I have made it a practice to remove the computer from the frame before MIG welding things to the frame. Is this an old wives tale or a legit practice?

It is a good practice to disconnect the the harness connector from the computer. Another good practice is to make sure to use the shortest possible ground path for the welder, whether mig, flux, stick or any other electric welding.

Nah, no need to disconnect the PCM at all guys. The only reason why its considered "good practice" is the guy who's working on your car can charge you more labor fees because things will take longer. So good practice, yea, for the welder and his wallet! :)

According to my teachers at my welding course, all you need to do is disconnect the battery.
