View Full Version : Fuel Pump Splicing
Hey guys quick question on the fuel pump wiring that has me a little concerned. I just assembled my fuel pump into the provided tank. The manual says to splice the connectors via Solder and heat shrink. I didn't have the tools available so I crimped w/ butt connectors and wrapped tightly with electrical tape. I was happy with the job and installed it, completely ignoring the fact that this thing sits in the fuel tank. So after thinking about it post install I'm concerned that fuel may seep into the splice, create a spark, and boom!
Am I overly concerned or do I need to take it out and try a different solution?

yes, you need to solder and shrink it, an intermittant connection could indeed spark. buy a small soldering iron and a bunch of the heat shrink tubing, you will need it elsewhere

I use heat shrink crimp connectors as soldered wires can break over time.

I use the same stuff. Very few OEM use solder. Good crimps last longer than solder.

True but they need to be proper crimps, not the JUNK that most of us have/use! :-)
since I can't do a proper crimp I solder (doesn't hurt that I was a process engineer for soldering operations in my past life, had papers published and presented at NEPCON in the 80's so I'm very comfortable with soldering)
Tape should only be used as a bundling medium

I have the proper stuff, connectors and heat shrink, both military grade, I mean really good grade:)

I don't think you'll ever have the right air-fuel ratio in the tank to cause an explosion from a fuel pump wiring spark. I suspect your pump would simply stop working.

Natural gas lines are welded with the gas running to reduce risk of explosion and the Upper Explosive Limit of gasoline is even lower than methane.
