another.
Just talked to FFR and they just have the 2 different sizes, the ones in Art’s link above. The transmissions all have the same spline (25 I believe) so it’s just my inner CV’s that are the problem as they’re 22 spline. I’m going to try and source some ‘02 wrx axles and I expect they’ll work. Assuming they’re oem and not aftermarket.

Well I picked up a rebuilt ‘02 wrx front axle from Napa today after FFR confirmed that they only have the 29-29spline and 29-21 spine axles and they’re all the same length. I figured if the NAPA one had 29 or 21 spline then I could make it work. Well luckily enough it was 29 spline and worked on the axles I have! Already have one side back together. Unfortunately yesterday when I’d given up all hope I push the 818 against the wall and brought my rx8 in the garage for some much needed maintenance and upgrades and now I can’t access the other side of the 818, lol. First world problems...

Been making progress, slow and steady. I decided since I didn't widen the rear bumper I should try to make my life as difficult as possible and try to use different taillights. Someone put FRS taillights on a GTM flipped upside down and switched sides. I liked the look, and thought it would suit the 818 body lines even better. Eventually I'll buy some smoked LED lights, but I picked up these oem ones for $100 locally for now.
To aid in locating them and minimize the effort in cutting out the bumper I made a mold of the light.

Then painted it black and taped it on.

And here's some sketches I did planning the bumper cutouts. The top one is what I'm leaning towards, however I'm going to change up the slots a bit.
http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k519/pope83/42133A6E-969B-4C14-8C50-D732CFD5F206.jpg (http://s1113.photobucket.com/user/pope83/media/42133A6E-969B-4C14-8C50-D732CFD5F206.jpg.html)

What "upgrades"? :)
The RX8 was bought to try my hand at drifting and be a backup track car in case I’d booked a track day and the weather turned out to be poor. So I installed some stiffer diff bushings, welded the diff, coilovers all around and a header back exhaust. Also picked up some new wheels and sticky tires. This all took much longer than I’d expected! Finally got the car out of the garage late July and got an alignment. Car is fun, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it to any drift practices due to work.

Way too long without an update, Mr Zonda.
Sorry Frank, it has been way too long!
Were you able to track down another axle that worked?
Once I got the RX8 out of the garage I went back to Napa and got another one, installed it and dumped in about 3 litres of oil before realizing it was just pouring out the bottom just as fast. When I’d swapped transmissions I took the new seals I’d put in the ‘’07 trans out and put them into the ‘99 one, which is why it only leaked a little when I had the ‘07 axles installed. So I had to take everything apart again, get the proper seals and put it all back together. Fortunately this time it all went well.
So after I got my axles/seals sorted, I drove it up and down my street a bunch playing with the ecu to get the tune close enough for a drive to inspection. Since then I’ve been extremely busy with work, combined with planning and going on a trip to Europe, where I got to see 2 F1 races, there just hasn’t been time.
Anyone F1 fans know where these are?

I didn’t. I still don’t like the rear, but decided the FRS lights just weren’t going to work nicely with the FFR bumper. Plan is to eventually completely redo the rear bumper and do an elaborate rear diffuser, at which point I’ll consider the FRS lights or something completely different.

3rd high mount brake light (still pretty sure this isn’t a legal requirement), my battery tie down was a thick rubber strap like on a motorcycle (has to be metal). Window defrost, I had a little 12v thing that sticks on your dash that others have passed with, but this guy needs vents all along the windshield not just one spot. Need a brake fail light showing either low fluid or low pressure. Since I’m using a remote reservoir I can’t do fluid level so I’m installing a brake differential switch. And when I installed my bump steer kit I forgot add a second jam nut on the outside by the spherical joint.
Everything is done but the brake switch, which I should have done today.

