I am planning to become a distributor of this UK wrap company as they have some very cool metallic, matte and textured colors. They have the best of any company I have found and I have gone to SEMA every year for the past 4 years.
I need to order $500.00 in product to get started with the company so I figured "818 gets its color chosen early" I am between these three colors..... Aluminum Red, Anodized Blue and Aztec Bronze. Which one do you like for the 818? Pics to follow in the next 3 posts.

But I think a modern color would look good on the 818 so I'd go with the red.

For what its worth, in order of preference: red aluminum, anodized blue , then Aztec bronze. Each of these colors IMHO would look good on the 818 given the right interior to match.

Anodized blue my friend :D!

Depending on the color of the interior.....
For uniqueness, Aztek Bronze
Blue and red are 2nd and 3rd
Is the wrap going to have a company name incorporated into it? The Aztek with black lettering (2-3" letters) might go good.

So blue has the slight lead. Really conflicted between those two colors. If I go with the blue I can use the stock seats as they are black and blue. But eBay aftermarket sets are cheap so there is not a big savings.
Thanx for the answers so far, keep them coming.

Out of the three though, after looking at more pictures I'd have to go with the blue or the bronze. The Red Aluminum really ends up being kind of dull when you see pictures of it that arent altered. Heres a good one for the blue.
20093
Here is the red.

In the other red pictures you can see some HDR and highlights as well as most of those cars being under show room lighting which isn't very accurate.

I've seen the most of those blue cars, at least 2 live nearby, a Subaru and a BMW. I'd pick that red just because I've never seen it irl and I bet it looks better in person.

I have no intent at this point but Ill see how mine turns out. I also offered to do Chris as well as Joes 818 if they go that route. I wraped some things on the GTM and it was not that hard. Like I said if mine turns out good than I would be open to something. I would not be looking for cash to do it, maybe a trade of some parts or goodies in exchange for me wrapping the car.

LOL - I actually wasn't trying to be a smart @$$ (hey, there's a first time for everything!). It has been discussed enough, and the search function on the site doesn't work too well, so I thought I'd help you out. :)
I plan to wrap parts of my car & the dash. For me it comes down to not having the equipment & skill to paint, whereas I think I can do a decent job on the wrap. I considered Plasti-dip as well, but I think wrapping will work better for me.

Can you wrap the 818 with two different colors? Use blue as the primary color, bronze as the bold stripe or just a pin, and show some white gel coat too .... Just my .02, the red is my least favorite of the three choices.

i'll agree they can look good. BUT MAN have you ever tried to keep something like that clean? it's SOOOOOO difficult. and that's all I see when i look at satin or flat cars. that they are either NEVER driven as they should be. or have taken a WEEK to clean from an hour on the track/road.

I'm with you on not liking the flat finish. Is there wrap with a gloss finish?
Yes there are gloss, metallic flake, even pearlescent and candy coats. They also have brushed metal look (5 textures) as well as carbon fiber (in three different colors).
The metallic (even close up) looks just like paint. This company sells 22 shades of Metallic, 5 pearls and 10 candy colors. Dealer price ranges from about $380-$550 depending on which vinyl. The matte and metallic are the least expensive, pearl in the middle and candy at the top. Comes is rolls 5'x 66'. Half rolls are 5x30 and are $210-$320. This is straight dealer cost. I am not upcharging, I wanted a distributorship just so I could order my stuff, all their current resellers are in UK.
Truthfully I too am not 100% in the matte corner. I figured it was just a way to stand out and be a little different. If I do not like it, I will pull it off and go a different color. Lambo has been doing the matte from the factory for years, we will see how it looks.

Whew............ I thought that I was the only one not liking the flat colors. I just tried to be nicer in my comments to Kalstar. But, the reality of it is that it is his car, not mine. If he wants to wrap in in Goofy Grape with Yellow Stripes, more power to him. No offense Kal, I see cars all the time that I think look kinda funky. But, the owner thinks it is the bomb. So, wrap away. And like you said, if you don't like it, you can just pull it off and go another color. Oh, one other thing, you have an 818 and I don't. So what good is my comment other than to increase my post count. ;)

Kalstar
08-01-2013, 09:51 PM
It is easy to keep matte and satin vinyl looking great. It does not act like paint where it will flash, hard to match and a problem if cleaners/wax gets on the surface. Vinyl can be clean with rubbing alcohol (it is that stable). In more ways then one vinyl is superior to paint. Keep in mind the average quality paint job will start at 3K and go up from there, for a DIY, a wrap can be done for a ittle as $400.00 and look just as good as paint. The bread and butter of a paint job and how well it comes out is in the body/prep work, in ths case the 818 panels are near perfect. Seems the 818 is a perfect subject for vinyl wrap.

