View Full Version : IMPORTANT : Registration and New Member Functionality PLEASE READ

Hello, If you are trying to register for this site or have recently done so, this is some important information you need to know about two topics: Registration, and New Member Permissions.
Re: Registering for the forum...
All new registrations are moderated before you can post your first post. This may add a delay between registering and being able to post.
The registration process includes Biography as a required field which has to be filled with something relating to why you are on this site.
The registration form states:
Fill in a few details about yourself, and specifically, why you are signing up for this forum. This field is required, and is used to help verify you are not a spammer. Don't put gibberish or generic answers in this field, as it will be viewed by the membership moderator after signup. If the moderator can't tie this answer to why you have signed up for this site, your membership request will be denied, and you will have to re-register!
Let me reiterate: If you register for the site and don't put something related to this site in the Bio field your registration will be rejected. Small, generic answers like "New to site", "Car Lover", "Mechanic" will get you rejected. If you get a rejection email or no response from the site within 48 hrs after trying to register then click this Contact Us (http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/sendmessage.php) link to get in touch and we'll get you registered.
Re: New Member Permissions... (Supporting Vendors and current PRIVATE PARTY - ie: non-commercial entity - FFR owners are exempt from these restrictions. If you are new and currently own a Factory Five, send me a PM and I'll update your status.)
For everyone else who is new to the forum, Welcome! I'm sorry for the restrictions that follow, but since they were put in place we have had virtually NO ongoing spam problems. If you want to request an exemption to the following, send me a PM. Exemption requests are discussed in the thread so feel free to peruse the entire thread and as always, comments are encouraged and welcome. /EDIT
For new members with less than 20 posts these restrictions are as follows:
You do not have access to your blog.
You cannot post a new thread in the FOR SALE classifieds. You can still create a new thread in the WANTED portion of the classifieds. Posting a FOR SALE thread in a WANTED classified forum will be treated as a direct attempt to circumvent the rules and you WILL be penalized, up to and including a temporary or permanent ban.
You can't create a picture album.
You can't create a group of post new threads to a group. You can still post to existing group threads.
You cannot update your profile or have a signature.
You cannot have a custom title
Calendar access is restricted (Thanks for the catch kwb160!)
After you reach 20 posts, your account will be transitioned to another group that has these restrictions removed. This can take up to an hour after you reach 20 posts. We had to take this measure to better fight the ongoing problem of spam.
EDIT: Please note, posting items for sale should always be limited to the classifieds, and continued posting of for sale items in the classifieds - beyond extra parts floating around in your garage for example - may result in you being flagged as a commercial vendor. All commercial vendor postings are confined to supporting vendors. If you are interested in becoming a supporting vendor on our site please see this page for more information:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/content.php?125-Advertisers-and-Supporting-Vendors-Information
As always, comments are welcome.

Taking care of the spammers is difficult at best. Adding another level of "human interaction" when signing up for a new account helps. I've also used "spam o matic" plug ins which work fantastic......Not sure if it available with this software platform or not, but worth looking in to.

Just banned a new member for 2 days for posting that he has a MKIII for sale in a WANTED thread.
I'm just a reader most of the time since I don't have an FF car but I still love the builds and the tech that goes into them. As for the website, I'm part of many forums, both computer, CAD and of course cars and I applaud the admins here for setting rules that I rarely see enforced on other forums. It's good to see that the content is top-notch as well as the members. It makes a treat to read this forum. Keep it up!!!

Thanks Jeff and Pike. I appreciate it. We're still getting hit daily, but the good news is we completely shut down one way they were posting and forced them into doing it in a way that is easy for me to take care of.
I do want to mention that I'm being VERY aggressive with paring down suspected new spammers so if you are a new member and you get banned by mistake just use the contact us form and we'll straighten it out.

Bringing this back to the top to remind all NEW registered users that we are being VERY AGGRESSIVE in banning new accounts that look like spam to us. If you sign up with user names or email addresses that appear to be gibberish there is a strong chance you will be banned. If this happens to you and you want it reversed, PLEASE send us a note via the contact us form and we'll take care of it. (http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/sendmessage.php)

Another bump for an ongoing issue. I've banned a couple of legitimate new users and reversed their ban after they used the "contact us" form to let me know.
I'm very sorry some new folks are getting caught up in this. I will continue to look for better tools but just know that the issue hasn't gone away and we continue the good fight.
The good news is that the users on the site aren't seeing any spam!

