Did a little work on the windshield today. I decided to go this route. Are people mounting the bottom flange to the frame? I'm also considering a cut out for the clutch if I don't need to.

Did some more work today. Mounted the amp on a swing plate so could get to the gains when needed.

Probably some large tubage to the front and some electric fans. I doubt I'll ever do a heater since they draw a lot of amps. We'll see. Right now, it's just for show.

Hey dudes, I got the vents off of ebay. They're from an Audi TT! And yes Bob, due to the hole in my head, I forgot to drill the hole in the pedal! They work pretty well now. Amazing how much difference that made.

With a clear bubble canopy (low wing), I fry pretty quick sitting on the tarmack. Then, once in the air, it gets cold real quick so I shut it off.

I'll be putting the body on my car right after the HB show in two weeks. I'm looking for anyone to come out and help me shoot video so we can put all this great info from Wayne, Aloha, Frank, Erik etc on film to great increase the success of body installs for all builders. I did this with the doors on the 33 a while back and got some good input from builders. Pictures are word a thousand words but a video will save a million questions!Hey Erik, I'd love to be present to lend a hand or hold a camera when you mount the body. What's the schedule?

What a fun show yesterday at HB. Big thanks to Dave Smith, Sally and Ariana (Ariana was awsome sitting in on drums with the Nomads) Tony, Honey Badger, Deffenbach, the Wookie, Mesa Mike, Karen, and Jim! It's been a great year since the the last one thanks to Factory Five. And I appreciate the award. You guys have been a huge influence and it means a lot!

I dig the video with smoke coming off the front tires during braking and it looks like there's enough torque to spin the tires coming out of the turns! Awesome!

Regarding your battery boxes, did you build them before or after you received your batteries? Just curious if one can use the battery dimensions as gospel when designing the battery boxes or if one actually needs the batteries to do an accurate job.

Thanks,

Finally back in action after a surgery so I worked on the body all day Sunday. Brando came by and gave me a hand and brought his R with him! It's great to have a reference for the body work and fitment. Funny how my car is so much different since it's one of the first ones. We got the back deck done and I can't believe that after shortening the shifter arm, and grinding off part of the bracket the shifter still hits the back of the car. Something very wrong with that design but it appears they may have fixed it on Brando's car since our rear ends are the same design. The front was a lot of work with the headlights being aftermarket. Lots of cutting and dremeling there. Coming along though. Not to excited to get to the doors at it looks like they are kind of short in the door openings. We'll see. Everything is where the manual says it needs to be though so hopefully it will work out

Haha. Yes, and typically the hardest part of a build. These are already rolled so you can't really trim the front or back so I'm optimistic.

For you guys out there, I installed one of my favorite mods today thanks to Evan Siefke who is one of my 33 customers. He showed me these little guys in action at the HB show. At $25 a piece the are so worth it if you've ever used hood pins and looked around for an hour in your garage or someone else's garage for your cotter pins (Brando). Cleaner, easier, and quicker, I encourage this as invesment to all 818 builders. They are the Quik Latch Mini and can be found here:

an hour? I found them in 45 minutes flat

HAH, I always had a carabineer on my keychain and immediately snapped them in whenever I took them off my Vega, it also prevented me from driving off with them uninstalled because they were hard to miss when it was time to start the car.

These look great.

I have not gotten to the body stage yet, so could you tell me how many of these mini latches are needed for the entire build?

ehansen007
05-21-2014, 06:36 PM
I'm thinking 10 if you go by the manual although I'm going to try to hinge the front so I only need two there. So 8 for me. Here's the rear. I welded one nut into a spacer and welded that to the frame. Still need to paint.

I think my only problem will be guys that say "Hey, what's this button do?" ;)

Seriously though, now that I've got that cover down and secure the gap at the trunk at the rear is RIDICULOUS. I know most have had to fix this but man, I can't believe it's that huge. Must be 3/8-1/2" and that's with a 1/8 gap on the front edge! Question is, do I pull the top of the backend inward or fill it or cover it somehow with the spoiler?

Okay so I was just on with Treves and we brought up the idea of mounting the spoiler to the trunk and having the latch on the back side. Turns out this might work better for me as I'm not looking for as much spoiled air/downforce. It covers the gap and looks pretty good. I just flipped it over and it fits! Anyone else try this?

I had to slide the sides relative to each other as Wayne described. Then by making the trunk bow up (as Aloha818S did) I'm able to get consistent gaps. I noticed that one of your fenders isn't quite finished at the far rear end... how do you plan on repairing it? Since I want to attempt no paint I need to do a cobo epoxy fill with gel coat over it. You can't just build up gelcoat. Are you going to go with essentially no gaps on the fender to engine cover as shown?

