Going to look at a trans, guy says its good, but I am guessing there is no way to tell once its out of the car

You could pull off the cover and inspect the gears etc.. Move the shift forks between gears.

Agree but you have to pull the tail shaft and the top cover and then you really can't tell if there are issues beyond gear tooth issues w/o a full disassembly. If you have a local person that can check it out (most local labor costs are around $150 to tear down, inspect and fix, parts extra) and might be worth it. See if it has still has a tag on it and check the numbers to make sure you are getting what you want, you can usually tell if it has been a part before, so that may be something to look at. I would try to find one for between $100-150 and then have it torn down and overhauled.