David:
I'll take this opportunity to say again that we had spammer problems "up the kazoo" over at Xtremesystems until we took the simple step of
putting into place a $1.00 fee to join paid through paypal.
Spammers will simply not do this because of two reasons: 1) They are too cheap to pay the buck and 2) if they do, they can be traced as they need a legit bank account for a paypal account.
When I tell you that solved the problem I'm not kidding you.
Litterally stopped them dead in their tracks.
I think we're had two in the past year where we would before have 50 a day!
Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Follow up : I said we had two after we instituted this policy and one of them was a very determined little bugger.
BUT he made a big mistake: He pissed me off and that takes a lot to do.
I tracked him down and went to the FEDS with all his info, screenshots,IP's, logs from the forum software and they grabbed him and that SOB is now
enjoying a nice vacation in a federal facility.Seems that when they grabbed his PC's they also found that he was involved in kidde porn and my understanding from the FBI guy I dealt with
is ( his words) "Your 24 year old daughter will be collecting social security before this guy gets out."

David, Thanks for keeping this place a great source of information, ideas and inspiration! Maybe there could be a way to have peple verified by paypal or some other service. I was doing a quick search and found these guys... http://www.telesign.com/. Maybe, there is a solution from them that would make it easier to be sure spammers don't make it through. At my work we also moved to two-factor authentication(I get a text on my phone or use the google authenticator) which is a bit overkill, but more secure. Hope that helps. Best, Thomas

David I am a new member and I am interested in events to meet owners as I educate myself on Factory Five. I was hoping to utilize the Calendar to look for local events but I don't have access. I didn't see the Calendar as being restricted in your restrictions for new member posts so I wanted to see if the Calendar restriction was by design. Thanks...kwb160

kwb160,
Calendar access IS restricted, sorry. If it helps any, the calendar isn't really being utilized. Also, FFR does have an event calendar, have you seen it?:
http://www.factoryfive.com/news-events/2013-schedule/
It's for 2013 (I've made a note and am contacting them to update) but if you do a google search for the events you can find out this year's dates.
Also, you can post to your local region's forum and ask what events are coming up.

NEW REQUIREMENT PLEASE NOTE:
Sorry guys, I'm reviewing all registrations anyway and am still deleting spam posts every day (folks on the forum never see them, but the mods do). Hopefully stepping in between registration and first post will kill the majority of that spam so I've added the following:
The registration process now includes Biography as a required field which has to be filled with something literate. In addition, all new members are now moderated before they can post their first post. This may add a delay between registering and being able to post.
I've added the new requirement to the first post in this thread.

No, you shouldn't need to. I set the field to required during registration and when you update your profile. Current users are not required to fill it in before posting again. That option would be way too disruptive IMO.

FYI, As a newer member, I would gladly pay a buck if it helps maintain the quality of the forum or makes the job of administration easier. I recommend using it for the administrator's beer & pizza fund.
We have implemented rules today for the general protection of the forum.
You can't create a pic album.
You can't create a group of post new threads to a group. You can still post to existing group threads.
You cannot update your profile or have a signature.
You cannot have a custom title
Calendar access is restricted (Thanks for the catch kwb160!)

Gary,
The new user moderation has been very successful in further weeding out spammers. And yes, if your first post has a link in it, it gets routed to moderation automatically. That rule has caught spam in the past and helps keep the site clean. Your first post was approved just about the same time as you posted your comments. I do think that once you get through registration that some of the rules above can be relaxed a bit, like the automatic routing of linked posts to moderation. I don't publish the number but it could come down a bit. Sorry you're first posts had to be what they were but welcome to the forum!

Bob, we know that many FFR builders sometimes have other builds or hobbies and we encourage you to share those with us. Whether it's about building a plane, boat, guitar, Ultima GTR, whatever, those kinds of topics are interesting and welcome as long as you at least own or have owned a Factory Five. The exception is a Smyth, which I feel would not be inappropriate on this forum.
Use the OT forum for your thread and post away!
:)
EDIT: PS That doesn't mean that if you are a future builder or dreamer you can't post about other topics too! Bob is referring to a build thread, which is usually very long and spread out over time.
PPS: If enough of these thread accumulate over time, a separate sub-forum may be required. But not at this time.