God damn, Adam, and I thought QC was picky! Maybe we have an overall tougher inspection but you got more picky details.
Also very surprised you need a full defrost on an open top, totally useless. Now I reckon the snow 1-2 weeks ago but that is not a reason for a defrost! I'm surprised you already fixed that one which seems to by far the most difficult to implement.
True you did some super major implementations on the car already so a defrost is not going to slow you down. loll

Finally!
What a day! So I had all the items that caused me to fail addressed, appointment booked, left early just to be sure. Last “nice” day, probably for the year based on the forecast. At some point during the 20min drive I blew a -10 oil line. I didn’t notice it until I was pulling into the shop and seen that oil pressure was around 1bar. I was logging, but for some reason the file won’t work, so no idea how low the pressure got or for how long. So here I am, parked outside the shop, oil EVERYWHERE! With all the lines and coolers this thing takes around 10 Litres, dipstick was dry.
I used the push lock style lines, which I’d since learned that they’re not good for oil (despite being rated for it), especially on a rotary which runs really high oil pressure. Since I’d need to remove the entire body to replace the lines, I decided to just add some hose clamps to get me through the inspection process and do the lines over the winter. Well one of the lines on the driver’s front oil cooler let go and spewed everywhere, even came in the footwell!
Standing outside with the mechanic looking at all this mess it starts raining. So we push it into the shop and start talking about how I can get it home. I decide to hack up the cooler line that burst, disconnect both coolers and just install a loop on the thermostat to bypass them all together. He grabs me some tools and says “I’ll get started on the paperwork”. Wait, what? I’d totally ruled out passing an inspection and was just focused on damage control. So I installed my new line, added 3.5 Litres of oil and fired it up, good pressure. I cleaned up what oil I could and paid for my inspection. He was happy with all the fixes I added since the first inspection, and knew I’d fix the lines properly based off the rest of the build.
I was a mess on the drive home, such a mix of emotions. I’d just passed my inspection, but did I toast the engine? Rotaries rely on oil for 50% of their cooling, am I going to make it home without overheating the oil? Will another line or my new one fail? I was glued to my dash, pressure was staying good but the oil temp was climbing. I told myself if it hits 100c I’d pull over and see if it goes down idling or maybe shut it off for awhile, but it was getting really windy and bad weather was approaching fast! Just about home and getting off the highway I hit 100c, but it starting dropping as I slowed down for my exit and made it home! Holy sh!t that was stressful!
So it’s very bitter sweet. I’ve driven it over a 100km between the two inspections, but with winter setting in this evening and the need for new lines, I don’t think I’ll get to drive it with the plate on this year. Big plans over the winter, tearing the car down quite a bit to wrap it and install a bunch of upgrades. My motivation is high though, so I’m excited to get her looking and performing her best for the spring!

Merry Christmas to you too bud! Love the Zonda, in fact the Zonda R is my poster dream car, just savage!
Haven’t worked on the car for a couple months. I told my wife that once I got my plate I’d finally do some renovations that I’d been putting off for years. All done those, and LOTS of parts lined up for 818!
First to show up is my Radium FCST (Fuel Cell Surge Tank) which I’m really excited about!! Two pumps in the surge tank and then the lift pump. I’ll only need the one pump for gasoline, but if I decide to push the limits and run e85 I’m all set. Also nice to know that there’s a spare pump just sitting there.
119430
I’m going to build a new tank out of aluminum, and I’m thinking of putting the pump assembly to the passenger side and making a access panel behind the seat so I only need to remove the one seat to access everything. The pickup would still be fairly close to the centre, and even with the surge tank I’ll install some sort of baffling. Also need to add a vent line to the filler as my first fill at the pump resulted in gas puking everywhere.
I’m not sure what I’m doing with the engine yet. I’ll do a compression test, cut open the oil filter and inspect the oil for any bearing material. I’ve got a lot to do, so ideally I’d prefer to postpone a rebuild until next winter.

So excited to get this installed! Unbelievably short crisp shifts and fully adjustable. It’s the K-Tuned Rev2 Street billet shifter. Found some cables locally for $60cad! They’re not perfect as the bulkhead threads to cable end is longer, but for the price and availability I couldn’t pass them up and I’ll make them work. Cables are 84”, which is about 6” longer than I needed but my routing now incorporates a sweeping “S” that shouldn’t affect the feel of the shifting much.
125561
The side to side motion needed to be reversed which I was able to accomplish by rotating the pivot arm mounting and making a new bulkhead mount. Once I have the Blast Plates from Moore(group buy on hold due to Covid-19) I’ll remake both bulkhead mounts so I didn’t get fancy with the temporary one.

