View Full Version : Radiator support mounting tab spacing - quick question

I know we have to cut the one steering rack bolt down to about 2.2" to get the mounting bolts to clear, that's not my issue.
On our 818R there's a substantial gap between the mounting tabs on the frame and the mounting tabs on the radiator support. Are we just shimming this with washers? Smashing it down and bending the tabs? Am I the only one with this fitment issue?
Picture for clarity - this is with the drivers side mount bolted in place, I'm left with a ~1/4" gap on the passenger side:

I had the same problem. I just put two 90 degree bends in each bracket to get the correct spacing. Rick

I made my own. It's a flate plate with two holes, one for a screw one for the stock rubber bushing. Underneath that is a rod with a through hole. The screw holds it all together by bolting into the subframe.

Craig, I think he's talking about the radiator support to the frame, at the bottom. Not the lifting of the radiator so it clears the rack...

I didn't see the picture before. I think I remember mine being too tight.

By any chance is the radiator frame mounted to the inside of the mount on the driver side of the car? That would cause your gap.

No, I should have clarified, outside on both. It's a substantial gap, nothing some spacers can't fix, already 4,532 on the car.

Most the cars out there have a problem with the steering rack not being centered in the car. Maybe ffr fixed that on your chassis but forgot to move the bracket on the radiator frame.

Something has changed... That mount should be flush.. I would contact FFR by phone and ask

I've got the same fit problem as SixStar. Has anyone found the solution to mounting the radiator support to the frame at the bottom? My tabs on the frame and the radiator support are exactly the same spacing so the support tabs won't fit inside or outside. It fits with one inside and the other outside, but that's off-center. I don't want to swing the BFH . . . yet.

I'll answer my own question for those following. The tabs on my radiator support were exactly the same spacing as the tabs on the frame, but the manual shows them on the outside of the frame tabs. I figured that the most important thing is that the radiator support should be centered so I measured and marked the center of the frame and the center of the radiator support. One side lined up but the other side (driver side) had a 3/8" gap. Using the precision tools pictured, I persuaded the two tabs to line up enough to bolt together. Not pretty, but the radiator mount is now solid and centered.

Ha ha, nice!!!
I bought some 3/8" x 1" spacers that we're going to cut up if the bending doesn't work. What's 4 more spacers in the grand scheme of the 818 afterall..... powered by spacers!!!

Were those tools part of Vman's persuader kit? :D