I know I am a little late to the thread but I would have had no problem paying $1 to $5 to sign up. You spend more than that just in the mail outs of the lititure and the CD. The information available on this website is absolutely essential if someone hopes to sucessfully complete the construction of one of your cars. The users save a great deal of money just knowing what items to buy when they need a part.

Thanks for keeping the site on a positive path. We have very few snarky posts or successful spammers and that is in no small part due to the webmaster and moderators we have on board. Thanks to all of you.
I would have no problem making a donation to join anywhere from the token $1 to $20 for CF etc. but the payment method would be problematic.
I have no desire to create or keep a paypal account and would use it for no other purpose anyway. I get that the money is likely a great gatekeeper move but options for payment and verification could get cumbersome and I can't see adding even more tasks for our webmaster. Maybe you could make all new applicants purchase one of the FF coloring books that were done as a fundraiser for CF, if that's legal and then grant access based on the list from FF shipping??
Thoughts??

Hi Dale,
I really don't want to put any monetary burden on anyone just to join the site. The measures we have in place now haven't allowed any spammers to post because everyone is audited before they are allowed to. I am thinking about setting up a way for folks to voluntarily support the site though. That would probably be handled through the FFR parts catalog, or we could probably set it up here...

I fully agree with that because it will keep some visitors from joining no matter how low the buy in. So far your methods are working very well, but spammers are
always looking for a new path so IF you are forced to change it at some point my suggestion would be the most acceptable to me YRMV

Hi, Dave. Is there any way to grandfather some of us who have a limited posting record but who are both FFR owners and have been members for several years. I joined this site in 2011 and since then have probably signed on hundreds of times. Likewise my visits where I did not sign in are probably equal to the sign-ins. Secondly, my 33 hot rod kit (#424) was delivered the end of March 2012. I feel anyone who is a documented FFR owner should not be burdened with these new rules. They should have full access to the site. For example I have an FFR suspension item I would like to sell but will not be able to post it until I have 20 posts. I also don't post a lot as I am very inexperienced and really have nothing of importance to offer to the more talented folks who are building these fantastic cars.
Any reconsideration of the current policy for FFR owners would be greatly appreciated.

Absolutely. I'll be happy to promote anyone, by request, who can demonstrate that they've been on the site a while and is a current FFR owner.
I'll be honest and say it's not automatic though. I'll go through your posts and make a judgement call on whether to promote a person.
I've promoted you so you should have full access now.

I'm also registered on the other site as SeniorCitizen if you need to look at more posts by me. I'm hoping to go-cart in the next month or so and at that time I will begin a thread to document my build experiences. My posts will be from the viewpoint of a relatively inexperienced builder, will cover the many issues encountered in this build and the steps taken to resolve the problems. I definitely appreciate your efforts as Admin. Thanks again.

Yes but you did find this stickied thread that is at the top of the Introductions forum so I'm glad your questions have been answered. If I missed your inquiry I do apologize.
Oh and I see you have more than 20 posts so you are good to go!

Westview, I switched over your account so you should have access to albums, your profile, etc.
If your pics aren't showing up still they may be too big. At this point the largest we support is 1900x1900 or (I believe) 2mb
HTH,
:)
David,
Thank you! It appears the file size is the problem. I replaced some pictures with lower resolution and they showed. But now I have a different issue. The pictures I replaced are showing up as attachments that I don't seem to be able to delete. Since I can delete them I can't replace the rest of the pictures because they are being counted in the total number of attachments. Is there a way to fix this?