The Quick Latches are a pain in the beeep cuz you're not using springs. I have 20lbs springs on every quick latch and it works superb, it pushes the panel up every time I press on the latch.
Curiously I cannot find the springs anymore on their website... :(

Thanks frank but I’ve moved on from them. I have 6, so I’m sure I’ll try them again on another project someday and look for springs then.

Just an FYI. The GTC-300 is a twisted element wing. The basic rationale for this style of wing is that its designed to work with a fastback style rear window (think Ferrari, the 818C, etc.) by optimizing it's angle of attack (AOA) across the wing's span. Airflow along the sides of the car is more or less level with the road. However the airflow coming over the roof and down the sloping rear glass approaches at a steeper angle. So in this application the wing "sees" the air coming at it from different angles, thus making for different AOA across the span. Solution: twist the element to accommodate for that condition. Setting the tips at 0AOA is likely to produce the same AOA in the middle when the air is flowing down the rear glass (now flowing "straight on" towards the upturned middle section).
Without a fastback profile, I would focus on the middle AOA. That has the greatest span, so this will contribute more to the wing's performance. Yes, that means the tips will be at a heavy AOA, but that's just life with a twisted element wing. Test - test - test.

Thanks for the advice man!
The plan is to add some form of roof in the near future. This was the wing FFR offered with the 818R back when the car first came out. Obviously it was the wrong wing for that car, especially with no windshield. They did do testing with it and if I recall correctly they recommended the centre of the element be set to 0* which makes the sides 15*. That was with the race splitter and diffuser which I also have. So that’s where I’m going to start. Once I’m able to get on track I’ll play with increasing the angle after I’ve gotten aquatinted with the car and track. Lots of testing in my future!

I can provide more pix on my thread if you need, but since I could not find the springs on Quik-Latch's website, I searched and found them elsewhere: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Quik-Latch-QL-25-ASX-20-lbs-Heavy-Duty-Assist-Spring-Kit,139590.html
Maybe either get them from elsewhere or ask Quik-Latch if they still source those...
Never failed on me, once you adjust the latches properly, angle, height, those springs work like a charm. And god knows how many times I pushed on my latches to remove my deck lids and open up my hood. :)

What matters is that the panels must be well fixed in place so they don't move when you pull/apply the wrap. In some areas you need precision and force, you don't want say the hood to flex or have the tendency to close on you.
It is DIY, I've done it and some others too. Took me about 150h the whole car (on an S, I've got no top). DIY will not be as perfect as from a pro, unless you are a pro already, but people won't notice the defects, they are way too much overwhelmed by the overall of the car.
What I don't like with wrap is a chip, say from a small rock on the hood on highway, is unfixable without leaving a trace unless you re-wrap the entire panel.

What are your thoughts on the wrap process and results? DIY? Panels on or off?
Definitely DIY, and I’ve got lots to learn. The trick, which mostly comes from experience (which I don’t have), is knowing when and where to use a seam. Just because you can physically stretch the material and get it wrapped in one piece doesn’t mean you should. I used some scrap to test out how best to do the tricky sections. I couldn’t do the side sail in one piece, so rather than have a blue on blue seam I opted for the black to match the intercooler. The other sides vent doesn’t have the intercooler and is like 6” deep so that would’ve had to been multiple pieces anyway. Plan to use the black on the Front bumper, hood and engine cover vent areas also. Now that I’ve kinda figured out how to do it I should make faster progress. I will make a video about what I learned and how I did each panel, but it won’t really be a “how to” as this is my first time.
The door I did on the car with no side sail, but the side sail was on and off a couple times. You really need to pull hard sometimes and need it mounted, but some parts are easier and more ergonomic to work off the car.

