View Full Version : Crate or turnkey engine

Whilst convincing myself I want to go down the Ford Coyote engine route, I think I have been convinced to go for a little more HP. So the plan now is to go for the Ford M-6007-Z427FRT or FFT crate engine. This is 535 HP.
Because of my lack of engine/clutch/transmission experience I was originally looking for a turnkey drop in ready to run complete engine. My question is... if I went for the above 427 engine what other components will I need? I know I need an Edelbrock 2924 intake and an MSD distributor. If anyone has used this engine would they be kind enough to tell me what else I need? I believe QSL has used it. I want to use TKO-600 transmission, although not sure what 5th ratio I need. There are so many variables with everything!
Thanks

If you want to go this route, give Mike Forte a call (a forum supporting vendor) and he will set you up with everything.

Agreed on calling Mike. He can give you info relating to an FFR. The more general suppliers will probably have info relating to a Mustang or hotrod or something. In general re; diff and trans gearing, w/ that much power, you can go pretty conservative. Probably a 308 rear gear and then talk w/ Mike about 1st and 5th ratios. Again, remember it's not about max performance like in a race car. IE, you might think about the tall 1st which would be common w/ a 355 gear. But w/ a 308, the short first will make it a little easier to get off the line in normal driving and you won't be able to come off the line at more than half throttle anyway so the ratio won't affect actual performance. 5th will be a choice too. W/ a lot of power maybe the tall 5th would be good but OTOH, I suspect that engine won't like rolling along at 1500 in 5th at 60 mph so the shorter 5th might be better.

Thanks Craig. I know nothing about ratios so that is useful info. I have sent Mike an email and I am waiting to hear.

Here's a good way to do your homework. This is the calculator I use to see the effect of different diff ratios, the different 5th gear ratios, etc.
http://www.tremec.com/calculadora.php
For my Mk4 build with a roughly 475 HP DART 347, picked the .82 5th gear TKO600 and 3.27 final drive. This gives me a decent first gear range, and 2450 rpm at 70 in 5th. Perhaps a touch high, but the .64 5th gear would have been just over 1900 at 70 in 5th with the 3.27. That was a little too low, in my opinion, and I never would have used 5th except at highway speeds because it's such a drop off. I wanted the 3.27 because the engine should be able to pull it without any issue, and I wanted a first gear that didn't run out in 50 feet. This is all theoretical because the build is still underway. But the calculator lets you make an informed decision, or at least analyze what others may recommend.
For my Mk3 build, which I've driven for two seasons now, have a pretty strong 306. It has a T5z with .63 5th and 3.55 final drive. In general, it's a pretty good setup. RPM at 70 is a little over 2,000. First gear is a little short, but it's a lively setup and probably about right. So the calculation confirmed a decent setup.
Good luck!

Great tool from Tremec. I plugged in TKO600 .64OD and 3.31rear ratio from the diff I got from Whitby. The Coyote will spin 7 grand all day so I was conservative at 5500rpm.
GULP....200mph!!!
Good thing radar detectors are legal in Alberta.

Thanks Mike. I have both quotes from you now. The 427 is definitely looking favourable! I now have $$ amounts for all the big items so I can place my kit order soon.
Edwardb - I looked at the Tremec calculator but not being very technical it doesn't mean a lot to me! At the time of ordering my engine I will speak to Mike for advice.
Cheers All.