We have implemented rules today for the general protection of the forum.
You can't create a pic album.
You can't create a group of post new threads to a group. You can still post to existing group threads.
You cannot update your profile or have a signature.
You cannot have a custom title
Calendar access is restricted (Thanks for the catch kwb160!)
The registration process now includes Biography as a required field which has to be filled with something literate. In addition, all new members are now moderated before they can post their first post. This may add a delay between registering and being able to post.
EDIT: Let me reiterate: If you register for the site and don't put something related to this site in the Bio field your account will be deleted.
:)
PS New Supporting Vendors are exempt from these restrictions.
So, please pardon my stupidity...
Since I registered in 2012, I am not a new member (even though I have never posted)?
I don't remember if I filled out a "bio", but now I can't seem to update my profile.
I would like to start a build thread to pay back a bit, since I have benefited greatly from the wisdom here.
Thanks, John, 818R #154

Hi John,
You registered before the bio requirement was implemented so it doesn't apply to you.
I'll update your registration so you can put your pics up and update your profile. I would like you to respect our classifieds rules please. This will be "on your honor". ;)
By the time you read this your status should be updated.
I look forward to reading your build thread!

That helps, I was wondering what was going on, I usually like to do a bio/signature so folks know where I'm at. I did post a link in my welcome post, but it was a video of the car I just bought, so I guess it was okay. :)
I won't uselessly post to other threads...but I suppose with this one I now have three going for me.

Hey David,
I've recently registered and would like to update my profile, add some pictures, etc. I seem to be blocked from doing that so, thought I'd ping you.
Also, I've decided to part with my Spec Racer and would like to run a classified once the forum allows. I read the forum rules and noticed the 20 posting requirement. Is that a fixed requirement or something to avoid spammers?
Thanks for your help,

David,
Just joined, I am in the planning process for my Roadster. I won't be posting much, if at all for a while mainly just reading and collecting ideas for my own build.
I have a couple of toys to sell and a house to finish that we are just starting, before I can buy the complete kit. Have the bosses go ahead though.
I understand the need for spam prevention I am a moderator on another forum, it is a near constant task.
Is there anyway I can edit my own profile or do I need to wait for the 20 post mark?
I have searched google and bing until my laptop gave in. I found WAY more info in the last 30 mins than I did in the last 6 months searching google and Bing.
I would be up for a $5 join fee if its given to a charity, say a known CF charity. I am not willing to pay via PAYPAL. I hate paypal, I got raked over the coals after selling something to a scammer on ebay years ago. I'll be glad to send a check or pay via CC but NOT via PAYPAL.
Also are there any clubs in the Alabama area that feature a heavy FFR presence?

Click on the "Settings" link in the upper right hand corner and then under "My Settings" on the left click the "Edit Profile Picture" link. That should bring up a page that will allow you to upload or link to a file.

Hi David
I also will send a buck to stop spam until the government airs weekly spammer cane-ing on primetime TV.
I have been fighting spammers and virus attacks since '95.
20 posts is fine as well. I tend to lurk and soak in all I can.
I attended the HB event in 13 by accident the wife and I were pier walking and I veered into the mass of cobras , OK, OK, roadsters.
Most of my car + MC building was in the 70s, 80s. in the 2000s I was building Battlebot combat robots.
Hoping to start a 818s soon but I am still fact finding.

Me too!
Tomorrow it will be one year that we have had these restrictions in effect and the forum has bee virtually spam free (I say virtually because there's always that 1 guy who joins without reading the rules). We really nailed it with this update and haven't had to make any adjustments to the rules since, although I do occasionally make adjustment for new users who own FFR's or folks that have been around a while but don't post very often...
We have been reviewing the "state of affairs" and will announce a reduction of some restrictions soon. I feel we can loosen some of these restrictions - like allowing profile editing, for example - without too much risk. More on that later...
I really appreciate the support in tolerating the restrictions for the good of the community!
FFR builders and builders-to-be, you're an awesome bunch!

Hello David, and all the forum members,
I have been wanting to start a kit for a few years now, I believe I had everything planned out until recent events....I AM going to build a Corvette killing 'Type 65 Coupe'
The only thing holding me back from starting this project is I don't have a place of my own nor a garage to use while this is being built. Although I can start this today I would rather purchase a place and then begin the project in a few years, instead of the other way around.

So when I hit 20 posts, will I be able to change email subscription settings, like get an email when someone sends me a PM? I didn't even realize the restrictions until I went to update/edit my profile.
I'm still in analysis paralysis mode where I'm trying to figure out what I want to order and make a game plan. I don't have anything to add at this point and would only be asking questions. I understand the 20 post thing (the other site has a 10 post thing to eliminate spam too), but it's tough for those of us who don't have much to say yet. I'll gladly pay pal a buck to get the restrictions lifted.

