View Full Version : Dash/console idea, anyone tried this?

I made a new dash for the coupe to try to better organize the gauges, switches and vents. It's 8" tall on the face, rather than the original(?) 7" dash. I'm thinking about putting a top lip on the console and riveting it to the bottom lip of the dash, then attaching the console to the tunnel with Dzus fasteners. I'm also considering "reversing" the angle of the console so it flares out slightly on the sides. Seems like this should stiffen the dash up some and make it look a little cleaner by covering more of the A/C plumbing (not original, I know).
Anyone else done something like this on theirs? If so, I'd appreciate some pictures and thoughts on how it worked out.

I did see your dash template and it looks like it has good potential. Most people won't notice that it is oversize (just and inch). There is a pretty extensive custom dash in another thread that is active right now. The husband and wife team are building the coupe for her. It is something you need to see. Sorry couldn't remember the title at this point. Maybe they will chime in. WEK.
Note: Found it. Casey Family Build Thread (coupe) in the Coupe forum.

Yeah, I've seen the Casey's build, and the dash is beautiful. I can't justify going anywhere near that far with this one, but I do think the console can use some improvement.

The lower corners of the stock dash get in the way on entry and exit. Usually stabbing you in the knee cap. Extending that down will make it worse. You should consider trimming it up higher in the corners.

I just had a look at the "demo" car on Russ Thompson's website. It looks like it is a little taller than "stock" as well. I think I may round the corners off like that one.

I also increased the size of the dash face to better accommodate my gauge layout; but also found it necessary to raise the dash so as not to decrease knee clearance.

Here are a few shots that I took of an original. This is the "Phil Spector" car that was lost for so long and found in a garage in a Los Angeles suburb.
