Do we need the security boxes for the ecu to function properly? And if so has anyone had success taking them out without a special star tool?

Keyless entry? I'm not sure what star tool you're referring to.

It's a torx tool with a dimple / depression at the end of the shaft. The fastener has a raised center so the torx teeth won't engage without that dimple. Not too hard to find the tools. Sorry, can't help regarding the security system.