Looking good- FYI- they do make elongated Mini Latch studs. They make them 4" long. For other builds, you may not need a spacer if you can find and buy them.

ehansen007

I worked on it a little more and widened the fenders a bit and got the gap a little smaller. As for the longer studs, yes that would be good however you still have that larger diameter hole in the bracket to deal with. This is more solid and welding is more funner!!

Lots of work on the body this holiday weekend. For the headlights and nose I managed to get everything lined up but the spyder lights took a lot more work. I used the "D" gasket to fill the lower gap and I like it. I took down most of the mold slag on the edges and at some points I was down to the fiberglass whic sucks but I'll patch it. I put the rear tunk hatch on as well which was sooouch easier than the. 33!! Still a huge gap at the back though. Still working on that. Looking pretty good and I'll be putting the quik latches on the trunk and then starting the doors.

And she's on the road! Or at least the street. I was a bit surprised at how much the ride height changed when I see her down. Hardly any weight in the back from the body but the front had the charger, lights, windshield frame etc and the shocks are pretty soft so I had to adjust the coil overs just to get it level

Hey Eric, I stumbled into these forums after googling for a platform for an electric car. I'm relieved to see that I won't be the guinea pig!

I understand you did something similar with a hot rod? Do you think it would be a practical daily driver?

Donnie, I may have inadvertently misled you. Eric built a very nice, "traditional" '33. His 818 is his 1st electric and is very cutting edge. The '33s I posted in your other thread were built by others...

Speedpacer, there has been at least one electric 33. It was in the FFR both at SEMA back in 2009. Was painted grey and looked awesome.

Okay David, I see. I thought the pictures you posted in the other thread were of his 33!

I googled it and it looks like AMP=D was involved with that project, but everything from them is dead since 2010 and I can't find out anything else about the car, except that they spent in the neighborhood of 250k to get the performance they wanted, which is slightly out of my price range. I probably wouldn't be worried about gas prices if I could spend 250k on a car.

I'll keep researching... thanks again!

Wow, it's been a crazy few weeks. I took my dad to Scotland last week and got back Friday. Played some amazing golf courses. Now I'm back trying to finish up the doors so I can get the hood and windshield in. I've got to have it ready by July 20 for the Refuel races at laguna seca. Can't wait.

Getting even closer! I still have not decided what to do on the hood. I want to block off that air intake for the radiator but I also want the hinge it there so it goes up and forward. Any ideas? I think a double hinge would work but I'll have to glass it in.

Did a full work weekend on the car to get the under-armor (aluminum) on the car. That is a task. A HUGE thanks to John Tongish for being there both days. Glen Zwicker came by as well. Quality guys both and love working on cars. I coated them with Evercoat undercoat like a lot of other parts. I also decided to see how the Dip would work on the humpty humps. It looks okay and a bit weird since it's so flat and textured and it feels cool. It does however love to attract dust!

I'm thinking 10 if you go by the manual although I'm going to try to hinge the front so I only need two there. So 8 for me. Here's the rear. I welded one nut into a spacer and welded that to the frame. Still need to paint.

Erik, any more info on this spacer material you used? OD? ID? I'm thinking I may take some 1/2" solid rod and just drill and tap for 1/4-20 to match the Quik Latch fastener.

ehansen007

That would work too. That steel can be tough but if you have the means it makes things easier. I can't remember the OD and ID. It's what I had in the garage and I'm pretty sure the ones I did in the back are different than the ones I did in the front!

Yes they will have 220 in the pits and the campgrounds. No supercharging yet though!!! :). I've taken the car out on a few midnight runs already and it's doing great.

Couple of things: Like Brando, I doesn't like to stay in 5th. To me it seems like the shift linkage does not allow for that long notch you feel when shifting into any gear. Is this a result of the play in the cables? Shifts are not confidence inspiring for sure.

Also, thanks for the design RPsepex

Those headlights look slick. They definitely make the car look more modern.

Do you have any drawings for your front hinge setup or did you just make them on the fly?

Your weld in spacer inspired me to come up with this low buck solution to quik latch pins being a bit short and unstable. It's a 1/2" bolt drilled and tapped to 1/4-20. I did everything on the lathe, but it could be done carefully on a drill press. A relieved tap is necessary to go the whole depth of the bolt.

