Congrats on the 2nd start, as the 1st actually failed. :) Or maybe it wasn't a start and the 2nd was the real 1st start... so many questions! loll

With the rims being that close to the trailing arms, youll have rub when turning. I had to remove my balancing weights from the lip and have them be placed on the inside of the rim due to rub when turning. I have aftermarket trailing arms.

But your 15min is equivalent to anyone else's hour. Ref your 10 hour video which is easily someone else's 40 :D

Well it seems I'm finding all the problems. Found that the passager side trans seal was leaking after I changed the trans crush washer. After that was done my fuel pump I bought over a year ago decided to go out. Grrrr but I guess I'd rather everything that wants to mess up to do it now rather than once it is all together. So tomorrow I'm planning to take my seat out and replace the fuel pump.

If you still have your old fuel pump you could test it first to see if the problem is actually with your fuel pump controller.

Fuel pump was drawing 10 amps with no flow, it's the pump.

Yep I agree. Is that common for aftermarket fuel pumps? or do you think something else caused it to burn out?

Who nows but I'm happy it happened now rather then at the tune or when I'm 5 miles down the road for the first time

So found the pump was fine just not the wiring to it lol! The power wire separated where I put I heat-shrink. It was my first one and that wire endured a lot going on the tank. For the good news got it ruining again and took it for a spin!

Wow I've been slacking on my updates. So did get the car tuned and ended up with 303 hp and 316ftlbs at the wheels.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rFkTJzCl3mE&feature=share

However I have been fighting all kinds of issues. One of those those is the fuel tank which leaks at both Seals. Factory fives solution was to send me out more seals. I heard else where that it is common for it to leak and iI should use a fuel safe sealant. I went to do just that and had to fight the fuel pump to go back in the tank for over 2 hours. It had me so frustrated iI was ready to throw it out then and there. As a result of my experience thus far with fuel tank coupled with the fact that there is no baffling in the tank I plan to put a Boyd tank in when iI put the wiring down the tunnel. Oh also the way the ff5 tank is the level sensor reads full when it is only half full.

So i put an air to oil seperator catch can setup but it keeps filling the the catch can in a matter of min. On top of that the car likes to go to a rough idle after coming off full throttle. It was thought that maybe there was an exhaust leak so I replaced all the exhaust gaskets but the problem still exists. I never did a leak down test but did do a compression test. For the compression test I had 132 psi on all four cylinders. In getting the impression that I may have broken piston rings. This is not fun. I knew I would need to rebuild the motor at some point but didn't want to do soon.

nkw8181

Ended up taking the motor out and it is being rebuilt do to engine blow by. It will be a beast when done!! Here is the list of what I'm having done to the motor as well as other more recent upgrades:

wiseco 100mm pistons
manley forged rods
crossdrilled forged crank
king race bearings
supertech stainless/inconel valve set, dual springs, titanium
retainers, viton valve seals
kelford cams 199c (272 cams)
arp head studs
ID 1000 injectors
Radium Fuel rails
Radium surge tank
Boyd tank

I got the Boyd tank because I am tired of messing with the leaking stock one. also as an added benefit it will give me more space for the wires and cables to pass through. The surge tank is to eliminate the risk of fuel starvation. The fuel rails aren't needed but man will they look nice! I will figure out the hose plumbing once I have the engine back in the car.

I have now started on the body and have the sails installed as well as the hinges for the engine cover and trunk. I Had to add spacers to offset these back due to my body placement. the 5/8 ths offset is 1 1/8 for me to make things fit the best. I have to still trim the covers down to fit flush. I bought some polyethylene tubing to use as a form to apply carbon-fiber/ fiberglass over it to reinforce the body panels. Factory Five said they used Vinyl resin on the body panels so I will use the same. Vinyl has adverse affects on foam which is why I found the polyethylene tubing to use.

Wow that motor is really going to be a beast. Should be able to run as much boost as you want with that setup. When's dyno day?

That sounds like a great list of engine mods, very similar to what I did. Since you're rebuilding the heads might I suggest getting some sti shimless buckets? They're a supporting mod for a higher reving engine and are fairly cheap - I think my used set was about $100. Also, I might've missed it but what turbo are you running? You should be able to run something pretty nice with all the engine mods.

