I have read some older posts by Dave here on the forum with regards to the high mileage 818's coming in the future.
I had a question regarding those options. I have a order in for an 818, and already have a WRX donor - However, is the current chassis going to have the ability in the future to accept a TDI engine (upgrades/additional parts to order), or is this going to be an all new chassis design?
With the power being seen out of the CR 2.0 TDI's, as well as the older VW TDI's - It's something I'm really interested in building.

I don't know for sure, but I would think the chassis has to be built to accept the engine because mount points, etc., would be different. Since they've only mentioned the possibility of the TDI (along with some other options) it doesn't sound like those decisions have been made, and therefore I doubt the current chassis has provisions to mount those other engines.

Build the 818 with the WRX donor. If FFR comes out with a TDI version you can decide if you want to sell the WRX 818. The second kit will undoubtedly be much better because you will have learned a lot in the process of building your first one.

Fitting a TDI (inline, longitudal 4 cylinder) into the space designed for a boxer 4 would certainly be a pretty big challenge. Probably require a lot of fab work to fit properly. If you're set on that path, another option might be sourcing a Subaru Boxer Diesel (EE20) Not sure if that would fit either, but at least it's the same layout. And it would definitely be expensive, ie a lot more $ than a JDM STi motor. But still an interesting option for sure! This place sells them. http://boxeer.com/ee20_parts <-- Found on the web, not an endorsement of any kind! Would be cool to see a Diesel 818 eventually for sure!

Would it end up looking like a 818 station wagon?

Hah, meant to say longitudinal or transverse...they're pretty compact motors and drivetrains, but yeah could definitely be some "styling aberrations" trying to stuff it in there.

I am building the WRX 818 for sure, already have everything we need for it and a pretty early order. I am interested in possibly building a second 818 though, as a TDI. :) TDI w/ DSG would be even more awesome.

Sounds like the motor drops right in FYI... Cool vid of the owner of that site running Pike's Peak. 200 HP / 300 ft-lbs are some good numbers from a 2.0L diesel. I'm sure an 818 would move just fine w/ that motor.

a vw TDI would be a totally differnt layout. first in stead of a long narrow trasmission, you have a fat wide one. Second is th height, as the tdi is tall, verse the flat boxter layout.
Now, if you mates a TDI to a subaru tranmission, you still would have the height issue, and the longer engine protruding into the gas tank, or even tha cabin.
There is a guy selling kits cars that use a VW tdi jetta as a donar, so that may be a better option

Yeah, that is Dave's brother I believe.. Completely different car (uses the majority of the frame from a TDI/VR6/1.8T Jetta). Interesting, but I like the 818. :)

So you know. Subaru has their own turbo direct injected diesel..... Ee20 engine code. Same bellhousing and engine mounts as the ej engines.

It's a kit car... cut off the motor mounts, install the transverse TDI... make custom axles... VW inners, subaru outers...

One could always wait until FFR actually supports the TDI platform...
You could have a lot of fun driving your first 818 in the mean time!

Why not just put the Subaru diesel in one?
There was a swapped GC at the PPIHC that FLEW up the hill in a cloud of black smoke, it was awesome.

Cost/Availability (replacements, etc).. Subaru diesel is (relatively) expensive. I can source VW TDI's all day long for cheap.

True. Depends how close to Canadia you are too.
If they do end up making a FWD donor version I know I'll take half a dozen personally. K-swaps all day long!

I took a couple of pictures of the Subaru diesel while I was at PPIHC

Lots of responses to that..
1) 163whp (184bhp) / 295lb-ft (333lb-ft crank) Stage 2 Tune
2) Mileage, with a very quick car for the weight/hp/tq.
3) Why Not?

Personally, if TDI imprezzas were a common donor option in the US, I would have definitely considered that! Outside of that, it's just too expensive for my build budget to source the parts and tune. I even looked into it as an option considering the high mpg GTM build in Philly. But given the 818 design, it would involve a lot of fabrication to do anything other than a subie TDI, and bring up weight balance issues with another, say VW tdi (assuming transverse). The front hardware may even allow to implement a hybrid electric front drive build for a super high mpg build. All that said, for those who like to tinker, I'll follow your work with interest. :)
