I know alot of parts are interchangable between alot of subarus over the years.
Has anyone looked into the newer 6 sp out of an outback or legacy? the final drive may be too low,. but thought this might be a viable alternative to a sti transmission, since it has a normal center diff.
also, could later engines be used if using a stand alon engine management system? I know alot of later cars have canbus, and immobilizers, and other items that may make it difficult to install due to all the wiring, ect.

The Legacy 6spds on the newer cars is a 6speed crammed into the existing 5 spd housing. There won't be much benefit if any.

no benifit as far as what? I was thinking for just having mre gears, not strength. I may do a NA build, so i thought more gears would be help.
Are people wanting the STI trans for strength or for 6 gears?

Strength. 5 Spds tend to break with higher power. 6 speeds are good up to 600whp+.

not all 6 spds are up to 600 hp.
the 10+ legacy chassis and now 2014 forester has a 6spd in the 5spd case.
i believe these are CLOSE to the same design, but i doubt someone has made a 2wd coupler for them.
also, the transfer case housing is slightly different due to the change in shift linkage to cable.

.
Correct. I mentioned that previously but was clarifying why people like the STI 6 speed asked in post 3.

OK, I was just wondering just in case I came across one at a good price

Some transmissions don't have the speedo gear and use the hub sensor for speed.

I figured if the speedo ever became an issue, I would just use one of the GPS based speedo's from speed hut or something

Speedo gear can be added fairly simply though
