I know this has been discussed on the other forum, but thought I'd start a thread about it on The Factory Five Forum.

With the recent article in SEMA Magazine on "The California Kid," I took a look at my movie collection (it's always growing and lines the walls of a room in my house) and realized I don't have many car movies. Sure I own the Nick Cage "Gone in 60 Seconds" but have yet to pick-up the original (I know I should). I also have Bullitt and American Graffiti, and I guess you could call The Italian Job a car movie, but I only have the new version with Marky Mark, not the original. I also have the "Smokey and the Bandit" collection, and even though it's cheesy and over the top and quite possibly one of the lamest car movies ever, I do have Stallone's "Driven". Of course, "Days of Thunder" is in my collection as well. And I love Tarantino's "Death Proof". The second half of that movie has a really fun car chase in it.

I've looked at picking up "Grand Prix" but haven't pulled the trigger on that one quite yet. I was also looking at "Death Race 2000" the other day at Newbury Comics. "Cannonball Run" is also on my list of movies I'll be adding at some point.

What are some of the must have car movies in your opinion?

I would add a 1966 movie: "a Man and a Woman".
A "love story" movie, but the lead actor is a pilot for Ford (it a actually Jean-Louis Trintignant, the nephew of Maurice Trintignant) and there are some pretty nice scenes with a GT40, Ford F1 and mustang in WRC.
The wife will love the movie, you’ll have a blast watching the cars, everybody will be happy ☺

I have all three Transporter flicks, but haven't watched the third one yet. 1 was a lot of fun and 2 was ok, but felt like more of the same. I think that's why I bought 3 to complete the trilogy, but haven't been rushing to watch it. Keep the suggestions coming!

Most of my top movies such as Gumball Rally, Bulitt and The Italian Job have been named but there is one that is definately not a car movie but bears mentioning. The opening minutes of Beverly Hills Cop with the semi is pretty dang good. There was also an old movie 50s? that I believe was called "Thunder Road" and was based on moonshiners has some pretty good car stuff as well.

ASAIK it's not available but one I liked from the 80's was "King of the Mountain" with Harry Hamlin and Dennis Hopper.

Paul, Thunder Road was 1958 so good call! And while I've seen clips and some parodies of Beverly Hills Cop (a clip from Clerks The Animated Series comes to mind), I've never seen the actual movie.

TimC - When Dennis Hopper got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, I decided to add some of his flicks to my collection. I already had Easy Rider. Apocalypse Now, Hoosiers, and True Romance (his scene with Christopher Walken in that movie is amazing), so I picked up Blue Velvet, Speed, and Super Mario Bros. (corny, but that's why I bought it). I found King of the Mountain on Amazon. They list 4 used VHS' from $39.95...surprised it hasn't found it's way onto DVD.

"The Last Run" with George C. Scott. You really should hunt this one up for the BMW.

Cannonball run 1-2 (I didn't saw the 3 so I can't say)
Redline (2007) great road movie
And french peoples we also have Taxi (1 to 4) Don't compare with the US version with the Yellow Crown Vic original French version are the best, especialy the 2.
Can we say The Fast and The Furious collction as road movies? Thoses are most about car.
And the Fear of Speed. The story is so-so, but mix Cars and Nice girls (prono actress were used for this film) mix it with gun and you have what many guys ask for a good movie.

kpribble - I recently bought Vanishing Point. I heard that has a great car chase that is like, half the movie. I'll have to pop that in soon.

Pierre - Cannonball Run is another I need to see. And I have the first and fourth movies in the Fast and Furious franchise (the fourth movie was $9.99 on blu-ray on Black Friday 2009 so I bought it). Not sure about 2Fast2Furious or Tokyo Drift.

Found an old Hot Rod Magazine article that lists their Top 40 Car Movies of all time. A bunch have already been listed on here, but there's some that have not. Kind of surprised when I saw Goldfinger listed, but who doesn't love that Aston Martin and the Bond flicks always have fun chase scenes.

Click here to check out Hot Rod's Top 40 Car Movies (http://www.hotrod.com/thehistoryof/hdrp_0610_top_car_movies/index.html)

Speed Racer was fun (even though a lot of people I've spoken to don't seem to like it). Never really watched the cartoon so can't compare it, but I enjoyed the movie for what it was.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry has been added to the list. Another Peter Fonda flick I guess could be considered a car movie, even though it's a R.V., is Race with the Devil. Some interesting chase scenes in that one.

American Graffiti is a classic. I think I actually enjoyed the documentary on the making of the movie as much as I did the movie itself.

OK wait. I don't think this is supposed to be a list of every movie with a car in it. Unless, of course, you actually recommend Thelma an Louise as a CAR movie...

Just sayin'...

I am sure some of our FFR Female builders or Drivers do consider Thelma and Louise a Car movie.

they died in a car ... For the Love of God !

I would do the same thing in my FFR !

Wow, a lot to catch up on from the weekend. I was busy doing homework and my taxes (TurboTax made it fairly painless), so I didn't get to the forum and was a bit surprised when I saw all the additional titles. I'll go through them and add to the master list in the first post. Based on some of the comments, I may not include all suggestions.

Thelma and Louise is a tough one, but come on...Ferris Bueller isn't a traditional car movie but you do have the scene with the garage dudes jumping and driving the car along with a lesson in how to take miles off...it will remain off the list.

A bunch of the new suggestions have been added, but an interesting point has been brought up.

What exactly qualifies as a car movie? I mean if it's just a chase scene, then we have to add The Matrix Reloaded to the must see car movies, but I personally don't consider that a car movie (awesome scene though and I know that a lot more goes into defining a movie as a car movie). So in your opinions, what makes a car movie a car movie?

Check out Deuce of Spades. Not only is this a great car movie, its one of the spend stories of a movie even being made and making it to a dvd.

Ok, so I've updated the list. It's getting so long, I actually copied everything into a spreadsheet and alphabetized it to make getting rid of dupes easier. If we count all movies that have been named, we're at 112. That's a lot of movie watching to do.

I'm still curious what you guys think qualifies as a car movie. Like Gran Torino features the car, but the movie isn't about cars. So is it or isn't it a car movie? I say no, but curious what you guys think about movies like that.

It's that time of year...the summer movie season is officially upon us with the release of Thor (pretty good flick), but Fast Five was the warm up. I missed seeing it on opening weekend but checked it out yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm hoping to post a full review up on my blog (http://www.maddogreport.com) soon. Any one else make it to see Fast Five?

I saw it last Tuesday nite with a Cobra buddy.
Here's my review:

It won't win any awards, but it was ENTERTAINING.
I enjoyed it, but it's no chick flick. Leave the wife at home unless she's a gearhead or really likes Action movies. Lots of cool cars, lots of action, lots of car chases, lots of guns, lots of fighting, and a couple love stories (could have done without those!).

I liked it and I think Dan did too.
