Rather than hijack Erik's build thread, I thought I'd pull this topic out.
Our esteemed administrator, Dave, has suggested he can increase the size of pics allowed on the forum. I think that would be great!
Another option I'll thrown out (we don't have to use just ONE solution!!) is my personal server. I've got several terabytes of storage, so I think we'd be good for short term stuff (e.g. old content be deleted after some period of time). The only real problem for all of you would be that access is via ftp only. Just an idea; just trying to be helpful.

My preference would be on the server, stored here. Nothing I hate more than finding an old thread with information I need (a lot of times pictures of examples) and the link to the picture being dead. With it being stored on the forum, it will always be here. :) Space is cheap. No reason to limit it here to something small.

My thought was more that people who wanted REALLY high resolution pictures could post them for others to download because the forum was unlikely to support resolutions as high as it sounded like people wanted.
Space IS cheap. Especially when you aren't paying for it! <-- bit 'o humor there. :) But on a serious note, consumer drives are fairly inexpensive for the space (hence the reason I have 6TBs of it!), but enterprise level storage - which is most CERTAINLY what is being used to support this site - is a whole different ball game. Depending on the specifics of the solution, multiply the cost you have in your mind by somewhere between 3 and 10 times. Not so cheap any more.
BTW, this isn't coming out my proverbial butt. I do corporate IT for a living and deal with this kind of stuff every day (yet another reason why I have a dedicated server at home with a lot of storage).

Most web software that I use these days handle the resizing for you. When a user uploads an image, it creates a few different display sizes. When the image is embedded, a link is automatically created that when clicked, the image is displayed in a popup along with the various different viewing sizes -- including fullscreen. Does this forum software allow that?

I have been using photobucket for years and have TONS of pics on it. All very large. As long as you create a gallery, and don't move the pics, which will break the imbedded photos, it has served me well on all my other forums

One thing to remember is there are 10 types of hard disks. Those that have failed and those that haven't failed YET!

I believe that was part of the joke... 10 (binary) = 2 (base ten).

Oh, so do I! I was really just acknowledging the joke. :)

It most certainly was!

Space becomes more expensive when you add in redundancy and increased backup time and storage requirements.
I think it would be great if Dave increases the max size here to as big as they're willing to support. Anyone that is nice enough to provide their photos for easy display/download in larger sizes can just provide a link to wherever the gallery is located. It is great that this forum supports copying a remote image to a locally hosted version so that links don't become broken in the future.
