Took the car to have 4 wheel alingment, and shop noticed that the rear wheels had about
1 to 2 inches of end play. What would cause this?

Did you have the hub nuts torqued to 280 ft.lbs?

x2 what Gordon said.
Unless you have already put a bunch of miles on the Coupe without having them properly torqued, which could have wiped the bearings. If that's the case, then two new bearings are in your future, and make sure that the hub nuts are properly torqued after the new bearings are installed. Keep in mind 280 Foot Pounds is a LOT of torque!
However, check the torque of the hub nuts before you do anything too drastic!
