View Full Version : Best configuration of gauges???

I've just started to look at the dash and gauge cluster set up. I mocked up the driver's side and if I sit in the seat and put the tilt wheel at the optimal setting for my long legs, I don't have a clear look at the gauge area. Raises the question of the best configuration of gauges so a quick glance through the steering wheel gives me the best look at the cars vitals. Before I go drilling, I thought I post this for ideas.
If you think about what's vital, for in town driving and most track work you really only need to see from about 8 o'clock to 2 o'clock on the Speedo. You really only need to see from 1 o'clock to about 4 o'clock on the tach (shifting range). The smaller gauges aren't really vital other than temp. I mocked up the face of the gauge pod and attached some pics to start the discussion. The best view of the vital areas of the key gauges is actually the one shown with the Speedo in the lower right and the Tach in the lower left, but this makes it difficult to read both at a glance - a vital requirement in high speed moments! Putting the Speedo and Tach in the center isn't a great view at all.
I appreciate anyone's thoughts.

I was planning on something similar to #1.
I'm trying to keep the gauges as similar to my Z06 as possible. The less I need to "relearn" the better. so oil pressure water temp on the left side, fuel and volt on the right.
Large gauges, speed on the right, tach on the left. just my opinion.

Hi Bubba,
I played around with different positions for the Gen-II Gauges for a while. Then I ran across a picture of another builders idea. Looked something like this...

I'm really not sure how close the lower center gauge would be to the steering column, but I think you could make it work. (If you like the configuration).

I decided to purchase a 4-in-1 guage in the same size as the FFR Gen II gauges. I like the symmetry, and IMHO gives a less cluttered look. Good view through the Momo steering wheel too.

That's pretty cool Michael. You're right, it does de-clutter the gauge panel.

Whatever layout you go with, make sure that you clear the steering column. I think you should make that cut and fit first (I can't remember what the manual says to do). I am not certain that the configuration that Stig showed above will work, the center lower gauge might not be far enough away from the column. Plus, pushing the tach and speedo out will probably put them in an obstructed view. Rum has got a nice layout - good idea going with the multi-gauge.

I also like Rumrunners setup. It saves space and the custom printed GTM number is a nice touch as well.
I went with this temporary setup.

I built a stand alone plate to hold the gauges, but the setup might work for the supplied mounting panel. I am very happy with the shift light. It makes it much easier to keep track of where in the rev band I am at a glance.
I have the gas gauge mounted off to the side. The consolidated cluster Rumrunner chose makes it much easier to add more gauges like the transaxle temp gauge I installed.

I found the view to be blocked by the wheel as well. My thought is to buy a larger diameter wheel, with a quick disconnect.
For now, I'm using the FFR supplied wheel with the following layout. The dash mount is nice, but it blocks quite a bit of view out
the window. My next thought is to purchase a pillar mount, and forget about the dash pod.

RumRunner-
Really like that 4 in 1 gauge cluster! I have looked into those as well, and I think they offer a nice alternative.
Thanks for showing what one looks like in your setup!

Michael, Where did you get the 4 in 1 gauge? Also who did the custom printing on the bezel? Thanks.

The damn "smart" board will not let me post all capitals!
That would be S then P then A!
What A PITA!

Roger,
I purchased it from SpeedHut. They make the Gen II gauges for FFR. You can customize the face of any of their gauges, so I gave mine my chassis number. I also had SpeedHut add turn and high beam indicators to the FFR-supplied speedo. Also makes for cleaner install.

Price has gone up. IIRC it used to be under $1000. $1400 is pretty steep.