Getting to 20 posts is easy. Start a thread introducing yourself. That aught to be good for 4-5. Start a thread or two asking a basic question about the build. Comment in a few threads. Get used to interacting on the site, instead of lurking. The site is much better if you participate, I promise!

The issue is I have nothing to add, and crippling the site, for me, by requiring 20 posts for new members to even edit their profile options is a bit of a pain. Add that to 'asking basic questions' that are easily answered by searching sort of makes it impossible unless I'm posting meaningless things. I'm sure it's fun to interact, but unless I have something constructive to add, I'm just not going to say anything. I understand spam is an issue and all of that, but to cripple legitimate members until they hit a magical threshold is sort of silly.
I can't even update my location yet.

A reminder for those registering. Pay attention to the BIO and name/email fields!! If you put something generic in there - especially the bio field - there's a better than average chance your registration will be rejected. Small, generic answers like "New to site", "Car Lover", "Mechanic" will get you rejected.
Please, once again, pay attention to the instructions on the reg. form.

We interpret that to be spamming the forum. From the Code Of Conduct Agreement (http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/announcement.php?f=3):
Spamming
Spam includes, but is not limited to, the following:
* Excessive off-topic threads
* Posting nonsensical messages
* “Flooding” the forum with similar meaning messages
* Post-Count farming
* Inciting a forum war or riot
* Outwar-style links
* Blatant advertising
* Messages without content
* "Padding" your post count with meaningless or generic posts, especially to gain access to the Classified Section
* Fraudulent activity (Pyramid schemes, chain letters, etc.)
* Free-____ links (i.e. Free iPods, Free PSP, etc. etc.)
Any form of spamming by a member will result in a sanction up to and including being banned.

It has been great fun and educational to read the build threads for Coupes and Roadsters. From the posts that I've been reading it appears that most all of your members go way out of their way to help all the newbies with any questions they might have. THAT is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to join because in this day and age most people just don't want to help anybody else. You guys should be proud of that and I only hope I may be able to contribute a little on here in the future. David, I looked at "Supporting Member" and saw it would give me access to a members-only area. Does that exist? Considering all the help and entertainment I've received from this forum, I'd gladly cough up some bucks with or without any extra benefits.

Can this (or is it already) be attached to the initial Forum signup page with a "check box" that has to be marked to complete the registration?

Here's a bump for the rejected. If I sent you a registration rejection email, I think the maybe you aren't a spam bot, but just didn't read the instructions on the registration form. Spam bot registrations don't get rejection emails, they just get rejected.

LOTS of generic answers today!
From the FIRST post:
If you get a rejection email or no response from the site within 48 hrs after trying to register then click this Contact Us link to get in touch and we'll get you registered.

OK, new guy opinion. No problem. It isn't about the money. No one who is trying to decide on the options in a 30K build kit should balk at a one dollar fee. On the other hand sometimes my paypal account doesn't work right so please don't make it the only way for me to prove I am not a Cylon (If you ***** us, do we not bleed?).
I did see where you banned a guy for two days for posting a for sale item in the 'wanted' section. I have noticed regional confusion over this in some newspapers. Some papers post 'want to sell' items under 'wanted.'
Also, I am not much of a blogger so I am struggling a bit with the site. I have some really basic questions that I am sure have been asked hundreds of times but I cannot locate what I am seeking. This would be simple questions like, "Which engine and why?" I am trying to avoid obvious redundancy so I will keep looking before asking my series of newbie questions.
Thanks for this site!

