View Full Version : Subaru wiring components needed for 818?

I finally have the entire wiring harness removed from my '02 WRX donor car. The thing weighs about 45 pounds and, I'm sure it contains lots of wiring, components and connectors that I don't need. What is the best way to remove parts of the harness and seal ends of wires? Also, I cannot recognize or identify the following components that I may not need:
silver box says "Caution high Temperature"
near the connector for right front door wiring under dash - small black box with no writing, "Relay 2m" and another little component, two relays one blue one black
component marked CRU unit assy.
mounted on driver's side kick panel "Integrated Unit"
I don't know if directions for minimizing the size of this formidable harness will be included in the 818 manual, or if most guys will just mount the whole thing.

The history of the roadster and how the marketplace will eventually respond tells me that dieted harnesses will be first, followed by a Painless or Ron Francis harness, then someone will figure out how to replicate just the engine harness and use a multiplex chassis harness separately.
Right now, there's just one or two on the road, and a body of information is yet to build up. As the first kits get built, the first answers will come out, likely in the next 6 months. (Flash build? It's not done yet? <---- Just kidding.)
Looking forward to the answers too, the 818 is the backup plan in recognition of the rule, Life Happens. Doesn't hurt to own a potential source, either.

I agree with tirod that vendors will appear as more 818s create a market for wiring systems but for now I plan on doing what the early roadster builders did:
Lay out the OE harness over the chassis and connect as much as possible and then hopefully start the engine, and then extend/shorten wires that serve other stuff like gauges, sensors, lights, etc. After connections are made and working is when the extra circuits can be trimmed out (dieted). This sounds easy but will be the toughest part of my build, even with the factory wiring diagram.

The wire diet will be the most time consuming aspect for me. I'm thankful that some have committed to detailed posts for this part of the build.
I've had cars were a fuse in a seemingly unrelated system of the car had blown and kept the engine from starting. Are there any systems in the Impreza that can't be bypassed?

I have a stand alone harness for the car, has a stand alone ECU and plugs into the engine connectors.

Wayne, GRM is also using Electromotive engine controls for their build too, correct? Is it your opinion that the donor harness is more trouble than its worth?

I agree with AZpete. That's the way I was planning on doing my build. Put the complete harness in, make sure everything work right that I need to work and then start to eliminate whatever's left.

Where do you get yours and how much was it?

Don't trash it. I got $1/lb or so at the scrap yard.

lol.. I actually used several connector and relay panels off it...there is some worth in it from a recycle perspective... the relays for example are $12 a piece and there are like 12 of those type relays in that harness.