I Have a 20G. should be in the high 300's maybe break 400 on power. STiWRD. I'll ask about shimless buckets. with the upgraded springs and the rest of the mods I should be good for 550 hp and 8500 rpm safely all day long. not that I'm going to shoot for that much power as that would be just INSANE in one of these :)

Tamra
10-05-2015, 12:01 PM
We considered the shimless buckets a must do item for revving over stock limits. Not sure how you could get used ones though, since each one has to fit specifically (not a drop in part). I want to say the shimless buckets were close to $300.

If you're buying new valves, you can lap them to match just about any used shimless bucket. But you're correct about using shimless buckets with used valves. As long as the used buckets don't show any signs of wear and you can achieve the correct gap, you're good to go.

I didn't like how flimsy the body panels are so I am reinforcing them with carbon fiber. I spoke with factory five to find out the resin type used for the body so i could use the same. They use vinyl resin fyi. I found a polyethylene hose to use as a stiffener and the laid carbon fiber over it. Seems pretty stiff to me. I want to do something similar to all the panels.

Also got the trunk lid and engine cover trimmed and installed. The body panels are not centered though even though measurements are the same side to side. I still had to trim the engine cover to clear the roll bar even with my body being back .5 in further. Having the body further back has come with its own set of challenges. I made spacers with washers to move the engine and trunk hinges back and now i need to widen the door hinge mounting on the frame because the bracket won't sit flush to the fiberglass.

Looking good. Why did you move the body back further, out of curiosity?

We couldn't move the body back because the front end wouldn't work for us. Our fenders wouldn't reach the side sails and also the hood stopped fitting against the windshield correctly, so our body ended up being fairly far forward to make everything work together nicely.

The black stuff is carbon fiber? You must have paid a fortune for that or not?

nkw8181
10-13-2015, 07:06 PM
It is second hand so a bit cheaper. ~22 $ per yard by 50 in wide.

I moved it back so i didn't need to cut such a big cutout in the engine cover. The front hasn't been fitted fully yet but i think I can make it work once i get the door part sorted. You can see there wasn't much material taken from the engine cover.

Does it really stiffen enough so that you can pull up the front hood without it jiggling?

nkw8181
10-15-2015, 10:00 AM
I haven't mounted it yet but it is a world stiffer. It may still flex a little but I would guess that there is a 75% reduction in flexing at least

Great work on the panel stiffening! I did the same but with aluminum bar and fiberglass. I like your solution way better. I'll copy you on the trunk and engine cover.

That looks like a good option. If you are looking for additional ideas to strengthen, you could use balsa wood like they did on the old Porsche 914-6 hoods and deck lids:

What concerns me is that if we need to bend a little some panels, like the hood for instance to clear the single wiper solution, maybe it won't bend enough anymore with the CF inside. And it's pretty hard to apply the CF while the hood is on and closed.

My hood fits over a single wiper with no mods.
You should have your hood on and closed while it dries so it forms to the car.

Ops I didn't do that (the hood on the car while drying) but I think I'll try that on the others. Just tricky to put it is place at the right time. Basically once it is tacky. I did support my hood as close as I could to its installed shape. Balsa wood is a great idea! And may be easier to work with. Carbon fiber really likes something to adhear to. It doesn't like thin air.

I used 1/2 by 3/4 balsa standing on edge for the front edge of my humps. The humps were weak at the 4 roll bar cut outs.
I did have to notch the balsa some to clear the roll bars.

Gonna try photobucket vs imgur. So I got the doors mounted and Bob I used your idea of balsa wood for this last part. It is stiff enough that I can lower the hood down with one corner and the other side touches at the same (or close enough). Enjoy

Picked up a 6 speed. something I want to point out and I mentioned this to Factory Five already as well. The FF 6 speed conversion only works on a trans with a DCCD and the last three digits of the dccd being 190. The internal trans pics are from a 05 JDM spec C. Luckily I was able to swap it out for an 06 JDM STI and conversion done. Engine is still at the machine shop the last time Auto Science (my local shop) checked So I've been making progress on the body. Since I moved the body back an additional .5 in I ended up making new latch mounting brackets. Got started on installing all Zero decibels louvers so i can get them all powdercoated.

Nolan had recommended Auto Science to me for our engine rebuild and I dropped off our engine and transmission there yesterday. He had also invited my son and I over to take a look at his 818S so we headed over afterwards.

