View Full Version : Is anything one time use only?

Within a week I'll be getting my chassis back, sand blasted and cleaned up ready for POR15. All my panels will be powdercoated, and in about 6-8 weeks I will get my roll bar back.

It means, I'll be at the point of putting stuff together and this thought horrifies me. I'm very reluctant to put loctite/silicon on anything until I *know* for certain that I've done it correctly. This got me to thinking about one time use things that I'll need to replace. I'm guessing things like gaskets/seals, maybe snap rings? will be one time use only.

Am I going to doing any damage or cost myself more money by not putting things together now with loctite/silicon etc?

Snap rings should be reusable unless they are damaged and some gaskets are reusable. The front and rear axle nuts I have seen are one time use only.

The first thing that come to mind is the axle nuts...

:)

PS Oops, Bill beat me to it.

Not going to start an argument, but that was so Ford could sell you a $15 nut!

Are they the ones that go to something like 225lb/ft of torque?

(I think my question just goes to show how little I know about this whole car building thing)

As reluctant as I am to talk about your nuts here goes.
yours are new and unused so you will be fine installing them on your rear.
I would suggest double nutting the rear axles as this is a common loose nut area.
The torque spec for your rear nuts is 250#.
torque your front spindle nuts to 230#

You can talk about my nuts anytime you like Mark. I'm sure you know what to do with them more than I do.

This is like the conversation going on in the coupe forum regarding MRSQSL asking the Bat a question.

Stovers, axle, spindle and any type of metal locking nuts are one time use - the metal locking 'cage' deforms when tightening and doesn't have the same grab a second time around

Nylocks can be reused a few times though. For one critical holdings I wouldn't have any qualms about reusing them several times, but for critical pieces (suspension) i always throw out after one use.

Thanks everyone.

Once I get everything back, I think I'll have to sit down and watch Dan Golubs videos and get to it.