The headlights are Spyder with the DRL LEDs built in but the headlights sit so low the DRLs couldn't be seen. Imagine my DOH! So I found these "switchback" LED strips and Ordered them from Ali express. It took a few weeks but I got them and just silicones them to the outside as a gasket and I have them on T connectors so I can disable them for brake and lamp inspection. My only regret is that I shroud have ordered the 90cm instead of the 60cm. Oh well!

I made the hinges on the fly all out of aluminum and it was a pain taking that hood on and off over and over!! :). Glad that's done.

Yes, I believe the mounts are 7075 for more support and I used 6061 for the brackets since they had to bend more. I used 1/2" OD 3/8" ID bronze bushings as well. To square it, I put a 3/8" rod through the body as a guide just as you did. The one thing I'm really pissed about is that as hard as I tried to get that front nose of the hood to match the line on the bumper, it still came out way off. That whole front end is way out of whack from the molds.

any input on 5th gear?

Aside from shift linkage issues I have been told it could be due to a few different things. Synchros, a mount or shifter bushing, or the nut on the end of the mainshaft has loosened up a bit.
I am opening up my trans and will let you know what was found. It won't be for a few weeks though.

EDIT: Most the people I have found with the same issue online were due to the mainshaft nut coming loose.

First of all, awesome!! The whole car came out prrty clean. Maybe you need a little work on the interior but that's it.

Erik, do you have final numbers on the weight of the car at each corner? you posted the weight pre-body. I'm just wondering how much the fiberglass stuff weighs. Is there any part that weighs enough to be made out of carbon fiber for a weight advantage?

Hey speedy, I'm about to do just that if I can get the scales from my friends today. I'm interested to find out as well.

Also I spoke to Jim Schenck yesterday about rear suspension setup and how the rear wheel sits so far back in the fender well. Basically the body is on and it's lined up per the manual so I couldn't have moved the body any further forward. When I look at the suspension setup I can see that the lower trailing arm is fixed and if I shorten the upper link to compensate I'm creating roll steer and also moving the upper later link closer to the spring where it will hit. It doesn't seem like it will work out. Anyone else have this issue? (probably, I've been too busy to read all the posts!) If so how did you fix it?

Yeah, I was afraid of that. What's crazy is that it's an issue with the Hot Rod too (with some people but not all). Check these pics out. The original SEMA car is a bit forward and then the candy red car is back in the well like ours. I'm considering pulling the bottom of the bumper out a bit and see if it helps. I don't like stressing the body like that though.

the lower trailing arm is fixed

What trailing arms are you using, OEM non-adjustable?

You are the first one I see this misalignment, I don't know if adjustable trailing arms can fix this. Usually if you change the length of one of these multiple arms we have there, it screws up adjustment and you have to move one or more of the others to balance everything out.

Okay, well, I know others as well as Dan Ruth who have worked to get the wheel centered in the fender well. It could just be a preference thing so I may be wrong. It may also be that without the fenders, it looks off but the fender doesn't follow the rear of the car all the way back. Not sure. I just know my was off at recommended setup and ride height.

As for the 818, I'm not the only one, we've got two others mentioned above including a FFR SEMA car that have the same issue. I don't want to buy adjustable trailing arms (if I don't have to) and moving the wheel forward may cause the upper transverse link to hit the springs. I may just need to work it around a little. That's typical with these cars and I was on the phone with FFR we walked through it and came to a similar conclusion. It's a beta kit so I'm okay with these issues. My point was to try and find out how others who have had this situation fixed it or overcame it. Thanks guys.

For clarity Mine on the full fender 33 was way off too and I had custom adjustable 4 links made to put it right. I have seen lots of pictures of completed cars that were obviously way off. I was hoping to discuss an updated 33 having that addressed. 33 MK2
On your 818 since it's a BETA, IF it is wrong they will likely improve the components, They do seem to listen to you and that's good for all of us.

I don't disagree with that. The question is "when did the beta production stop, giving place for real production kits?"

RM1SepEx
08-01-2014, 05:15 AM
I think the correct terminology is early kit, there were no 818 beta builds

Erik what is your serial #? mine is 17 and I'll be tweaking, mine look like your's. I think one issue is the 5/8 measurement for the sides/rear fenders. That measurement is made after riveting an aluminum panel over the frame. When you piece together 8 major 3D body panels to control gaps there is some variability that results, it doesn't take much for the gaps to look "off"

Look at the issues some are having in the front. Between rear bushing mounts that are off, early steering rack mounts being off center, any misalignment of the holes through the brackets can cause you to twist and distort the rubber bushings a bit. It all results in slightly differnt wheel positions.

I think that long term it is the nature of the beast. We would be well served however if FFR could give us some hard and fast measurements so that we could work them while building it up vs after everything is mounted and the body is on casuing us to redo everything.

