I used the mini-quick latch from Speedway for my hood on my 33 FFR HR.
They look great and are only 1 1/4" in diameter. I plan on using them on my 818 as well. part # 910-07156. I used the mounting cup as well.

These were discussed in Wayne's build thread, 2 are included in the kit for the rear engine cover.

I'm leaning toward using AeroCatches, but haven't made a final decision yet. Some of the standard pins look like they could be too close to the edge of the panel for these to fit, so I need a bit more information before I commit. Of course, I have lots of time before I need to decide.

What is FFR provision for hood mounting? Four hood pins? Or do the hing in the rear and just use the pins to latch the front ? Any body have any pics of the mounting area where the pins mount and to the under side of the hood where the hole would be? Thx

Kalstar, can you provide a picture of your GTM-installed AeroCatches? I'm interested in these. They seem like they would look a lot tidier and more professional than standard hood pins.

I like the aerocatches but I don't want to have them everywhere... too many hood pins on the open house car...

I think so too. There's got to be a way to have the catches invisible on one end of each hood/engine cover/compartment cover. If not a hinge, something that mates to its adjacent component only from underneath. I guess that means there would still need to be some kind of mounting screws visible from the top, but it would still be better.

I agree. I'm hoping to get down to 4. 2 in the front and 2 in the rear, with the rest all hidden some how. I'd like to find a way to hinge the front, but if that is too hard, hidden pins or catches of some sort will work. Hidden pins for the front half of the back panel should be pretty straight forward as you can open the back, hinged, section to get to them.

Use something like this:
http://www.gcontrols.com/products/cable_latches_latch_products/latch_cable_systems_latch_products.html
Put one bracket in each far corner and put a spring under it. When you pull the lever, the pins release, the spring will lift it just enough to clear the pin but not enough to launch it.

Not sure if these are actual AreoCatches, but they at least look like them:

With the latch open:

I originally had them on my car (until the customs officers smashed them during inspection), but we replaced them with an electronic bear claw release and springs (thus allowing us to clean up and smooth out the exterior appearance), much like what Mechie was suggesting. It might add a bit more weight and complexity to the car, but depending on your goals, might very well be worth it (I know I really preferred the clean look).

I was exploring AeroCatch's website (and some of their dealers' sites) this afternoon. Did you know that these things are available in WHITE? How convenient is THAT?

I am surprised no one has brought up Dzus Fasteners. They have been around for a long time, easy to use, small in size. They have been used on airplanes and race cars for years.

OK -- Now I know what they are. Simple -- unobtrusive -- but a pretty small footprint. One would probably need some kind of a round cover plate underneath the fastener (like those used on conventional hood pins) to distribute the stress load. I think I still like the AeroCatch.....

I purchased another package to try on the 818, on my GTM they work and look great. Here is some pics installed and I opened the package to show some uninstalled looks.

I've used the Aerocatch on our race car, but they are kind of fragile. If the pins and everything aren't very precisely located, it's not hard for someone to hamfist the lever and break it right off.
LMP1 and Grand Am Daytona Prototype cars use Protex latches to secure the body panels. Probably couldn't incorporate those into the 818 without some (possibly substantial) bodywork changes. But they are well tested.

Dzus also makes a toggle latch assembly.

I'm not happy about it, but this is my temporary solution for the too-tall hood pin latches in back.
41530
Has anyone found a really good solution? Simply shortening the pins doesn't work for me because the fiberglass tangs the pins attach too are too flexy, and if the pins aren't aligned perfectly (and my sure aren't) they won't go through the holes. Instead they just move sideways when I try to secure the hood. I need them to be tall enough to get my fingers underneath the hood to guide them, but then they stick up way too far.

Wayne, you've come through again. I will be copying this in principle. But I don't want to add any more holes to my trunk lid, so it's going to have to go under the existing hole. Shouldn't be to tough, though (I hope).

I am using quarter turn fasteners on the engine cover. The trunk will be screwed on from underneath and the hood will use pins

I'm using something similar to Wayne but this is hung off the wing frame so also acts as a fender support along with a pin/latch mount

I didn't see any reason for the trunk section to come off easily so epoxied fasteners to it and will screw it down. There is nothing there that I need to get to in a hurry. I am not installing mesh over the rear openings so there is easy access.

I tried to use the quick latch's and was not happy with how they work so went with aerocatch's 4154341544
plan on similar to what wayne did for the trunk but waiting until the trunk is installed

I used the Mini latches on the whole R. They work great in the back, but I had issues with the front "popping" at over 110mph. I have since used hood pins on the front nose, and kept the Mini latches on the rear of the hood. It has been working good.
