I'm getting ready to ship the G96 that came with this car to Eric for an inspection and I started to wonder if I should check to make sure there is no dark legal secrets this trans might be hiding. I will probably want to get this car registered in California one day and one thing the DMV is going to ask for is a receipt for the transaxle. I have the bill of sale from when I bought the package off eBay, and I have no reason to believe its stolen. But I don't want to start putting money into something that might not have a happy past.
There are 2 numbers on the trans. Is the g96001022841 is the serial number and the 2921010291 the VIN#?
Does anyone have any ideas how I could check to make sure this trans is legit?
Thanks
Steve

Steve,
I would contact the DMV and ask if they can do the usual checks on the serial number and VIN# that they do when registering a vehicle, even if they charge you for it, the piece of mind would be worth it and if the reply is in writing add it to the file with all of the receipts for when it comes time to register your car. Even the DMV would be hard pressed to argue with a written reply from their own department.

Thanks Mick,
I didn't know who did that check.

Years ago I registered a car in California and it was the CHP inspection station that check the numbers but things may have changed.

Absolutely correct. And they will not be nice about it...or at least they weren't with me.

They took my vehicle and I was not allowed to even see it until they ran their checks and put a VIN on it. Of course I told them where NOT to put the VIN as the sheet metal was not on it, and they put it RIGHT where I told them not to. I explained that not only did they put it in a place that would be covered up, but that the tube that they drilled into contained wiring and that they probably damaged it and the reply was, "That is not our problem. If you cover up the VIN and are pulled over, you could have your vehicle impounded until it is sorted out". They were total arses at the CHP. At least at the DMV they just didn't know anything and admitted to it, where as at the CHP they knew everything and no matter what I was wrong!

If it were me and I didn't know the history, I would take just the engine or just the trans down to the CHP and ask them to run the numbers. That way you don't risk losing anything other than those particular items. I don't think anything else is susceptible to being checked by the CHP for being stolen other than the engine and trans.

sk7500- You can try contacting the National Insurance crime bureau (NICB), www.nicb.com and maybe they can help. Another thing is maybe carfax. The best thing would be to have a friend in Law inforcement.
I was an insurance company fraud investigator and used NICB and Carfax all the time.
NICB is usually for law inforcement and insurance companies but they might help you.
If I was still on the job I could check it but retired 7 yrs ago and have lost my contacts.

Crash, sorry to hear about your bad experience with the CHP in San Diego. I have worked with both the Fresno and Madera offices and was quite happy with their attitude. They worked with me and the officer in Madera even wanted to go for a ride in the coupe I had taken in for inspection. Much like the DMV, every office is different.

I hear ya, and it's nothing personal. A bunch of the crew on the PDG GTM are LEO and CHP and they are great people, so, again, nothing personal, just pointing out a worst case scenario and how I would deal with it today, knowing what I know from previous experiences.

I liked the idea of going to the CHP better than the DMV and there is a CHP statins by my house so I stopped in on my way home and asked the questions. The officer said that they don't check the numbers on the engine or transmission when they attach a VIN plate. Doesn't sound right to me. Hope he's doing the inspections when I finally get to that point.