Yeah I didn’t know about the springs until too late, they should probably come with them but they’re already overpriced.
I was pretty set on a dark grey for a long time until I seen your car and started considering blue. I love the matte dark blue(purple?)/black on the red bull F1 cars and decided it was the way to go. This fuel tank and fuel system upgrade was a far larger job then I anticipated. Just another reason to do things right the first time.
No Frank I’m not done and smoking vettes just yet, however I’m getting close. I’ve been enjoying my summer, lots of time with the wife a kids, motorcycle rides, etc. I’ve also been enjoying the RX8, trying my hand at drifting and even did a legit track day with it with an instructor! Felt so at home on track, and the Rx8 was a great platform to get used to the track since it handles so well and has very little power. The 140 treadwear tires also have me lots of confidence, except when the track got wet and my welded diff insisted on making the rear step out on a fast left at the end of a strait! Somehow I managed to get the rear back in line just in time to brake and nailed the next right apex, maybe I’m learning something trying to drift on the skid pad. So while I’ve made great progress on the 818, I’m trying to avoid spending my entire summer in the garage.

You're right, I'm just up to 3krpm. Maybe it sucks fuel from the rail and since there's enough cuz I'm way under vacuum, it doesn't starve. At least I know in "respectable" road driving conditions I have no starvation.
I'll have to test how far I can push the car until it starves, but that will be after dyno tuning next Spring.

I was 1/2 way thru the video and starting to type a reply about not trying to suck oil thru the filter first when your video made the switch. I really don't think you need either of the two filters, or at most a coarse filter. The 250 micron screen is more than adequate but I would put it on the output side of the pump. As I recall those 250 micron cone filters are designed to have the flow thru the large end to the tip of the cone. If the flow is reversed, flowing tip to large end they can collapse.
But if it works pushing it thru an engine oil filter I guess why not!
Have you followed my series of posts in my build thread and in the R forum on my journey thru the 5 speed cooling issue? Have you addressed the tilt issue?

Yeah the filter location was just more proof I like to learn the hard way, lol. The cone filter is installed before the pump and oil flows into the big end, like pouring oil into a funnel.
I just went back through your thread (there’s A LOT of Subaru dry sump talk in there, haha) and found your transmission whoa’s. Interesting that with the cooler dumping onto 5th gear you were still overheating. I also learned I need to keep up with everyone’s build threads as there’s so much good information buried in them.
My transmission sits on the X frame, actually had to grind off a little tab to get it that low. And I’m pretty sure my engine sits level, but now I’m curious what angle it is at exactly.

While I wait for my engine parts to be machined I got bored and decided to port my turbo’s turbine housing before I send it and my manifold out for ceramic coating. My engine will be ported and flowing more and my concern is that the internal wastegate won’t flow enough for me to run a lower boost level without creep. While I may not have an issue at all, the porting was free and allowed me to clean up some rough castings.

So I picked up a 6mt a couple of months ago for a good deal. At the time I had no plans to install it just yet as I’ve put a fair amount of work into my 5mt setup. However, my new engine setup will be heavily ported meaning my lowest possible power level is probably going to be too high and it won’t be long before I start breaking things. Most likely the first to break will be axles but maybe it’s not worth it to continue to invest in the 5mt. Considering selling the whole setup to a fellow builder that’s at a reasonable power level. The 6mt is a late 2007 so no internal oil pump which means my cooler setup will still be of use.
My rear spindle/hub is from a non turbo 2007 and probably isn’t up to the task of increased torque. I didn’t replace the bearing either. I know some have used STI hubs and bearings, which I still may do, but finding what modifications are needed has proved difficult. There’s also the added expense and wanting to replace the used hubs with new only adds to that.
On to my idea...
I’m thinking of building my own spindle (may do this in the front too at some point) similar to what Wisefab makes for the Impreza. Some plate steel, a little machining, both of which I can do myself. However, instead of using rear hubs, I’d use the bolt on style front STI hubs in the back. This would mean I could use a complete STI axle (which I have), making replacements readily available. The CV’s are more than strong enough, and if I need to upgrade, DSS has shafts for 600ft/lbs for under $600. Below are some pics of the Wisefab spindles/uprights. It would look like the rear one, but the hub part like the front one. I’d be eliminating the adapter piece from FFR as they would be 818 specific. I’m looking for the experts to chime in and poke holes in my idea, maybe I’m not thinking of something.

