When i go to register the kit car, the State Patrol is going to want the donor vehicle information. How would i go about registering the kit car with the motor/trans from the donor car when im technically not a registered wrecker. Is there paperwork to fill out that would classify the car as a parts car? I would have a bill of sale not but not the registered owner with title in hand. I know this one would be a difficult one to answer but maybe someone has some experience with this.

CoPart sent me the title with the car so you don't have an issue. It is transferred to you.

Did they have any issues with you pulling parts off of it? Did they have any issues with what you did with the rest of the car? DId they even ask?

Depends on the state, but generally to register it the state wants the MSO from FFR and have the State PD check it against their database for stolen cars, then they perform a safety inspection and compliance. Then you take that paperwork to the DMV and apply for a new title.

So are you saying that the donor vehicle engine and trans plays no part in the registration other than safety? They will not be asking where it came from?

I don't understand your questions

The DMW wants to know where the parts come from and that you own them legally. They also want to charge you sales tax if your state has a sales tax.

So I have a bill of sale from Copart and the WRX title, I have a bill of sale and MSO from FFR

Those document prove that I own the parts that were assembled into a car. Someone has to verify that it is safe for the road (varies by state)

my state generates a VIN, I get it inscribed on the plate provided by FFR and attach it to the chassis

that's the gist of it

In Ohio they want a Title or Receipts from company for all major components.
Here is a quote from the code:

Present all required documentation for salvage inspections:
• Ohio salvage title in the name of the person applying for title. Assigned titles and out-of-state
salvage titles are not accepted.
• Receipts for all replaced "major component parts" (listed below). This includes the Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) of the source vehicle. If receipts are from a casual sale by an
individual, they must be notarized. Photocopies of receipts are not acceptable.
• The inspection officer may require receipts or documentation for any part of questionable origin
(ORC, Section 4505.11).

Major Component Parts List *
Air Bag(s) Bumper Dash Deck Lid Doors Engine Frame
Front Fenders Hatchback Hood Rear Door Rear Quarters Transmission Tailgate
* Receipts may also be required for any parts with a fair market value of $100.00 or more.
Any parts presented that are questionable or missing vehicle identification numbers are
subject to seizure.

Sorry if im being confusing.

SO what ive got out of this is the following; as long as i have the MSO from FFR and a bill of sale from Copart or IAAI i should be golden for registration.

What about parting out the rest of the parts vehicle? Is the DMV going to want to want to know where the rest of it went? Is there an issue selling the parts on Craigslist?

I appreciate the input

Now I understand your question.

First thing, you are not going registering your donor.

You are building a new car with parts from FFR and Coparts. You must first go through a process (my post above) to get a new title and new VIN number. Once you have those and in some states, an emission test, you are golden to get your new registration.

You can sell or do what you please with the extra parts.
One thing you can't do, is put the salvage car back on the road.

Thats exactly what i was looking for. So as long as the donor is in my name, it's a non issue. Thanks Bob!

Not your fault that you don't know what question to ask!

The Governor will be hitting m up for a bunch of taxes for my out of state purchases when I register mine next spring/summer

My "extra" parts are all over the US, EBay is a true wonder. I sold some Honda VFR800 parts and one is in Isreal!
