View Full Version : Well, I'm taking the plunge this next week. Going to purchase the base kit!

I was going to hold off on getting my kit until I sold my car (spring time), but I noticed the Summer sale for free 3 link and tubular front lower arms is for the base kit...how can I pass that up!! Unless they have better sales in the winter??
Its going to be hard to part with that kind of cash! I'm a rather large tightwad lol.

My question for you guys is, what can I expect to pay roughly for the shipping to Ohio? 500?

One other thing. Rack and pinion question. I can't seem to find an answer in previous posts. What is the benefit to running the 94-04 rack? I noticed it is an extra $140 option on the build sheet. Im planning on running power steering if that makes a difference.

My rough build plan is Coyote powered, tko600 mid shift, solid rear axle. I'd like to be able to run exhaust out the back, but not sure there is going to be room to do that. Im not giving up on it until im positive though!

Congratulations on the decision to join the club! FFR does have a Winter sale but not knowing what it will be makes the decision even harder. I would give Stewart a call and get a quote on shipping, it will probably be more than $500. There are several builders who have run the rear exaust, you may want to do a search and see how they did it.

Hi Will,

From one Will to another, welcome to the craziness of roadster building. If I were you I would estimate shipping at 1k and when you fine it is less you can feel good. If it is more than .5k and it probably is, you will feel bad. Go figure: same price but different outcome.

Unless things have changed and I don't think so, the rack does not come in the base kit so you supply that with the donor. I am a PS proponent so knowing the bias up front, you should do it. I enjoy being able to add lots of castor in the front but not have to fight it at parking lot speed.

Sounds like you have a good global plan but only one inconsistency: I don't think tightwad and Coyote go together very well! Good luck, WEK.

I'm sure you guys are right, the more I think about it, shipping has to be more around 1k. Bummer, but I want to be sure it arrives safe and in one piece. After spending all that money to get it, I would be devastated if it arrived damaged!

I know the rack doesn't come with the base kit, but under the options for the kit, it's an additional $140 just if you're going to be using the 94-04 rack. It is definitely getting power steering and vacuum power brakes! I know some say its not needed, but I enjoy having them. I plan on calling and talking to them before I place my order, just to talk to a live person before giving up that much cash lol.

I'll have to do some more hunting around on the exhaust, I've seen a few that have done it but was not sure if it was coyote powered or not.

I'll be sure and update once its ordered, then when the kit arrives, hopefully start a build thread. Albeit a very slow one most likely! I'm hoping for 2 years to driver status with body on, not painted.

Will, if you wait until every question is answered you'll die first, so place your order now while FFR has a great deal. The roadster I built was a very rewarding and fun project including the scary unknown parts, or perhaps because of them. You'll figure it out or get help from the guys here. For me the roadster build was so much fun that I'm doing it again with the arrival of my 818 kit tomorrow. Call FFR to iron out what you must, then place your order and join all of us happy lunatics.

Will-

Congratulations on your pending order. I placed my complete kit order a few weeks back, and I can't tell you how stoked I am. I went from an enthusiast, to outright crazy person overnight! -- OK, well there's lots of folks who already thought I was crazy, but that's another thread...

I am with AZ Pete on the don't wait part. I had a few open issues when I ordered my kit, and most of them were answered during the order process. I have had a few more creep up since then, and a few have been answered on the forum, and a few others remain open. I will get them answered either here, or when FFR calls to confirm the final specifics of my order.

Good luck with your build, and even better luck with your patience while you wait for her to be delivered; It is so freaking hard when you know it's ordered, and isn't here yet!! By the way, have you considered picking up the kit yourself? You can do it with a SUV/pick-up and a reasonably sized trailer. Then you get to make the trek to Mecca, and tour the Factory, take some cool pictures, and may even save a few dollars. Even if it's a wash, I think there's something cool about getting the kit yourself. My opinion only...

Congratulations and good luck!

Regards,

Steve

I think mine was around $800 from Stewart. Really can't go wrong there, great experience with them. Think PJDavis could tell you more about picking it up. Search for his thread here or in the other forum.

Congrats!
If you decide to use Stewart (and they provide a great service), you might want to think about other items you might purchase from FFR and add them to your base kit. Why? Because they will put them on the truck with your kit and you won't have to pay additional shipping for each of these items. When I got my base kit, I also bought the aluminum radiator, steering rack (manual), and complete bumper kit............saved quite a few dollars in shipping.

I built an under the car exhaust system for my MkIV using Spin Tech oval pipes and low profile muffler. Just do a search.

As much as I would love to go pick it up in person, I'm buried at work!! I guess I can't complain as it's making good money, lol. My parents who are retired volunteered to pick it up (Dad is a retired truck driver) but we would have to rent a truck as mom doesn't want to take the old f-150 with no a/c.

I went to call Stewart today, and found out they are closed Monday's... dang it!! I've been eyeballing a few extras and that definitely makes sense SCFFR. I've also looked into the oval exhaust, that definitely looks like a space saver.

What's the general wait time from order placed, to delivery? I'd like to have it before halloween! At least have a few weeks of warm open garage door weather to work on it.

Thanks, Will

Will

I would give both FFR and Stewart a call now and get an idea of what their manufacturing and delivery schedules are like. My base kit sat at FFR almost three weeks before Stewart was able to pick it up so it needs to be a coordinated effort. You have to place your order with FFR and get a build completion date and pass that information to Stewart.

As I read through your thread and got to your question of shipping cost I noticed one thing. Please put your location in your sig line so we know where you are. It's really helpful when trying to answer questions so you will get better feedback.
BTW, Welcome!!

Its official!! Placed my order this afternoon.

Quote from Stewart was $900. I'm going to call in the morning and let her know I ordered and give her the completion date.
Factory Five said estimated completion was Oct 5th. If I have to wait 5 weeks after that I'm going to go crazy!! I'm already getting antsy lol.

Apologies Craig, I wasn't even thinking about that! Added location to my profile.

So Will, if your location is Central Ohio, does that make it Hi? You know hi in the middle and an O on each end...

Sorry man, I just had to do it!

Welcome to the club and good luck with your build. Even more luck on your patience as you wait for her to get to you!

Steve

Order now with what you think you will need. If you add items later, it may cost you a bit more for shipping but you just can't plan everything when you are entering the great unknown. You'll likely find that some of the add ons are better and less expensive from some of the supporting vendors. Good luck!