Grabbed some axles out of the attic that I figured I’d keep, turns out they all use the same outer spline with the exception of what I’m running now. The furthest one away is 07 non-turbo outer and wrx inner with the FFR supplied shaft, next is 99 STI, then 04 wrx I think, followed by the 07 STI axles that came with the trans. I might be able to do this much easier and cheaper by modifying and adapting the 07 non-turbo rear spindle to the 07 STI front bearing. If I go this route then I’ll have to use one of the rear axle outer cv’s as the fronts with the tone ring are too fat to fit into the spindle. My goal is to only have to buy bearings/hubs but I realize I might have to buy a axle shaft if one of these doesn’t work.
139293
It might make more sense if I mentioned that I’m no longer using the rear drum handbrake and plan to duplicate my 2 piece DBA front rotor and Z32 calliper front setup on the rear. At the time I had that part of the build done it wasn’t known that matching brakes are preferred on the 818.

Engine build is underway. She'll now have the brap brap idle that modified rotaries are known for as well as even more power potential than before. Typically bridgeports and peripheral ports idle around 1500-2000rpm, I should be able to get it closer to 1000rpm with the drive by wire.

Modified the frame today for the 6mt. Used my lowered mount from the 5mt and fortunately the washers scored the paint so I just bolted it up where the 5mt mounted. Set the input shaft at the right elevation and mocked up the new tubing. Also weighed the 6mt as is, no fluid, no conversion.

6mt is installed!
141452
After the 2wd conversion it’s down to 163lbs. My 5mt is 104lbs, so it’s an extra 60lbs behind the rear axle. I’ll leave the 6mt in for this coming summer’s testing and tuning, but I’ll keep the RA 5mt as I might want to try it later on and see if I can feel the difference. Of course that’ll have to wait until I’m comfortable enough with the car on track to be able to measure the change.
My 6mt is a 2007 without the pump, and while it’s supported by FFR I didn’t feel like paying 1/3 of my transmission cost ($500cad w/ shipping) for the adapter. I mostly followed John’s (Hobby Racer) instructions, but the DCCD is quite different than the VSCD so my welded adapter looks different. I’ll eventually edit my video on it and add the info to his 6mt thread.
141453
Welding the tail housing was a huge PITA. There’s just no getting it clean, contaminated right through. But it’s welded on both sides and I leak tested it. Using my modified slim transmission mount, and my engine sitting 1/4” higher on the mounts I had to trim the rear frame. Mounts are fairly solid and there’s about a credit cards width gap, lol
141454
Transmission oil pan is just below the frame so I’ll have to cut a hole in the diffuser to clear it. I wonder if it’s worth removing it and welding on some cooling fins as they’ll be in some good airflow.

That would be excellent. I've been hoping someone would add DCCD specific instructions for those looking to convert that style of transmission.

Adam have you considered remolding the diffuser surface after you cut a clearance hole? Sticking a bluff body in the roof of your diffuser is less-than-ideal. If you smooth this out though, the air won't mind much.
My trans platform mods dropped the trans (5MT) far below the frame, but I don't want flow interrupted. So I'm going to just mold around it. Just a thought.

Finally able to catch everyone up on the project! Car is really coming together nicely, but unfortunately it isn't all good news. Going to be a busy winter, but I'm confident she'll be ready and waiting for spring! Just found out a track near me (10mins away!) is reopening and I'm so pumped. It's a technical and tight little track designed for karting and bikes, basically auto x on steroids with walls and gravel pits! So I now have 2 tracks close by to put the car and myself to the test.

