i am building an early cobra for a friend. im not too keen on the new stuff, mostly 60's and 70's muscle cars. i have an 89 mustang 5.0 for this car.my friend gave me a 2000 explorer intake and of course it is somewhat different from the 89. i have to bolt on the throttle body and after that i believe there should be an air flow meter which he gave me from an 04 ranger. here's what i dont know. what attaches to the throttle body and where does the air fuel meter go? also none of the connectors i have work with the meter. is there an adapter for this? the owner gave me a fram round filter that appears to be too big to fit tightly onto the throttle body if in fact thats where it goes. if anyone has any pics of this same setup it would help me out big time.

thank you,
barry

What you are describing is the mass air flow sensor or MAF. The '89 Mustang came with a MAF calibrated for 19 lb injectors and had a 4 pin connector the later model MAF sensors came with a 5 pin connector and I'm not sure about the calibration (injector size). You can wire the 4 pin early harness to a late model MAF connector http://www.summitracing.com/parts/scl-2901?seid=srese1&gclid=CJfhvfDJ-LgCFQya4AodNxMAow but you will probably find it cheaper to just get an early MAF meter as this is one of the first things Mustang owners upgrade so I'm sure there are a bunch sitting on garage shelves.

This is the typical stock MAF installation on a Mustang, it is located just behind the air filter box.

the picture tells the story. do you know if the pieces after the maf are used on these cobras or is there another setup designed for the air cleaner?

Barry,

Mike is steering you in the right direction. I have some pics of mine which is in a cobra and modified but still using some of the components you see on his pics. I have the stock flextube between the MAF and the throttle body. I have a small after market rubber adaptor and chrome tube in front of the MAF. It is important to get straight flowing air into and out of the MAF to allow an accurate reading, in other words, no turbulent air inside the MAF. That's why most people recommend a straight tube before and after the MAF app. 6 to 8 inches long. The other thing is to match your MAF with the right size injectors or you will never get the system to work right. The one you have is probably calibrated for 19 lbs. ones. There is a spacer that goes between the throttle body and the manifold to mount an EGR position sensor. If you don't use it, you could leave your PCM in "limp mode" so it would run rich and have retarded timing (crappy running). Just in case you hadn't seen that. Mike mentioned the adaptor that you can get if your wiring connector is not compatible with your MAF. You should probably use a conical filter like the one piced. Good luck, WEK.

I have a MkIII. I used a 92GT donor which has a EECIV PCM. I used the Summit EFI harness and a 90 mm MAF and 24 lb injectors. The stuff married up real nicely. That's the trick. You have to get everything compatible. Mine started up so quickly (couldn't even hear the starter turn) that it scared the cr** out of me at first start. Hope you have the same experience! Good luck, WEK.