I've done some browsing on the forum of other FFR models and every model has similar issues. So... many... variables... ;)

Yup and it looks good. You can see where the front fender is hanging over a bit in the front though. I felt those lines needed to be matched up and I could work with the back. But I'm finding I can't. It's minor though and I'm not complaining about it. Just trying to find a solution..

RM1: As for the beta reference, you're right; there technically were no betas but make no mistake, we were the betas guys. Maybe call us the "First Builders," I don't know...whatever works. I'm not sure of the first production run but I would have to say the first 30-50 were rolled out while changes were still be made as well as adjustments. Door panels, hood standoffs, poorly filled out fiberglass voids, etc. I was actually very surprised they didn't do betas on these cars and handed them to so many first time builders. It opened them up to a lot scrutiny and from a new demographic that's used to things happening much faster than their current customer base. Let's face it. Subaru guys are younger, more tech savy, and used to getting Amazon packages the day before they ordered it! So patience can be a tough virtue. And you my friend, got one of the roughest kits I've seen. These are the things beta builders deal with and that's okay. It's how apple does things when a new OS comes out because no one dev team can find all of these issues without building and deploying a large amount of products into the field and waiting to hear back... and burn money doing it. So, as I've written before, we are all part of the team, helping them build a new product so take pride in being a "first builder!" I know I do. By the way, I have kit 19E (for electric...NOT) Not sure what the e stands for. :)

Erik-

Do you have some closeup pics of the headlight and DRL strip? I'm curious how it's mounted and the level of finish you can obtain with something like this.

Is the LED strip mounted inside the bucket or is it sitting on the surface?

ehansen007
08-01-2014, 01:07 PM
It just sits on the surface of the headlight on the outside. They actually come with small clamps that you can screw in if you want to mount on the inside. I just figured it closed the gap nicely and filled two purposes.

you have to twist the bracket to make the hinge point vertical, I think there is a photo in my thread, our hinges are the same in theory, I used 1/8 steel, he used 1/4 aluminum (I think) we both used a small brass shoulder bushing

Thats almost exactly what i did and i wished i would have seen this beforehand. As RM said you have to twist the end as well to compensate for the head light bucket side angle. I also made the hole as far foward as possible so very little of the nose had to duck into the opening. Good luck !

RM1SepEx
08-06-2014, 09:56 AM
good point on the pivot hole location, it needs to be at the very front edge so that the hood pivots around the front edge as much as possible, that design has it so far back that it will bind the hood in the nose's fiberglass as it angles down. It would have been easier if the headlight bucket and hose had vertical edges...

Aero STI
08-06-2014, 09:08 PM
Thanks for the input guys. I added a second pivot hole for the bracket that will get epoxied to the hood. This design uses a pressed in bearing. I'm going to have my friend's machine shop cut and bend everything up. They can bend just about anything, but I'm not sure this will put in the twist.

I don't know what more I'm going to on the balance side of things to even it out but she feels so good on the street and track (with a bit of bumpsteer). Jim says it will only get better as you get it setup right. I tried to move the rear wheels a bit closer to the center of the wheel well, but the rear upper trailing link just wasn't able to give me much difference. The car is pretty sweet to drive around for sure and handles great. Now it's time to do more work on the interior and possibly some body work.

I was talking about cross weights being as close to 50/50 as possible. And for braking, the Lotus Elise that I race has 35/65 fr/rr bias and routinely outbrake everything with 205/50/16 fr and 225/45/17 rear tires.

Thanks Wayne, how would I change the cross weighting other than moving weight around? Suspension? And remember guys, I'm not sitting in the car either. So that's 185lbs not being accounted for. It would be even more off than that. Still it handles amazing and I'll continue to tune it after I get the important stuff done to make it street legal. Right now I've done a ton of research and can't find anything or anyone that knows what would cause reverse to completely disappear.

Changing ride height at each corner will change your cross weight. Must be done after your L-R and F-R distributions are tweaked to your likings.

Wouldn't that then change the L-R and F-R ratios you just setup?

In the past I've just had a shop setup the chassis for other vehicles, but I would like to take 'full ownership' so to speak. I'm curious about the complete setup order for alignment and the different balancing steps. It seems like adjustment of either will effect the other.

It wouldn't change the LR and FR ratios. Now I can't explain why that yet, as I am still learning. :) I'm sure some gurus can take over, otherwise once I find out, I'll let you know.

