Throughout the discussions, there has always been three colors that were going to be introduced; red, white, and blue. Where are the red and blue's? All I see being shipped is white.

It was stated that, for now, white would be the only gel coat offered. FFR is trying to get the thermoformed plastic panels into production. To that end, it doesn't make sense to waste resources offering fiberglass panels in different colors because they won't be sticking with fiberglass long term...

It is really exciting to watch the development of this car. My kit will not be shipped for 10 more months so I get to watch the car develop. The thermoformed red body panels, a top, windshield wipers, HVAC, etc., who knows where they will be in the development process 10 months from now. I can hardly wait to join the club of FFR owners.

I'm in the same boat. My ship date is 8 months from now. Even though I could of been one of the beta builders. I opted to wait and see what bugs could and are being worked out. Hopefully thermoformed panels will be available and the 6sp conversion will be done by then too.

6sp conversion?

Any updates on the thermoplastic panels from FFR? I am in the same boat as you with kit due in march 2014. Not long from now. I always wanted the red but the white seems to be growing on me with the contrasting vent panels. Not sure but maybe I am priming for what may only be available.

It is very interesting seeing things develop and there are some very creative owners!

I've heard the 6-speed may be unveiled at SEMA? And the thermoformed panels are taking longer than expected. I think I heard not before mid next year.

I was thinking along the same lines as you Xusia. It was only a matter of time for the 6sp and other options to appear. Since they are making significant headway on the r and the 6sp. It would only be logical to reveal it soon.

Anyone know the reason behind the plastic panels? Are they better, easier to make, stronger? Are they doing the whole body in plastic? Are the other kits in the FFR lineup also getting plastic bodies?

Thermo form is way out if ever guys

Fiberglass is a manual process. Thermoformed panels can be mostly made by machine. So in the long run, thermoformed panels would reduce the cost of a kit.

If the thermoformed panels really are "way out" there "if ever", then FFR should make a commitment NOW for a couple more colors in fiberglass. While I'm OK with it, not everyone wants a white car. Just my humble opinion..........:)

My assumptions are:
1. They aren't yet at the point where they know that - or - there are some things they are waiting on/trying before investing more in fiberglass
2. All available resources are probably being used to prep for SEMA, so I don't expect much from them until after

I think your assumptions are basically correct. They are not going to expand their fiberglass options while vigorously pursuing thermoplastics. And they are busy with other things right now anyways. My comment was based on Metalmaker's perspective that thermoplastics are something happening way down the road. If he's right -- then I think FFR needs build a couple more molds so they can add a color or two. If he's not - then status quo............:)

If you want a color other than white, there is always paint.

Right. I think we all know that! LOL However, one of key value propositions of the 818 relative to other kits is the "no paint" idea, which is predicated on the notion of more than one color being offered... :)

I understand that completely! I spent big $$$ to get the paint and body work done on my Cobra (er... Roadster) so the no paint is a serious factor (but I wanted white anyway!).

For the price sensitive, there is also the idea of wrapping the car. A lot of high end cars seem to be leading the charge in this department. It's also very resistant to rock chips and similar uncontrollable types of damage. It's about a fifth the price of paint if you do it yourself. I'm seriously considering this option and there's a lot of color choices between 3M, Scotch, Hexis, oracal, and yet another European company through one of our forum members here. But, for now, white is the only option unless you paint or wrap.

Paint vs. wrap vs. plasti-dip were discussed at length some time back. I like the idea of wrapping and plan to use wrap, but just on some parts. If the wheel I buy aren't black I'll probably plasti-dip them.
