View Full Version : Dave Smith - 818 has been out a few months... so will we see a 289 roadster soon?

Dave - So, my build is winding down and lots of people (myself included) are asking what my next project will be. Well, like quite a few others hanging around here, I'd really like it to be a replica of the early version of the original cars - a 289 (preferably a slabside).

I remember there was talk a couple years ago about one, and even some pics of examples laying around the FFR shop, but I heard the project was shelved because of the 818. Well, now that the 818 is up and running, any chance we'll be seeing a 289 car sometime in the next year or so?

Pretty please, I have mine planned out as a really nice vintage racer.

Something like this...

Princess blue (I won't be so vain as to call it "viking"), small block with Webers, knock-offs, laid-back or no windscreen, and tons of relic'd patina.

Just a reminder...

"Nice work (and alot of it!). As some of you know, we have an FIA body currently mounted on a Mk4 chassis. The thinking was to launch the FIA and ultimately a slab side version this year (for the 50th anniv). To date the project has been at a standstill since the buy-out and 818 projects have been ongoing. It's something I've committed to but NEVER given a definite on the timeline. This may push me harder.. There is something fresh and appealing about a slab side with a 289 and wire wheels. Also, the Challenge Series racer would've been great to start with a true FIA body shape." - Dave Smith (in a 2/22/2012 post on the "first FFR slabside")

I'll have a very accurate 289 FIA on an FFR chassis in my garage soon.

This is true, but even if FFR does a FIA and/or a slab side it wouldn't be as accurate as yours. Can't wait to see it!

BTW Chris, you said you wanted a slabside, but posted an FIA?

Don't you mean something like this?:

I thought I read somewhere that FF purchased molds for this from some bruce guy just to find out he still kept the good molds to sell bodies around FF... I cant remember where I saw that and I may have some details wrong, but I seem to think that whole experience killed the project.

Yeah, roger that... like I said, preferably a slabside. But, my plan is to actually vintage race it - lots of guys seem to have no problem getting accepted to run other replica brands at the various vintage events in the Midwest, including the Brian Redman at Road America. Seems that an FIA is more likely, so I won't be choosy.

That pic is CSX2000 - the very first. Quite a few things, including the badge, didn't make it on the later cars.

Where's the autograph? Didn't he ever autograph his own car? Maybe he couldn't afford the "donation".

What amazed me when I saw that car at SEMA was how close the ropes, intended to keep people back from the car, are to the car.