Once static weight percentages are set, work on cross-weight percentages.
You cannot change the left or rear percentages by jacking weight around in the car, although this will change cross-weight.
Changing the ride height at any corner will change the cross-weight percentage.
If you raise the ride height at a given corner (put a turn in or add a round of wedge), the weight on that corner will increase, as will the weight on the diagonally opposite corner. The other two corners will lose weight.
If you lower the ride height at a given corner, that corner will lose weight as will the diagonally opposite corner. The other two corners will gain weight. This will not change the left-side or rear weight percentages.
To add weight to a given corner, raise the ride height at that corner or lower the ride height at an adjacent corner. For example, if your initial setup is 52 percent cross-weight, and you want 50 percent cross-weight, lowering the right front or left rear corner will decrease cross-weight percentage. You could also raise the left front or right rear ride heights to do the same thing.

Thanks for the link. I've read it in the past but its always a good re-read.

It's easy enough to go with their experience, but I'm still curious as to why adjusting the spring seat at both left hand wheels would not change the right:left ratio.

How much would it actually tip the car? If you went nuts on the springs on one side, you might get it to roll by one degree. One degree moves the center of gravity .02 inches sideways for every inch the CG is above (or below) the roll axis. In the most extreme case I can imagine, the CG might be 10 inches above the roll axis, meaning the CG will move 0.2 inches. That will transfer 1.5% of the cars weight to one side, or about 27 pounds. To summarize, you'd need a really top-heavy car with a high CG, and you'd need to adjust the preload to the extreme of one side all the way up and the other side all the way down just to move 30 pounds.

Cross weight is a suspension setup measurement. Static weight distribution is what you guys keep thinking about.

Here's a quick run through on setting up.
1: set the tire pressures (on race cars set it to your hot pressures)
2: set front and rear ride height
3: check corner weights
4: adjust spring collars to get even cross weights
5: recheck ride height
6: align the car
7: recheck corner weights and adjust cross weights if necessary

Example
LF 375 RF 340
LR 610 RR 635
Now if you have exactly the same ride height side to side on the front and rear, then go tighter on the spring perches on the RF and LR evenly. The reason I go up is because the springs tend to settle. But if the LF is a little high, loosen that collar. After you adjust the collars, recheck ride height.

Static weight is the R vs L and F vs R. The only way to adjust those once the cross weight is set is to move stuff on the chassis.

Wayne, if you set cross weights with some ride height adjust and then check ride height, the ride height will obviously has changed and there is nothing you can do to adjust it again since it would change the crosses, no?

On most cars, you will need a suitable CTD to place in the seat to simulate your tail being in the seat. On these exact cars you sit so close to the F to R CG that it doesn't affect the cross much at all. I see as little as .1% with me in vs out.

True but typically you are talking about a 1/16" or less ride height difference side to side. I'll take that difference to get even cross weights every time.

Make sure you either have roll off pads to move the car off and on the scales after adjusting the springs or put two layers of trash bags between the tires and scales. Then push down on the front and rear of the car to even out the ride stance. The tires can get side loaded from jacking up and mess with your readings if you don't.

I think it's all fixable but I've got a bead on one for cheap and I haven't been able to locate the parts and I found some good size chunks of metal (you can see one of them inside the nut there. And yes it would it would not stay in 5th before but at least it went in reverse. I took it to cars and coffee (only to find out it was closed due to the concourse weekend in Monterey) and coming back I chirped it into 2nd and I think that sealed the deal for me. You can see where the shaft retainer partially broke on the case as well.

Well the tranny is back in and the car works great. Took it to cars and coffee where it had quite an audience. Most were just wondering what kind of car it was until they got closer and then realized it was electric. I spent the entire 3 hours answering questions. I eventually had to walk away! :). Got the stereo working and let me just say that if you put them in the lower quarters by the kick steps, cut your holes before installing the sheet metal. It's a tough angle. Yesterday I installed a plexiglass panel to show off the motor. Still not totally sold on it but what's done is done; and I won't have to take off the hatch as much. We put a lot of time into it so I don't mind showing it off a bit.

Yup, it's a torque damper. Ironically, this isn't where I need the dampening and it could make it too stiff. I think I need it more between the tranny and the motor at the adapter plate. When the the clutch gets let out, the forward momentum of the transmission wants to move the front of the tranny downward and I don't have a motor mount there like you guys do. I'll have to fab up a bumper or rubber mount like the rear of the tranny has.

Lee, my speakers are simply in the small trapezoidal area just like where Erik put his. They work okay and it's a good spot for them. It's a good spot for woofers and it's smart to put the tweeters up high. Mine are coax but have tweeters that can be pivoted upwards towards the drive which works well. They are polk audio. Don't have any pics right now.

