Would this be an acceptable location to the heater core? It's right beside where the heater valve will be located plus one less hose to route from the front of the engine.

Tim,

That would be OK, it's the water passage between the two heads.

I was mainly concerned with the distance from the water pump. There may be less water flow being in the back of the engine. It would help with hose routing.

The distance from the pump is not really that much of a factor, the thermostat actually helps regulate the flow pressure of the cooling system.
The by-pass at the out let to the radiator also, to a small amount, controls the pressure variable, when the thermostat is closed. Think of it this way,
the pressure/flow is consistent within the system to a degree, otherwise, the front cylinders would be too cool, and the rears, too hot.

Makes sense.
Thanks.

Tim,

I also wanted to mention, that if you look at the head gasket for a small block, the reason that it has "Front" stamped into it,
is because the front cutouts for the water passages are smaller than the rear ones. Front to rear they get progressively large, just FYI.
