I finally have a set of custom aluminum cooling tubes installed on my 818. These will be available in kit form through me. I still have not come up with final pricing yet. Please tell me what you think. These should be more reliable then the corrugated hoses and adapters supplied with the kit. They will be available for the stock 2.0 motor and stock radiator. There will also be hoses available for the custom aluminum radiator seen in my pictures.

Those look great. I would think that a lot of 818 builders will want this option.

I didn't know I needed those, but now I want those cool pipes. But, I'll need pipes for an 06 donor. Possible soon?

Pete. Why would the 06 be any different?

When will you have one for the 2.5 turbo?

Looks like a nice way to make the coolant tubes a cleaner installation. $200 for the piping including couplers/clamps?

Details on your aluminum radiator set up. I like how you have the cap positioned.

Nkw. Why would the 2.5 be any different? Excuse my ignorance but I am not that familiar with all the different configurations.

Metros. Unfortunately it will be considerably more than that. Still working out the pricing.
The radiator is a replacement 2 core aluminum unit which is a direct replacement for the pre 2002 imprezza. I bought it on eBay.

I'm learning as well and I'm not sure if there is a difference. Just asked because you stated for the 2.0 so I thought maybe there was a difference.

The 2.0 and 2.5 will use the same tubes, which are totally awesome Mike.

I love them! But if they will truly be considerably more than $200, I will unfortunately have to pass. :(

How would this work with your AWIC system I am getting from you?

Looks nice Mike. Have you checked whether the dead pedal and side plate will clear the piping in the front of the passenger compartment?

Thanks for the response Mike. Just throwing out the price point where I'm interested, per your request.

Looks like a well designed kit.

Wow, my budget is seriously developing governmental style cost overruns. LOL. This is a quality upgrade great work. Question, how will burping the system be affected using the solid tubing? On the GRM builds videos #20 on the cooling system, Wayne has a great tip at the end on getting the air out by lifting the radiator while someone pours coolant into the radiator.

see my build thread and Mechie3 build thread for photos re burping an 818

put a small fitting into the aluminum upper radiator hose housing, just behind where the hose slips on, connect it to the turbo expansion tank fitting that used to go to the radiator on the upper right corner (Metalmaker did it with a coupling in the upper hose)

Frank, how is that going to work if you will be using your VW engine??

Frank818
12-28-2013, 09:26 PM
I will have to mod some of it, but I plan on using the Subie's rad. And of course the tubes along the doors will be the same, but the ones in the engine bay will most probably require some fab. I know about how much it could cost me to get a custom set done locally, so if Mike's final price is somewhat under + if I believe the added cost of moding some tubes will remain under my local guy, then I think it may be a good choice for me. A lot of "if's", I know, but that's all it's been since the beginning when I started analyzing doing the build with the VW. lolll

It looks like pricing is going to be around $550.00 plus shipping for the complete set. We can also sell the front and back seperate. Keep in mind these are custom mandrel bent and beaded aluminum tubes. Also comes with the rubber hoses and clamps needed to install.
