818S rear spoiler shape and look

look in the build threads, Erik has some pic's of one at the end of a real good build write up, lottsa pic's and detail. He has some none factory stuff on his 818, not sure if its a FFR spoiler or not but I like it.

I think someone said they were cutout and reglassed with the cf humps in place. But don't quote me.

Fiberglass engine cover, humps cut off with a 1" lip left, full CF humps made in the engine cover mold, CF humps bonded to the cover.

That's what I thought they did. That's how I would do it if I had the molds... Could make one at school next year though...

I hate to ask stupid questions, but --- Wouldn't it have been easier to just mask off the rest of the engine cover and then paint the humps black? What's the advantage to replacing the humps with carbon fiber?

Use cf for technical and marketing reason.
Technical: CF is stronger and lighter than fiberglass. It would be the composite of choice if it didn't cost more. All new airplanes and F1 cars are loaded with CF.
Marketing: Using real CF is perceived by the public as high tech. Using CF wrap might be thought of as cheap. Don't get caught giving your wife a cubic-zirconia engagement ring.

First is carbon fiber is a pain to lay up in big pieces, you have to make sure that first layer gets handled very carefully, tucked in the corners just so, no spots where you moved the weave with your fingers, and there is no gel coat to hide any mistakes. Second is they were showing what the 818S was going to weigh. It was obvious that the two humps in CF didn't save hardly any weight so the weight shown was attainable by the average builder.

I ordered the CF side skirts and diffuser, but went with the street splitter and spoiler (in fiber glass). I'll probably wrap those in c.f. to keep all the aero pieces similar. Some people have told me to wrap the humps as well. I may, if I decide it isn't too cheesy.

My takeaway on that, then, is that since the weight savings on the humps would be minimal, the real motivation in this particular circumstance was based on marketing concerns connected with the 818 Launch. That, and maybe it just seemed like a cool thing to do. There's really no other significant benefit to CF'ing the humps. That's not a criticism -- good marketing is important (and FFR is very good at that). But if anybody is hankering to imitate the blacked-out humps on their own 818 -- Just paint them -- or wrap them!!

I am a little disappointed in my Carbon Fiber Diffuser.
The top side is a beautiful glossy CF look. Problem is that 95% percent of this is hidden when mounted to the car. Only a strip will show on the back of the car.

I bought the diffuser for functional reasons (to suck down the back of the car at speed)
The bottom side of the diffuser (functional side) is very rough unfinished. To get the best air flow it needs to be smooth. I will have to put a skim coat on it and then paint it.

IS there an aluminum floor board for the back of the car like the front? If not you'll be able to see it from inside the engine compartment. :) I'm interested to see where it goes. I'll probably just lay down a resin coat on the unfinished side.

I was actually wondering (daydreaming) a week ago if the body molds could be used to lay CF instead of fiberglass. I'm sure it would double or triple the cost of the kit, but how cool would it be to have all the body panels in naked CF...