Greeting FFR fanatics! My very first post and I want to say Hi! I do not own a FFR ride (Yet) I am in search though. but straight to the point, I have always drooled over Billy Gibbon's (ZZ Top) 33 Ford Eliminator! So after a recent re-evaluation of my life's journey, a 33 Ford has been on the list. After searching, I found that FFR is the route I want to go. Sure I can build the entire car from the ground up, but i need to give my hands a break and just cruise. So, anyone out there considering in making the drastic decision to hand their pride and joy, or nearly an unfinished project, over to an enthusiast, please reach out. Looking forward to meeting you all here in the forum. Dave

Hello FFR! After years of keeping vehicles running and minor upgrades (<20 hour projects), I've gotten the bug to build new. The idea of an entirely clean workspace being filled with new and maybe donor parts is nice to consider. I have been reading forum posts and watching members' build videos and it was time to join in. Thanks in advance for advice, stories and pictures already shared here. I'll forward to the next steps...Kevin

Thanks for the introductions gents, looks like you all are getting good use of the forum! I had another signup today excited about building something NEW instead of resurrecting a pile of rust and wear. I'm a fan of that, having built 2 FFRs and a Rusto-mod Mustang. I much prefer driving my MKIII!
I'm chiming in once again because some folks are still putting extremely generic answers in the bio fields. "Retire Electric Engineer" and numbers in both the user name and email, email completely different than ID; People! These attributes will get your registration rejected.
Once again folks, thanks for signing up! Let us help you drive your dream car!

ADMIN EDIT: Gordon, the forum software has rules in place to put posts into moderation if they have links until you reach 10 posts. So although you are a long time member this post went to moderation due to the email link you included. I'm actually editing this in the moderation queue and have removed the email and phone info.
I've changed your status to full membership so you can edit your profile, use the galleries, etc. but try not to post links in your next 9 posts or they too will go into moderation.

Way to go Bob!
------------------
One of the very few low spots that comes with administrating the site is that every once in a while I reject a registration of someone who wants to join the site. PLEASE UNDERSTAND I don't do it to be vindictive! It's just that I HAVE to be as aggressive as I can to weed out the spammers. I'm noticing a huge bump in duplicate IP's with nonsense names and emails. And yes, I still get generic bio entries. But this IP matching is new and I'm having a tough time approving these. So please, if you are a member of a family using your own ID on the same computer as a family/friend. Use the referral box or note it in the bio!
I guess another way to put it is the admin is a bit of a dolt so be real explicit with the bio to convince him ;) to approve you!

ztoolman44, I HATE generic answers. I thorn in my side...
We haven't had a spammer in a long time, but we did get one today. Why? I let someone through who had a generic answer "My name is <whatever> and I'm here to learn". Seems kinda borderline, and I let them through. Luckily they didn't do anything that would be seen by others, but the system flagged their activity so I could nuke them.
Bottom line is this is an continuing, ongoing problem so to all you site newbies out there please follow the directions when registering! I hate to reject new members but will have to continue doing so.

:)
Thank you for this clarification. That explains quite a bit. I guess that I'll have to do a bit more posting.

Really glad you guys are on top of the rules. This community is much better run than previous forums I've been a part of. Thank you for keeping it classy ;-)

Folks, just throwing this out there once again...
BIO FIELD: entering "bio" or a variation of ": )" is too generic and will be - has been - rejected, even repeatedly. I don't want to know your bank info, just that your not a bot. I got a good one today. Two words. Future Builder. Tells me everything I need to know.

Thanks for spelling out the rules OP. I will mostly Lurk in the shadows for now, but I am buying a kit within a year, so I may be jumping out occasionally with some comments. Thanks for approving my registration.

Glad to do it! The hardest thing for new folks to do is is participate. I lurked for a long time too. As a matter of fact I lurked through the whole first generation forum before ffcobra.was born. And I lurked there for years before signing up. The biggest fear I had was of asking a "stupid" question and getting jumped on by a know-it-all. I can assure you that the fine folks here are not of that ilk. Start a thread in this forum, and my bet is you will welcomed with open arms and encouragement.

DO NOT use a business name as your ID or it will be rejected (unless you are a supporting vendor).
That's the question you need to answer. It is NOT an acceptable answer to the question.

It's about time for some kudos - because this is, by far, the best behaved forum I'm a member of - most have those know-it-all types that we all recognize. There used to be some of those here too, but luckily they all stepped over that line once too often and they're OUTTA HERE! :D
David and whoever else moderates does a great job - THANK YOU!

100% agree. While jnr on this site, I have been participating in vehicle forums for well over a decade. Moderators do an awesome job and keep this forum super enjoyable to be part of!

I must be missing something. I have signed up but dont see a way to make comments or post my GTM for sale. I dont even see a classified section.
What am I doing wrong or am I even signed in properly
