View Full Version : Eliminating EGR Valve

I was thinking of eliminating the EGR valve on our basically stock 5.0L donor engine. The only change we are making is to replace the stock intake with the 1993 Cobra intake from Ford Racing.

Will eliminating the EGR system cause any driveability issues? I have read that doing this will cause the system to go into "Limp Home" mode. If so, is there a way around this?

I didn't have time to stop and educate myself on whether or not the EGR is essential. So I left it intact (had to replumb it on new Holly Systemax system). My long term plan was to eliminate components as I went forward. So far no luck. From what I've read since then is it has some value for reducing "pining" (NOx). I think it regulates cylinder temp a little. It should be closed at idle and it doesn't work at WOT (so shouldn't affect performance). However, in between it could have an effect on the drivability as I have read. I have not heard of a way to by pass it without cracking into the computer with a tweeker or other custom EM system to allow for the changes made by removing it. See below this may help explain better. Another possibility is to have your PCM reflashed to account for the change. I can't do that on my existing system (Mustang GT '92).

Good luck, WEK.

I have been running w/o EGR since 2005 on different engines and different ECUs and no issues. The latest being the Challenge Car upgrade to a TrickFLow top end, which we were provided a EGR removal spacer. I have never seen a 5.0 go into limp mode because of EGR being removed. Just do it !

It won't limp but will trigger the check engine light and set a couple of codes. More importantly if the computer doesn't see EGR function it will pull timing and add fuel, which protects the engine but is less than optimal performance wise. You can purchase the plug in eliminator for $20-$30 or make your own for a couple of bucks worth of resistors using this schematic.

I eliminated my 11 years ago. Seem to have made no difference.

Either build the thing above, or leave the sensor plugged in and block off valve, or turn it off in the computer. I recommend moates.net quarterhorse. You can tune it yourself, live (emulator) and do thing like turn off the egr. I actually wired my wideband into the egr input and he wrote a packet into tuner pro to log the wideband air fuel ratio in tuner pro data logging.