Starting to sort out my axle, hub, and brake upgrades. I assembled the front 07 STI axles with rear outer cv’s. I’ve cut up my 07 Impreza hubs to use a bolt on STI front hub/bearings. I’ll eventually source STI front knuckles so I can run the same bearings all around. My wheels and rotors have both 5x100 and 5x114.3 holes as I knew this would eventually be happening. Today I test fitted the axle to make sure it will work, and it will, still have a 1/2” of in/out play with the axle level. I’ll be using a square brake setup, STI front calipers and Z32 aluminum calipers will be on all 4 corners now. Calipers will show up tomorrow and I’ll figure out how to mount them. Also need to make the flange to bolt in the hub to as it’s currently a light press fit.

Well it's done, and I think editing the video took longer than the whole engine build. That's ok, I enjoy the end result and sharing my build. This video is obviously rotary engine specific and might be boring to anyone not interested in my Doritos, however if you skip to about the 35 minute mark (yep, she's a long one!) then there's a time-lapse of assembly that might interest you. Engine is now fully assembled and installed, and with any luck I'll be firing it up for the first time tomorrow.

Modified my ZDM 5mt shift linkage to fit the 6mt. All gears are easily found and have a crisp feel, little to no flex felt from the cables. I'll probably add shift stoppers to the base of the kTuned shifter at some point so I can slam the gears and feel a firm stop. I'd imagine that would make it feel like traditional mechanical setup. Still need to cut down and clean up the rear bracket but first I need to sort out my reverse lockout. I recall someone using a lever and bike cable in a build thread, but I don't remember who. It's unfortunate how much good information gets lost in build threads. Has anyone done the reverse lockout electronically with a solenoid or actuator?

I ended up using a twist lock, push pull cable mounted left of the driver's seat. The lock helps me make sure nothing moves on the track. I have a different set up in the back and used the factory arm on the lock out with a fabricated bracket. There are pics in my build thread.
If I remember correctly, Hobby Racer did a really excellent mod as well. His design would not fit on my transmission because we have different attachments in the back.
You definitely want this or finding 5th is a nightmare, at least on the track.

Cable is probably the most reliable way to go, but I had it in my head to try and do it electronically. I used a door lock actuator that tucked nicely in under my cable bulkhead bracket. 6” adjustable rod to my modified factory lever. Failsafe is no reverse, but I can change that by adjusting the rod if so inclined. Got 4 actuators for $20cad on Amazon, and it has more than enough pull. Flip a switch on the console and reverse becomes available. I’m really happy with how the whole setup came out. Took longer to do it neatly, but definitely worth it. Need to change out the rod ends to match the other bits but that can be done later.

Only mechanical thing left to sort out is the hub/brake assembly. But my calipers are stuck in Memphis with FedEx.
Got some ecu issues sorted a couple days ago, and then the temperature plummeted into the -20’s. Will warm up in the next few days so I’ll fire up the rebuilt engine. My anxiety level about starting this motor is brutal. So much time and money tied up into one moment. Wish me luck!

An innovative solution. The other thing I learned is that there are multiple position in the rotation of the lever that either allow or prevent reverse. I solved that with some mechanical stops in my linkage.

I noticed that too. The manual makes it seem like the hole needs to be aligned to lockout reverse. If someone wanted more return spring pressure they could just rotate it more and find the next lockout position.

Rear brake and hub mods are coming together. Still have some work left on the brackets, I gotta add a flange for the hub, and of course a bunch of welding. But it’s coming along nicely, spring is right around the corner and this is the last modification required to make it driveable.

I wish mine was that close to being drive able :D
I would be careful about welding directly on the hub that close to the bearing location. The casting will most likely distort slightly from the heat and make the bearing hole out of round. You may need to precision bore / hone out the hubs afterward.

I know it’s hard to tell from that picture but I’m using bolt on STI front hubs that fit in a piece that will be welded after. This is a base model knuckle that was opened up to accommodate the STI axle. No part of the old assembly bore is relevant anymore. I’ll detach the new hub bore and flange before welding the caliper mount and then weld it on after. While it’s a “bolt on” hub, it’s still a slight press fit.

