Do any of you have experience with compounds and techniques for polishing out scratches in the Lexan side windows? I did a google search and one boating forum recommended auto wax.

Hi Austexican

When I had my racecar, I used a product from Meguire's that was made for lexan and clear plastic - I can't remember the the part number (must be old age catching up with me) , but it did work pretty well on light scratches. If there are a lot of scratches, you may want to pick up one of the kits for polishing plastic headlights, most come with a foam pad that attaches to a drill - just remember to try it on a small spot first to see how well it works before doing the whole thing. Some of the waxes I tried dulled the lexan.

Thanks John

Thanks for the reply, John. I used to construct custom knives and I have a lot of experience with compounds for polishing wood and metal. Some of those compounds required a heavy duty nose and mouth filtration system. I never attempted polishing glass or lexan. I thought the guy with the auto wax solution wasn't really concerned with concours exhibition quality results. After all, if you are going to maintain your conveyance in pristine condition you wouldn't choose to drop that sucker in an ocean of salty water with the inevitable damage produced by corrosion, wave action, storm action, dock dings, sun exposure, etc.

what you need is a product from novus. Its designed to remove scratches from lexan. There are three stages so your final finish is like new. I use these products to keep mine looking good since the first time you drive with them, it seems that the first time you take out the car with new wings, they dont look as good anymore. If your really brave you can heat them up with a propane torch very carefully, that will do the trick too :)

Hi Austexican, what QSL said is a very good way to go. Also depends on how deep the scatches are. On my bug deflector on my truck, when I have deep scatches I wet sand them out with 600 grit, then use PlastX from Meguiar's, works great.

The Mequiar's PlastX works very well just by itself. I use it all the time on my bug deflector, headlight lens, tail light lens and all other clear smooth plastic stuff. Might have to do it a few times, and you have to really rub, but you have to do that pretty much with all polishes.

The Novus stuff is not cheap though, and not easy to find other then online. The Meguiar's PlastX you can get at Walmart, 10oz for about $5.97.

Either way would work great, just depends on how much money you want to spend.