So the last few weeks I've been working on getting the car street legal via the SB100 Process. The DMV is just the equalizer of all people in some weird way so it's been a pleasure standing in line even with an appointment lately as my local DMV has been closed for remodeling for almost 8 months now. Oh well. CHP and Brake and Lamp went well enough and it helps to know the process. Brandon got the wrong brake and lamp person (who told him he needed turn signal cancellers!) and so I'm sending him to my guy who doesn't care as long as the essentials work. And, I almost got the wrong CHP guy who wanted wipers and everything else that comes on a new car. Brandon sent me to his guy at another office and he mentioned wipers but said just be aware that you may get a fixit ticket but still passed me and gave me a VIN plate.

Anywho, I got the horn working relatively easily by just using a strip of brass that is bent and keeps contact with the ring on the NRG adapter. Works perfectly! I used a BadBoy horn which has a nice euro tone to it.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac177/ehansen007/818/818%20BUILD/FD272D5F-8DBE-4473-8AA5-4161CE7DC3DF_zpsy8ggnece.jpg (http://s897.photobucket.com/user/ehansen007/media/818/818%20BUILD/FD272D5F-8DBE-4473-8AA5-4161CE7DC3DF_zpsy8ggnece.jpg.html)

Now it's all about body work as I'm considering doing a wrap for the SEMA show. Wish me luck!

Also, some basic observations on driving the car now that I've got about 300 miles on it.

The car is so fun to drive. Handles like a cat and doesn't even feel corners. Range around my town is 50 miles since I have so many hills and I can't keep my foot out of it! It would be 70 easy if I lived in a flat town and drove it conservatively.

The mid section of the car is pretty low. I've had to raise the car as far as I can with the adjuster wrench (while holding the spring collar on the shock which can be tough when it gets tight) and put as much preload to keep it from bottoming out when I put it on the trailer or even take corners with passengers inside the car. The nose is just high enough to get on a trailer but looks kind of strange like it's much higher than the front of the car. The splitter helps with this but then you can't get the jack under the middle of the car to work on it. There is really only one spot to jack the car with even a low profile jack and that's the narrowest section of the body just behind the seat at the frame corner in the back. It would be nice if they could somehow raise the belt line of the car while lowering the fender line so you could still get a nice gap from tire to fender. It would be a lot of work but the middle of the car is just too low. The red show car height looks cool but really doesn't translate to the street as you'd most likely high side on any speed bump. I'd like to put the carbon side skirts on too but don't think I have the clearance. Maybe just for SEMA.

Also, the bump steer kit is a must. I've had the car at three different ride heights and it's pretty bad.

Getting in and out of the car is a challenge and really can't be done gracefully by those over 6ft. It's basically a tricep extension move to push yourself up and out of the car if you have a bucket seat.

Both my floors in the car are oil canned. This pisses me off. Do I really need to cut this out? How have you guys fixed this? I really don't want to have to weld anything but have considered cutting a slit down the middle and stitch welding to shrink it up. Not sure if it would work or not. Happy to hear other suggestions. That bong! you get each time you get in or out of the car is just ridiculous! :)

The windshield is pretty flimsy. They might want to make that a metal frame all the way around so people can use it to help get out of the car. Sure would help!

Also, those LED light strips I ordered from Ali Baba are not bright enough and can't be seen during the day. Considering another alternative.

That's all for now.

Yes, we do have regen setup for coasting however what I've noticed is that the car is so light that energy recovery is almost moot at 20% regen when going down large hills. It slows the car down more than it can for keeping up speed. What we're planning on doing is putting a switch in the brake line that will give feedback to the controller that will turn up regen based on braking pressure and work only when you're on the brakes. As well we are going put in a switch to turn regen on and off to test and see what the sweetspot is. We're also going to put in a clutch switch that will maintain motor RPM for a perfect shift ala rev matching. So that should be cool. As for the SB100 it's not JUST for California smog exemption. CARB is only part of it. Because this is a kit and has no actual VIN tag it also has to go to CHP and do brake and lamp inspection to get it registered. This is all part of the SB100.

wleehendrick
09-29-2014, 04:28 PM
Good luck setting up the adjustable regen, and getting ready for SEMA. Good to hear about the inspection, I was dreading dealing with the checklist that Brandon got! When the time comes, I may need your inspection contacts, if the local SD ones are sticklers.