Would you wrap the panels separately then assemble, or assemble the body panels then wrap the car with the panels in place?

I would wrap the panels off the car then install. The good shops will remove what they can (like bumpers and doors) wrap and then reinstall. The 818 is unlike a production car where as the whole body can be removed, so for a skilled shop or with some practice the 818 "should" be a walk in the park. Other then the rear quarters/rockers, the panels are all pretty small with no complex curves (though the front bumper might be a challange) but even that looks much easier then many production bumpers that I have seen wrapped.
Another thing, 3 quarts of paint and 3 quarts of clear will weigh more then double what the installed vinyl will.

Count me in on this one. Another bad fad. Off center hats, strange finger gestures, butt crack showing, you know, a fad. I could see some nice graphics.
It looks good on a Rat rod, the unfinished look, but that is usually real primer. My neighbor has a $125k mercedes that is flat black wrap, I said why did you do it? He said to protect the paint. I thought that was the perfect, no sense answer.
He also wears his hat sideways, has strange finger gestures and acts like his is in his 20's, Oh and has one of those pencil beards !! Again , a fad or maybe I'm just too old "to get with the program" My first wife was Flat, I'm done with that.

I get that, and you're right that rat rods are the classic example of where a flat finish works, but personally I think the element that is required to make it work is that the car be "purposeful", i.e. racy, aggressive, etc., or bare bones, stripped down, etc. So, muscle cars, hot rods, imports that appear track worthy all qualify to me (not to mention the 818!)
The problem, just like any trend (which it surely is at this point) is that it gets abused and becomes over-done. So, yeah, as much as I like a flat black paint scheme, these luxury cars sporting it look just as silly to me as a grown man with a cocked hat and a pencil beard. haha. Then again, that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to to have their own and to build their car however makes them happy.
Back on topic, I'm getting more intrigued by the idea of going the vinyl route, specifically because of the cost and weight savings. I'm going to have to see a few wrapped cars in person though to get a better idea of the look and feel. I assume that a good 'paint-like' wrap job doesn't feel like the side of the radio station van parked outside the bar, lol.

Last night I was driving home next to a CLS AMG wrapped in flat black. It could have looked good if he had stopped there, but no, it had orange rims, with a 'roll call' of mods on the front fender (all in orange) with more orange decals on the rear window:confused:. At least it can all be peeled off someday.
I was thinking of a flat wrap for my 818, and may down the road, but the white with carbon fiber and black accents looks so damn good, and requires little additional effort, so that's my plan.

When I was in HS these were a fad among some of the cool, tough kids. They were often referred to as ***** beards. They typically went along with brightly colored gym shorts, a head band, and white K Swiss shoes.
There was an indycar this year wrapped in super bright metallic blue vinyl for qualifying. They took it off for the race because they found they were losing 2-3mph top end from the drag it created. Granted, drag at 225mph is a little different than at 65. :D

That looks promising! I wonder how easy it is to wrap the interior parts and how high the finish quality is. I'll try to see more pix of that, but if the finish quality is there, that is exactly what I want, cuz I was planning on wrapping most of the interior in suede (or anything else I'd like too) but didn't know yet exactly what to use. Here's a great option.
Of course the body can be wrapped too and I start to think it might be a great idea instead of keeping a gel color from FFR (other than white as I don't want it white).

They say that to cover their butt. Basically the are assuming AZ/FL/TX direct sun, with no garage. Even if it only last 5 years, that is more then I plan to keep any color. 8 hrs every 5 years is a good trade off.

I am interested in a few color samples. Let me know when you get started and then if they have any kind of sample pack to buy. 3"x5" or so would be great. The metallic blue looks nice, but blues are tough in that they can go from great to meh with just a subtle shift. I'd have to see it in hand first. I still haven't ruled out painting, but these look very promising.
