The rear view of the new Factory Five 818S frame.

A great car begins with a great chassis. For as much press as the new 818 has gotten in the last six months, very few people have seen the frame. We just got these photos back from our favorite photographer Dino Petrocelli who shot the 818R and 818S frames. Factory Fives are famous for their strong tubular steel spaceframes and the 818 carries that tradition forward. We’ve posted galleries for both models and you can click here (https://www.factoryfive.com/galleries/project-818/) to check them out.

The left front offset view of the 818S frame shows the intergrated hinged door bars (that are inside the composite doors), side impact, and complex construction.

The online photo galleries have about 15 images of each model chassis.

Frame it and hang it. That's a work of art!!!

That's the same reason I went with the roadster. The chassis is amazing!

Thanks Mad Dog,

WEK.

Is the R frame much stiffer than the S?

Incredible photos! This is the first time that I can plainly see the harness bar on the R version. I hope that it will be an option by the time I am ready to build.

DK, yes the R frame is more stout than the S frame. with added side door impact bracing, and forward frame structure support. all of our frames are designed using SolidWorks CAD software, so we can test the frames and adapt them for optimum results in the design phase.

Mad Dog, DOH! that's actually the back view. Hard to tell and it took me a second but when I saw the bolts on the shock cover I realized what it was! I changed it for you. Great pics!!!

Nice catch, Erik. It wasn't a mistake, I swear. I was doing it to test you.

818S doors:
Why do they not build overlap of the steel framing within the door over the tube chassis structure? In the even of a side impact, the tube chassis may do a good job, but the composite door skin won't do much to prevent the steel within the door from swinging into the cabin, possibly causing serious injury. On production cars, there is a lot of overlap of door over the unibody structure, and the strongest part of the door is in this overlap. The doors on a production car will therefore not fold into the cabin. The middle of the door will rather flex in and absorb energy like a trampoline. It seems to me to be a no brainer, but I looked at pics of other Factory 5 chassis, and they don't have overlap with any of the doors.

That R frame is like a safe baby cradle.

"What makes a Factory Five a Factory Five?"

Two words----The People. Dave Smith, Mark Smith, Sally Bean, Mark Lindsey, the owners/builders/customers etc. There are other companies out there but I haven't seen or heard of another group of owners/builders etc. like the group we have. I would say that any one of us could head cross-country and be anywhere in the US and in the event of a breakdown, get on-line and find more than one person willing to come help.

So, What makes a Factory Five a Factory Five? We do!

Are all the frames made with 1010 and 1020 steel? Is there any chrome moly used?

I'm still thinking an 818-R, with a GM Northstar V8 or a Supercharged Buick V6 sitting side saddle, would be one fun toy to build.
If you can stuff a SBC in a MK-4 with a ZF 6-Speed then why not a stick a saddle sitting Northstar or Buick in an 818.

Someone stuck a ferrari 458 motor in a BRZ. BRZ used to have a boxer motor. 818 has a boxer motor. If A-->B and B-->C, then A-->C. Someone should stick a Ferrari motor in an 818.

A bit of trivia, we had to perform a torsional test on the 818R chassis to pass local registration test
The R chassis tested at >17,000 Nm/degree twist, we needed 4,500 ;)