Really dragging my feet on my knuckle modifications. Almost done! Lots of care needed when welding to cast, pre/post heating, peening, and slow cooling. I’m using some dye penetrant to check for hairline cracks. No cracks, but found a few pinholes that could be a future starting point for a crack. Need to grind them out and weld them up and then I can start assembly. Unfortunately my rotors won’t be here until I head away for work again, but hopefully I’ll have these done and mounted before I leave so it’s only fitting the rotors and calipers left.

We all understand how much time working on these beasts take and video editing/posting isn't priority. Unless you teach your wife how to do it. Could you? :)
So, when should we expect a street or track video of you driving those massive rubbers?

I have a first start video filmed, and now that it’s all back together I’m just working on the tuning. Might take it for a drive tomorrow.

A lot of that is for cooling, but mostly detonation protection. Most tuners don’t use knock sensors cause once you can detect it, it’s too late.

Oh wow, 1023kg? I am at 1040, how can it be so close to a heavy VR6 with G50...
You don't have any idea what makes it fatter than expected?
Canadian818
08-04-2022, 01:40 PM
Hey Frank, the 6mt is 70lbs more than a 5mt and I doubt the g50 weighs any less then the 6mt at 163lbs dry. Also while a rotary is in fact a small package it isn’t lighter than the ej25. I have a large rad, and two large oil coolers with 30ft of -10 oil line all full (7-8L of oil). Three fuel pumps. The turbo is 30lbs. The extra body work making it widebody. Sound deadening on the entire floor and all 4 wheel wells. 13” vented rotors front and back. And my wheels/tires are particularly heavy, the rear wheels are 27lbs each! (Something I hope to remedy in the near future)
It's definitely heavier then I expected, but it’s not hard to account for it all.
Frank818
08-05-2022, 03:05 PM
The turbo is 30mins.
You got a 30-minutes turbo? How does it work, after 30mins it gets heavier? LOOLLLLL
I am impressed about the 6mt, the G50 is 153lbs dry, that's still 10 pounds less than the 6mt!
And all the other stuff you added above makes a lot of sense... It takes what it takes to get your car where you wanted (which is pretty darn far!), I believe the weight is the compromise most of us did. In the end it's still lighter than a Lotus, so we're good. :D
27lbs for the rear wheels, you probably mean 27lbs for the RIM alone. It's a wide rim!
So... you driving it more often, now? :)

And yes each rear wheel is 27lbs, the wheel and tire combined are 60lbs!
I’ve been driving it, slowly tinkering with the tune and at the same time learning more and more about tuning. At the same time I’ve been tracking my rx8 and improving my driving skills prior to tracking this little monster. With any luck I’ll be tuned well enough for the track in the next month and then start testing there. At some point I’d like to get it on a dyno, but that can wait until later in the fall when the track is closed.

I've been terrible with filming and editing the progress of this build. The last 10% of any build seems to take the longest, and is so tedious that it doesn't make for good content (wholesome or otherwise, lol). Lots of driving videos sprinkled in there, but not being from the tik-tok generation I decided to reward those with attention spans and the better clips are later in the video.

The primaries had pre-chambers and twin pipes continued back to the rear muffler which was kind of a Borla copy. The sound was what I described as "titanium bees". It was terrific and not too loud.

I love a clean FB, very nice car! With some good resonators a rotary can sound good and not crazy loud. My problem is I don’t have the room for long resonators or pre-chambers like on a rx7. The car also got quite a bit louder after the rebuild as I went aggressive with the engine porting. I’m about halfway done the new exhaust now. I’m using a much bigger muffler that’s 1 into 2 and then two resonators but I’ve eliminated the cat. It should flow better than before and with any luck be quieter too. It’s using up all the real estate above and on the sides of the trans and adding weight, so hopefully it’s not for nothing.

C818,
My Nikki four barrel was small, the Racing Beat Holley would have made more power.
I had bridge ported secondaries and stock primaries that resulted in great idle and throttle response. Getting vacuum and velocity across the venturis is a challenge.
As mentioned on the forum before, the SCCA GT3 RX7s use a large muffler can with lava rocks inside. When they disintegrate they open the can and put in new rocks.
The sound level was legal on the track, I don't know about the street.
