View Full Version : MK4 Cockpit Space

I've been doing a bit of research about a potential build (got the green light from the boss!) and came up with a possible roadblock before getting started...drivers cockpit size and pedal box space. I am 6'2" tall and a fairly muscular ~250# with size 13 shoes. I read a post that suggested over 5'11" would make entering and exiting the coup challenging and was wondering if I would "fit" in the roadster
I apologize if this is an "old" question that has been discussed previously, I couldn't find any info doing a forum search.
Any insight is greatly appreciated.

The two biggest helps here are the Kirkey seats, and drop the floor under your feet slightly. I am a similar size and weight to you (not sure I can claim all muscle tho) and I think I have plenty of room in my car.

I think you will find there are some guys your size that have roadsters. I am 6ft, 200lbs, and size 13s. I am still building, but the car is a roller, and I fit. It may depend on how you are built. You may have longer or shorter legs for your size than others. I drove a MKI, and was very concerned about foot space. There is WAAAYYYY more in a MKIV.
The best advice I can give you is to put your location in your profile. I would bet that there is roadster close to you and you can get your butt in the seat. There are a great bunch of guys here, and I am sure you will get an offer. If you are in north FL, you are welcome to come sit in mine. A coupe may be a little tougher, but you might get lucky. You could always do a Gurney bubble if you decide on a coupe.

Awesome, thanks for the insight guys!
Avalanche, thanks for the offer, unfortunately I'm a bit too far from FL to take you up on that, I'm in CO.

Our favorite wookie fits in his roadster, maybe David will chime in soon.

Looks like the best bet would be to check to see if there are any locals in the community that'll let someone sit in their seat...I got an e-mail from a member that said he didn't fit in the MK4 that he tried sitting in, understabably he said that made him very depressed.
Does anyone know if there are any dimensions for things like this listed, I was thinking pedal box width and height as well as maybe distance from pedals to base of the seat back.

The pedal box is pleanty high and wide, unless your feet are like Donald Duck's. (mine are close). 13s, but not wides.
There is some height adjustment you can do on the pedals. The critical measurement will be from pedal to seat. I can measure later fot the stock seats if no one else chimes in. Maybe Jethrow could do a Kirkey measurement and with a little math it could be converted to our archaic measurements. There are a couple minor tweaks that could help in the knee area. The steering wheel can be shimmed up a little as is. You could do quite a bit if needed by making spacer and adjusting the hole in the dash. You can also get a smaller steering wheel. One inch on the wheel give quite a bit more knee room.
There IS pleanty of headroom!!!!

Shadd,
I fit great in my Mark III, why not, I built it! There are tons of little of mods you can do to increase room in the driver seat. Also, I'm a big fan of the Wilwood pedal set up. I gained a ton of leg room by adjusting pedal travel and setting them as far as possible away from me. At 6' 245, I use standard Roadster seats, but Kirkey's will give you another 2 or so inches of leg room.
Also, check out this thread, 6'2" is nothing...