From my online research (no personal experience, and could be wrong) I understood that it's possible to register a specialty constructed (i.e home-made or kit car) without SB100/SPCNS; that just gives you the desirable CARB exemption (although the other hoops still have to be jumped through). Since you have no emissions, avoiding it might make for less paperwork, but if you you already have your SPCNS, then it's probably easier to go that route, since everyone at the DMV is used to that process. It should make for a quick visit to the referee, though!

Erik, are you going to try to implement a blip-shift feature for downshifts like the manual 370Z and Stingray have, or just hold engine RPM until the clutch is let out? Those cars have accelerometers in the shift lever or linkage so the ECU knows what gear the tranny is going into. I expect you might skip shift quite a bit with the electric motor, so in order to properly rev match, you'll need to know which gear will be engaged to raise/lower RPM accordingly. Cool stuff... I'd love to see that working!

Hi Erik,
Be aware that you have a lot more inertia in your electric motor than the EJ has.
So rev matching is a good thing.
Shifting unmatched will put a big spike through the trans if you are using a big clutch.
Can you keep the clutch at OEM?

I assume that California requires all kit cars ("Specially Constructed Vehicle") to go through the same procedures for safety, frame and parts history, etc. My understanding is that SB100 allows you to elect to have the emissions year set to the year the car is built, the year of the engine, or 1960. Obviously, selecting 1960 gets the most favorable emissions treatment.

In other words, I'd expect that you have to jump through all the same hoops even when you are not participating in the SB100 program. SB100 just gives you options related to emissions.

I'm so glad Erik (and others) will be able to improve the odds of success for us So Cal residents when our time comes. Knowing WHO to talk to can be such a huge help.

Technically, SB100 allows you to chose emissions classification by body style or motor; if the chosen style doesn't resemble a production vehicle, 1960 is assigned by default. Without SB100, you have to meet current year standards (impossible). For an 818, chose body, so you get 1960 (Roadster builders get 1965); if you choose motor, you'll get the year of your donor motor (2002-2007) and have to maintain all the smog equipment and be subject to biannual inspections. In Erik's case, it's all academic since his emissions are zero!

This is why San Clemente is the place to go. But even more so, you need to find someone who has done it and is familiar with it. But, they have done a bunch of SB100s. Overall, I think it's easier to do it this way because there are fewer guidelines under the SB100 umbrella. My theory is that if you want to register it as a new car, they will be looking for all the items and safety that come with a new car. If you register as Special Construction, the laws are already set for kit cars and they are typically thought of being driven only so many miles per year, and the safety thing is not as stringent. Again, a theory. The last time I did this they had to send my documents to Sacramento for review, this time I got plates at the DMV. I was shockingly surprised. Again, it varies by person so it helps to ask if they have an SB100 specialist to help you. It's worth the wait. But be sure to get an appointment!!!

Okay, back on track. Lots of work on the interior. I should have ordered the carpet kit. I probably used $100 in carpet but two days of cutting and gluing and it's back breaking work. Lots of bars means lots of cutting. Orginally, I had the top of the firewall in leather but it looked out of place as the only piece covered with leather. Now it's onto the dash and door panels. Spent many days thinking about what I'm going to do here and I'm still not settled!

Also, I was lucky enough to be approached John aka "Sticky" of Sticky Fingers Design (check out his insane work at http://www.stickyfingersdesign.com/)at the Huntington Beach show that wanted to help with a wrap for the car. So, I've partnered with him to do the work and also I've partnered with 3M Graphic solutions to provide the wrap as well! http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Graphics/3Mgraphics/Applications/Series1080/

Congrats on the tags, Erik! First 818 plated in CA?

San Clemente's only 30 min north of me, so I'll probably make the drive up through Pendalton when it's my turn.

Did you tell them yours was electric? There is a field on their system that must say exempt, how did you get past that part?

Man, was that a Marathon! Getting the car ready for SEMA was as much work as I anticipated however much more stressful due to having it wrapped. I literally finished the car on Halloween Friday but had to pick up the mirrors from Sticky's on at 4 then race back home, load the car and take the kids out trick or treating right away. Then I was up at 4am the next morning to drive it to Vegas. You guys that have the FFR truck pick it up have it easy! :)

A huge thanks to Michael Bream and Matt Hauber (EV WEST) John Tongish, Glen Zwicker, Brandon Showalter, John Boley, Sticky (John), 3M, Tony Zullo, Dan Galoub, Dave Smith, and Sally Bean for helping me throughout this project. It's been amazing

Here are a few pics. I'm trying to figure out how to write about the last year or maybe even three years as part of a short story about Factory Five and this whole experience culminating with SEMA but I'll have to get back to that later. I'm trying to get back to life as normal after an exhausting journey.