Nolan is doing some great work on that car and it looks fantastic. I really appreciate the opportunity to see his build and be on the receiving end of so much advice and lessons learned. It will all be very helpful for when our kit arrives.

I just wanted to say Thanks again Nolan!

The first one we stopped because the turbo oil line wasn't tight. The second one is a little long but I figured some would enjoy it. We stopped because of air in the coolant system. I'm the one pushing the accelerator. The guy looking for leaks is my friend Ryan who has been working on the car with me from the beginning.

Been busy since my last post. 6 speed shifter brackets installed as well as reverse lockout disabled, created a mounted bracket to support the fuel Y blocks, back half of modified center console installed, both seats installed, created mounting brackets for the fuse boxes and the hazard switch, made a bracket to allow the guage cluster to be installed, made new dash mounting brackets (provided ones did not reach) and finally installed the dash which was still a pain. There's about 20 pics showing this below.

I used shelack ( I can't spell it) as shown in the manual for the conversion.

lets see if photobucket is any better. So here's an update. Got the car tuned and it took a while to iron out an idle issue but appears to be resolved. Josh (touchstone) came over and helped my by wiring up my headlights and another buddy made a stiffer accelerator pedal ( supplied one flexed alot). While I designed a why to use the reverse lockout feature. I thought that the lockout was spring loaded into 6th but it was in reverse so I then designed what I have now which works. I used a door lock actuator and have a button under the left of my seat that you push to get the car in reverse. We also got the center console rapped with vinyl. so here is a video of the tune :) pics soon to follow

386 is great for a 20g on pump gas! Since the RPMs are skewed on that dyno plot, what RPM is peak torque actually hitting?

nkw8181
03-09-2016, 08:44 PM
not quite sure where the max torque is. also I have a FP 71HTA turbo. the power is limited not by the motor or turbo but by the MAF sensor (hits its limit of 5v if we give anymore boost). I think it is only at 21-22 lbs of boost but no complaints from me!

Got the new sti Guage installed and the abs light to turn I off by putting power to i10 pin 18. Blue carbon fiber /kevlar installed on dash and side of doors (still covered in tape. Side sails, nose, front finders instwlled. Doors still aren't quite right and temp installed the rear. I have to pull the bumper back so that it doesn't rest on my shifter linkage. Open to ideas on what to attach to throw mesh where I need to make a pass through for the exhaust. Also trimmed my fuel filler pipe to fit with the Boyd tank.

I noticed you had some sections of metal tubing and couplers from the fuel filler cap to the tank. If you didn't roll a bead on the metal, it may leak fuel when topped off. Those FFR couplers have a generous amount of ID clearance to the metal tubes - I wouldn't call them very snug. I actually bought a bead roller and tried to roll some beads but it cam out not as good as I wanted since the filler tube is stainless and much harder than aluminum. I might get one of these Gates tubes to simplify the number of couplers:

3M Rubberized, eh? Supposed to reduce noise under the panel? For example in the wheel wells, it's supposed to reduce road/tire noise?

I'm interested to know how 3m rubberized undercoat holds up to the heat in the engine compartment, if that is what you are using. I'd think it would get soft and gummy. I want to use something like that or rhino liner on mine but weight and durability to heat are both concerns for me.

Frank818
04-13-2016, 06:30 AM
You could probably apply some heat shield wrap/foil over the 3M stuff, although I'm not sure if it would reduce the good effects of the 3M stuff.

The best I have found is Lizard Skin Ceramic spray insulation. You can brush it on as well and then paint it any color you like. Another benefit is that it is water base.

All of the bedliners I have experienced did not perform well around high engine heat

Frank818
04-13-2016, 05:33 PM
Yeah and that lizard stuff is... say, rather expensive. Couldn't see any temp rating but they do say Class A Fire Rated, which is the lowest flame spread, the one you'd want. It probably handles the heat of the engine, I guess.

JB Weld holds up very well to heat. I had a hole poked through a bellhousing once due to a failed clutch. The hole went through to the inside of the trans. A friend told me JB would patch it and hold. I made a $20 bet that it wouldnt. I lost that bet. Held for the next two years i owned it and probably long after. Make sure you prep well.

Figured out eBay a bit better. Added a walk around video and a link to this build thread.

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/232455245306
