View Full Version : Any International Orders?
Been following the 818 for a while from Australia, was wondering if anyone outside of US has had an order shipped, or any information.
Whats the ETA on RHD version?

There is at least 1 person in Australia with a pre-order. I can't recall who at the moment, but I'm sure they'll chime in.
As for RHD, why??? <-- JUST KIDDING!!!! FFR will have one at SEMA. At least that's the word I've heard. :)
Oh, and WELCOME!!! :)

They're building one right now for the purpose of ironing out any RHD differences, and to include it in the build manual. It will be at SEMA. If you're serious, just call them. The waiting list extends to September next year, they will definitely have it all worked out by then.

There is an official dealer in Australia http://www.componentcars.com.au/
We have not sold one to Sweden yet, the first 3 cars coming to Europe are for the UK, The Netherlands and one for our shop.

Correct, they need to go to the ring, the Nurnburg Ring.

Hi CJ, I think we have exchanged a few emails on the 818 already but just to offer a little more info.
We have our first 818 leaving on the 20th of this month, should see it around the end of November.
I think there was a couple of Aus pre orders but I don't believe they have shipped. Not sure what FFR are doing on those but pretty sure ours is the first RHD 818 order.
It is an 'R' which will be built for display in our office. We're going to shoot for both road registration and CAMS approval on the R so we can do some targa events down the track.
Although Australia has many stringent engineering requirements to be met for any kit car or as they are called down here ICV's (individually Constructed Vehicle) we are not anticipating too many issues for registration once all of the required Engineering tests have been completed. These tests are ADR (Australian Design Rule) specific and must be overseen by an accredited Australian Engineer. FFR have tried in the past to assist us with this data but unfortunately the tests must be completed on an actual chassis to comply with ADR, and supporting photographic evidence is required in the report of the chassis being tested on an ADR approved test bed. It's all very interesting stuff but the cost of these tests are quite expensive.
Unfortunately your state, although a beautiful place to live, is a little antiquated when it comes to registering ICV's and the required stress testing levels. We have had to modify the standard FFR chassis for both the Mk4 and 33 just to satisfy the requirements for Queensland.
Either way as Dave H said above we are working with FFR to ensure all the compliance items are completed in Australia. We have decided to take pre orders for the RHD 818 however we don't expect these to be available until Feb/Mar 2014. Our goal is to get 818's being built in each state ASAP and work closely with these guys, so if your interested in one of the first 818 in OZ give me a call.

I am on the same path with trying for a street registered R in Qld
Torsional testing seems to be the major potential problem, especially if they insist on 6500Nm per degree as they do for the roadsters. Some other kits, such as locost and westfields are only tested to 2500.
Emission don't seem to be an issue provided it uses stock components.
We should share info, my kit is due early next year
Thanks for all the info guys. I'm glad to hear that a couple of Aussies are already making head way.
Tim what are your build plans and have you got a ruff budget?

My goal is a minimalist road registered 818R.
The donor I’m using is a 2006 WRX Clubsport 9, so its an EJ255.
I’m pretty much going to build the car as described in the build manual, keeping the entire engine and emissions standard until after its registered, then go to something like a MRT Stage 3 setup, aiming for about 300whp.
So far my only plans above a standard build (but with the full aero package) are to use the factory ABS, a lighter flywheel, aftermarket seats and a race logic traction control system. I’ll also buy a windshield as insurance, but I am going to try to register it with just the small deflector.
Including shipping, but also including selling the donor bits I’m expecting $20k plus or minus $2k
Cheers

I think we are doing similar builds but I'm coming up north of $30k by the time its on the road particularly looking to use a newer donor option. All enquires I've made for a 06/07 suggest I'll end up paying 6-7K for the required donor components but you seem to have a better grasp on this than I. Only really just started looking at donors so there could be a few dollars to be saved there.
So here's what I think an 818 will cost to bring down.
Current advertised exchange rate USD$1/AUD.90 however bank exchange rate is closer to 87c.
818R $11kUSD
Crate $700USD
So No optioned 818R RHD ex Wareham is AUD $13450.
Freight
Unfortunately you cant ship our kits for $3k, like you can an old Mustang. The crate fills 1/2 a 20ft container, which you can freight as an LCL, our last quote was $9k to Melbourne that's inclusive of road freight from Wareham To NY and held at Melbourne depot for client collection. That was as a part shipment with other freight. We go FCL no fridges sitting on top of our kits. Break down of 20ft FCL is about $1500USD internal freight to terminal and loading fees. About $4kUSD sea freight and about another $1500AUD to get it off the boat in Aus. Plus 10% GST on the lot. If you haven't imported before, are you in for a shock, there's the this fee, the that fee, its unbelievable!!! and if your really lucky like our most recent container, Customs will demand to Xray it which can take up to 2 weeks at $300 per day...(fark!!!) but I digress, as you can tell I'm still not quite over that!!
Anyway Freight AUD$7800
GST
10% on the AUD value of Goods and Freight
Base 818R Kit $13450
Freight $7800
Total $21250
10% $2125
$23,375
From there you would need to consider if you are going to insure the kit in transit with a one off marine policy costing around $400, and pick the crate up from the transport yard.
Engineers charges to assess and complete VSB14 and lodge with the Vehicle Safety Standards, our last cost $1100.
In Queensland as Tim has pointed out a 6500nm figure will ultimately require a minimum of 2 tests to be completed. I'm not an Engineer, but from the little experience I have had with torsion tests it's just not realistic to think that any "roofless" car will go North of 6000nm unless its been specifically designed to do so.
Each time it goes on the test bench will cost around $2000 by the time you've transported it to and from and modified the chassis for the actual report our Engineer charges 1/2 the cost of the test so another K. In my opinion Tim will spend $5k in a heartbeat to get an 818R certified for road use in Queensland and that's if you do the required fabrication yourself.
There will then be the pretty obvious ones like ADR lighting etc but nothing over the top. I agree with Tim that from there kit should be all go for full road registration even in the R version, but lets be honest Tim, surely you'd be taking up a few of those carbon fibre options?.
I'm not sure what happened but my $11kUSD turned into $14kUSD but it's a toy and I'm driving this one like I stole it. In a controlled environment obviously!!

Hi Chris
I think my answer to Cj before was a bit misleading ....:(. I have a lot of resources that keep my costs down, I guess everyone needs to work out their own budget considering their own situation.....
I got a great deal on donor, a 2006 wrx cs9 that was water damaged but every panel is straight, nice wheels, leather, etc cost was just over 5k but should easily recoup some decent $. It runs really well, having a ball fanging it around the property:cool:
I also bought $usd when I placed the preorder, the dollar has gone down ever since:(
I'm waiting to see what the standard $700 crate looks like, maybe I'll spend a bit extra so I can risk LCL. I have been quoted a lot less for LCL but it definitely is riskier. Saving on the freight also saves on the gst, so you save 110%:D
In the end it will cost what it costs, but you are right to warn others of the hidden things
In the end I'm in it for the fun of the build, and the drive, not the bargain.
Cheers
Tim

Chris,
This is exactly the breakdown I was after to help with budgeting.