As for the wrapping process, the car is not an easy one to wrap with all the recessed ducts and intakes. You need to make sure the body is still pretty good. I was glad that the majority of the panel main areas just needed a quick blocking. They were really flat. It was all the blown out edges and bad corners that needed work. I haven't seen the new bodies but I'm hearing they are much better in this area than the original 20 or so.

Ok that answers my question on your thread I posted 2sec before reading this. lolll

Awesome pix Eric, awesome... I don't like white, but that special pearl white effect is really unique. I think the black humps are a must to the look though. Keeping them white wouldn't be as good, to my opinion.

Yes, my only regret was that the original released car was in red then switched to white gel which was the color I wanted to do! Oh well. The monochrome is very popular right now and it looks great on this car. White also makes the car look larger IMO. Thanks for the kind words.

As for the wrap. It's hard to say if I would do it again. While it was an optimal situation for me and my sponsors, as a solid color, the wrap looks just as good however if you damage it during or after the application, you have to re-wrap the entire section which really sucks. With that said, I still wanted a matte color so that would be pretty much the same since you can't fix matte paint like cleared paint. The good news is it looks perfect and is much more uniform as a matte color which can be harder to spray evenly. :)

How's the range been? Is it set up now to use any of the rapid charging stations available?

ehansen007
12-02-2014, 11:14 AM
The LED strips are okay but in full sun light they aren't as strong as open LEDs. I got them from Ali Baba and they came out with longer ones right after I got mine.

BTW, For all of those out there with the stock headlights, I would HIGHLY consider upgrading to the aftermarket ones with projectors like Spyder. The reason is that the projectors and the high beams both have their own adjustments to help with the weird position the buckets put the headlights in.

As for the range, yes, I get around 50 around here with all the hills right now but I have yet to optimize and get the regen braking working which can help. And I can charge at the stations ever since I installed the J-1772 connector which is the standard for the 220 stations. As for the Tesla Rapid Charge, it won't work with my car. My car has an Elcon 5000 which is an onboard charger that is limited to taking 30A only and won't go over that for safety reasons.

Well, this 818E journey has come to a close. Like the Hot Rod, this car wasn't for sale but someone talked me out of it and was very convincing. This car has been my opus thus far and I couldn't be more proud and thankful of all the people who helped me out along the way. Because it was electric, I got to meet an entirely new segment/demographic during this project and some have become like family to me.

Coincidentally, when I finished the car and was driving it around, I thought that if I could sell it for a profit I probably would. I also thought if someone were to pay that much for it, it would have to be someone overseas,...somewhere like China,...where pollution is so bad and they are still struggling for independence. Well, in January, I got a call from a guy in China who wanted me to build him two so he could sell the idea of building a limited edition to the Government. He needed a prototype of some sort. Enter the 818e. I never would have believed and told myself I wouldn't believe it until it left my driveway on a truck and the money was in the bank. Well, that day was today.

I definitely have mixed emotions for sure. While it had a range limitation, wherever it went, it gained huge attention. It was smooth quiet and quick which made it great to cruise around. I did miss the engine noise and the vibration that's for sure so I'm not sure where that's going to lead me. Probably back to a 302 small block. We'll see.

I think my biggest regret is that I won't have anything to take to the HB show for the first time in 4 years. Maybe I'll ride my bike.

For now, the garage is empty....

for now.

Or put this little and light motor in something: http://store.evtv.me/proddetail.php?prod=UQM100

Or a 2,000 amp Zilla and a DC motor?

I think Erik's suffering V8 withdrawal symptoms, but I have a suggestion... do both! Since you've done a replica and an electric 818, stretch the budget/skillset and build a modern hypercar. A GTM with electric drive in front... homebrew P1/918/La Ferrari fighter!

(Yes, I realize the software integration challenge to make it drivable)

Congrats E! What's next?

not sure yet. Considering the 289. I don't plan on building another 818 for a while though. Fun car but I loves the classics.

Hi I'm in Australia,
Is there an easy way a novice like me could build an electric 818?
Also, I wasn't able to see any of your pics, is there another way form me to see what you did?
Cheers
Braden

Does anyone else know if there are other 818 Electrics built. Looking into EV West kit that appears to work for both for 818 and Karmann Ghias.

There's a Factory Five Roadster (Cobra) road racing in Vancouver Canada with a Tesla powertrain. Apparently it's awesome for 20 minutes. Except the races are 30 minutes. We are having a debate in our regional racing conference, the ICSCC, about electric powered race cars in our races. As of today they are not allowed. Obviously that will be changing.
