View Full Version : 818 Shoulder Harness Attachment Point

Has the horizontal frame member directly beneath the 818S Roll Bar (at about shoulder height to the driver) been certified by FFR as suitable for use as a harness bar? Or can it be? I'm trying to figure out my seat belt options for my 818S, which is scheduled for production September 28. I would really rather not use the Subaru factory (or factory-style) 3-point belts.
Where were the shoulder belts for the Prototype 818R and 818S (the red car) attached for initial track testing?

That's a good question to ask! The square tube itself is, in most cases, too low. If the anchor point for the harness is below your shoulder, it'll result in spinal compression once it has tension on it, so you have to be very careful. The standard form for attaching the harness on the R will be through a 1" dia tube welded just above the square tube, on both sides of the car (see photos). If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to email tech@factoryfive.com or call 508-291-3443.

Jason,
Do you think this could be an add on option for the R and the S? I would prefer to have FFR powder coat my frame... But if I need to add this bar after the fact, I'll have to grind away and do touch ups... :-/
Thanks!

Hi Jerome,
It's not in the plans at this point, but if it became an option, I'd expect it would be a bolt-in part. I do agree it would be nice to have the option to run those harnesses.

Jason,
I have another question for you. Would it be possible to show us how the other harness points are secured? I'm mainly interested to see if there are pictures from the R's mounting locations.
Thanks!

A good rule of thumb for a 6 point.

Someone has a picture of it I'm sure, but on the FFR 818R there is an aluminum bar that it attached with Heims and bolts to the factory mounting holes then they have the harness bar wrapped around that.

I have my shoulder belts figured out. I'm more interested in the sub and lap belt mounting points.

Hi Jerome - Here are a couple of photos showing each harness mount point. One shows the lap harness mounts, and the other shows the shoulder harness mounts. The lower front harness typically gets bolted through the 1" tube in the chassis, or it could go through the floor with a washer, depending on what the seat position necessitates.
Take care,

I wish those were welded into the S frame...

Jason, just curious as to why this was not included or at least an option for the S. I hope you guys realize that a large portion of S owners will be tracking their cars.

There are two simple solutions, you can attach an 818R style harness bar on the S, grind some paint, notch a tube, weld, done. Or you can do what FFR did on their 818R and affix something like this (http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Plain-Tie-Rod-Drag-Link-Kit-with-5-8-Heim-Rod-Ends,3305.html).
