View Full Version : Mk 3.1 getting a Mk4 trunk lid - a different question

Hi guys,

I've tried the trunk lid from my Mk3.1 on a friend's Mk4 and it fits - ergo, the Mk4 trunk will fit my Mk3.1. I'm in the process of ordering one very soon.

But I have a different sort of question:

I was told by FFR Tech Support today that the trunk brace bar (where the Mk4 trunk hinge brackets are welded) was moved back 'slightly' from the location on the Mk3.1.

Do you know the exact measurement of 'slightly'? I'm planning to order and use the hidden trunk hinge set from the Mk4 as well, but I need to build the brackets for the hinge arms to mount to inside the trunk.

The Mk4 hinge brackets are 1.125" long from the trunk brace bar to the tip and I'm hoping to be able to make an educated guess as to how long I need to make them to mount to the Mk3.1 trunk brace.

Thanks for any help.

Not to take a sale away from FFR but maybe the better choice would be to order Breeze hidden trunk hinges. They are adjustable in that direction and could save you some headaches. If thats not an option maybe you could make your hinges points adjustable instead of fixed like FFRs. The hidden hinges are the way to go no matter who's you choose

I'd thought about the Breeze hinges but they're designed for a Mk2 trunk lid and I've read about the challenges of making them work with a Mk3.1 - much less a Mk4 trunk lid.

I can make the bracket pivot holes slotted if need be - that's a good idea. I can also make them the same as stock and use shims behind them if necessary to space them back. There are multiple options but I'd like to at least get an idea of the distance the bar moved.

I've got a Mk3 and a Mk4 sitting side by side in the garage right now. I'll get you some measurements shortly.

OK, just measured. "Slightly" indeed! Measuring from the body lip (the lip that the seal presses onto) at the upper center of the trunk opening forward to the rear side of the square tube I get 1.75" for the Mk4 and 1.875" on the Mk3. Heck body positioning on the chassis or jig inconsistency could account for more than 1/8 of an inch! Anyway, that's what it is on these two samples.

Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks a BUNCH Jeff. It looks like I'll just build the brackets with slots to allow for that minimal adjustment.
