View Full Version : Zero Decibel Motorsports, Coolant Bracket Relocation Kit

Mechie3
11-27-2013, 09:58 AM
Sent my payment yesterday, I'm officially a FFR forum vendor. :D The name was chosen by my friends at Indiana Impreza as a bit of an inside joke between my hearing loss and the fact that my F500 is the most obnoxious sounding car at local autocross events and will make everyone else go deaf.

The first item I have available is a coolant tank relocation kit. The oil fill tube and cap will be available after Thanksgiving.

This kit allows you to relocate the factory coolant tank away from the frame rail so the cap can be removed for filling.

Fresh from the tumbler:

Top view of relocated tank:

Prototype mounted (kit ships with new stainless hardware, not shown in this picture)
http://i.imgur.com/SXLf1rO.jpg?1

The kit includes:

Laser cut aluminum bracket, hand deburred and tumbled
4 Stainless steel button head bolts
2 Stainless steel lock nuts
Coolant hose to connect to turbo line and hardline under manifold

Kit has been tested to work with both the plastic and metal versions of the tank and the factory aluminum intake manifold.

Note: due to the laser cutting process, the interior of some of the small bolt holes exhibits burn marks. These are hidden when the bracket is installed.

Cost: $45 + shipping (USPS flat rate or your Fedex/UPS acccount, will combine shipping)
Indiana residents get 5% discount, but must pay 7% sales tax
Free pickup in Indianapolis area

Lol. I outsourced manufacturing of these. Not worth risking my real job to make parts that might never make me enough to even buy one weeks worth of gas for my car.

My wife just resorts to revenge spending! I just mounted up my pedal box... so she has me get her an aluminum pedal set for her 135i. I show her the wheels I'm thinking about getting... next day I come home and she's on the Turner Motorsports website looking at new rims herself. I may be keeping my build on budget, but in my case, I have to include the jealousy factor. :(

My neighbors must think I sell drugs. People are always stopping over from the Suby club to borrow and return tools and buy parts from my donor. One guy comes in a bagged caddilac with 22's every couple weeks, the others more frequently. haha!

So are they thread milling both parts? If so then that means the clocking angle for all parts can be identical. That makes control of clocking on engraving possible. Any which way it will be a very cool part!

Thanks for making these parts available to us!

The tool the shop got couldn't cut deep enough. He got a milling thread cutter (supposed to have been delivered the 24) and will do the threads with that. I didn't want to bug him Christmas week so dont know if he's done them yet. Plan to call Monday morning.

For those of you waiting for the oil caps/tubes:

I stopped by the shop on Tuesday. He has the tool and plans to start cutting Monday. The shop is a small 1 guy shop with 1 cnc mill and 1 cnc lathe in the middle of a small warehouse complex filled with race shops (DSR, John Force, Beast) and he makes a lot of his money doing 1 off and 2 day turnaround jobs for them when they break stuff. They pay big bucks, so when he's waiting for a tool for a small job (like mine) he takes his setup apart so he can run the jobs for the race shops.

Material for the dipsticks was supposed to be ordered this week with production starting next week as well.

Another (lame) update: My parts are supposed to be done Thursday or Friday. We'll see. I'm currently shopping around for a new shop to get milled and turned parts made at in the future. The laser cutting shop is excellent, this shop....they haven't delivered me anything yet. I can't compete with the large race teams which demand 2 day turn arounds or they'll go somewhere else.

So since my engine/trans are now in the frame, I went to install the bracket and the air intake seems to be in the way of the tank now that it is repositioned, do I assume that I have to change out the air intake to a different setup anyway ? Also I have the metal tank, and at the bottom of the tank I have s support mount that went to the injector protector guards, I assume the tank will be fine with the single support now ?

Mechie3
08-18-2014, 12:21 PM
re: Intake
I don't have a stock intake and didn't think to test it with that setup. I'm not sure how many people are using the stock intake, but don't recall seeing any. My guess is that most are changing the intake as this is the first I've heard of this bracket having stock intake issues. How much is the interference? If it's slight I can try to make you a bracket that will work with the stock intake (free of charge).

re: Support
Yes, it will be fine. On my DD WRX I relocated the tank to the strut tower and mounted it using the same two mounting points only. In the 3 years I had it there I saw no ill effects to the structure of the tank. Prior to that I had removed the guards for 3 years and didn't use piece. Removing the guards (GBOD: green bracket of death) is common in the Subaru community.

FFRSpec72
08-18-2014, 03:05 PM
Here is a picture of the stock intake and the bracket, so you can see that it will interfere with the tank

32597

Mechie3
08-18-2014, 06:01 PM
Does the body of the tank hit or just the support that extends down? I cut my support off for a cleaner look. How much interference is there so I know how much to pull it back. I'll check in my basement for a stock I take to test with.

FFRSpec72
08-18-2014, 10:58 PM
So looks like it is just hitting the support that extends down, so if I cut that off I should be good to go, it is close to the tank body but should clear it.

Oil fill caps are here. I should still have 1 or 2 in stock. All of them come with a cap and tube.

I just got 10 more coolant brackets in stock. However, it's a new revision! It gives more clearance for the FPR line (one person noted on their car it was close and they wanted more clearance) and it gives more clearance for the stock intake. I'm not sure if you can get away without cutting off the mounting tab though. The design is slightly different as well. Instead of being swoopy, it's now more angular with a big "0" in the middle. Pics to follow.

Received my bracket this weekend and installed it yesterday. Looks great. I did end up having to cut off that support as you mentioned and still needed to add some spacers to move the coolant tank up to clear the intake tube. I probably could have cut off some more of the support leg and maybe cleared the intake that way instead, but was plenty happy with my alternative method. Thanks again! Great looking product and got it to me quickly.

I did not read through this thread thoroughly, I might be making a suggestion that's been made already.

After installing the bracket a couple of times to get things just right on my motor, I eventually filled the two tank holes, on the bracket, by welding. Then I taped them M8. It is so much easier to install and work with when you don't have to deal with the nuts on the underside. Less tools, less parts, easier.

Onto my suggestion; make the two holes for the tank, the tap drill size for M8. Then the buyer can either drill it out for what ever screw clearance they want, or tap it.

Maybe its not worth mentioning, maybe its the morning coffee talking, if nothing else this great little product gets a forum bump. :)

Question - I'm using a blouch 18g-xt turbo. Is the coolant line on this turbo different than stock? It seems like the coolant tank will be down hill from the current turbo coolant line. Recommendations?

I think you're routing it wrong. The bottom tank fitting goes under the intake manifold. The top large fitting goes to the turbo.

If anyone is uncomfortable with bending a straight piece of 1/2" heater hose to go from Mechie's tank to the barb on the pipe under the manifold (which may kink the hose), I found the perfect and cheap bent hose.
