Hello All,

My name is Darren and I work at Grassroots Motorsports magazine. We recently received our 818 kit:

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/media/img/projectcars/981615_10151827548433140_1999473861_o.jpg

We sent a build team to Wayne Presley's shop, Very Cool Parts in Alabama. Wayne has been kind enough to allow us to build the car at his shop, and of course help us out along the way. Both the donor car and 818 have arrived, and the team is supposed to commence work today. I will keep this thread updated with pictures and hopefully video throughout the process as I receive them. Any questions, please let me know. We are really looking forward to building an 818, especially after seeing the two of them at UTCC last week!

In the meantime, here is the 818 project car page until updates begin:

Really excited to get to see you guys get going on this build. Should be an interesting perspective based on your involvement so early on.

What's the build schedule like? I imagine it'll come together pretty quick if you've got multiple people working on it 8+ hrs/day.

Thanks David, we're glad to be here and are really excited about the project!

Thanks for your enthusiasm guys. Build schedule is planned out as a total of 6 full days as we stand now. We will see how that plays out. We will have a trip this week then another in the very near future. Basically the game plan is essentials. Our time in Alabama will be spent making a full out drivable 818 that will need a fair amount of sorting, which is totally expected and will be things we will take care of back at our home base. Our goal for this car isn't to make the baddest, fastest or best 818. We want a fun drivable street car and be able to tell our readers about the experience and hopefully be able to brag about how much car you have for the money invested, which i'm sure we will. The cool thing about these and other kit cars is how far and differently you can go about the finish work. Keep an eye on the thread, updates will begin tomorrow morning!

Really hope the build does a lot for both the 818 community and your magazine!

Thank you, so do we!

Well day one went great! Started stripping the donor at 10AM and hauled the carcass out at 3 PM including a 1+ hour lunch.
Here's Tim Suddard next to the carcass on the forks

And sitting in the middle of all the donor parts

It's a fairly straight forward build with upgrades planned in the future. 2004 WRX donor, Electromotive ECU, AIM dash, SpecClutch, VCP wiring harness. Going to be white for now, body wrapped in the near future. Thanks to Electromotive, AIM Sports, SpecClutch for sponsoring the above parts.

2 Guys stripped the Donor in 4 hours, 6 days to build?, i'm impressed.

Wayne Presley
07-25-2013, 06:44 AM
3.5 guys stripped the donor in 4 hours = 14 man hours with power tools, all the tools needed laid out within arms reach and one of the guys has taken apart 4 prior cars :D

Mechie3
07-25-2013, 08:08 AM
It probably helps too knowing what parts you need. Those of us who took apart donors a year ago had to save every last bolt. Now, we could probably throw 1/2 of those bolts in the trash and be no further behind.

Any cleanup planned for the parts or just a mild wipe/wash down.

Are you going for a straight donor build?

Correct, with upgrades planned in the future as we see fit. This is new to us and everyone so basically we'll build it "remotely" stock then move forward from there.

Getting a first glimpse at our new kit:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff515/tomsuddard/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818ShippingCondition.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/tomsuddard/media/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818ShippingCondition.jpg.html)

Our 04 WRX Donor car, ready for surgery:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff515/tomsuddard/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818DonorCar.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/tomsuddard/media/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818DonorCar.jpg.html)

The tool of champions, a sharpie. We don't want to misplace or not know what certain parts are during the build, which is why every part will be bagged and tagged:

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff515/tomsuddard/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818Sharpies.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/tomsuddard/media/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818Sharpies.jpg.html)

Body panels taped together, for now.

http://i1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff515/tomsuddard/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818TapedSeams.jpg (http://s1239.photobucket.com/user/tomsuddard/media/Photobucket%20Desktop%20-%20Toms%20MacBook%20Pro/Factory%20Five%20818/818TapedSeams.jpg.html)

The project didn't look terribly daunting until the guys noted the additional boxes in the kit:

I'm not positive what kind of cleanup the guys are planning, but knowing Tim, there will most definitely be a wipe-down at bare minimum!

Building a car in a week isn't easy, but it can be done with a lot of prep work. Ohio Cobra Club built a MkIV Roadster in 7 days a couple years ago and we had a blast doing it:

And if you notice the bolts are not tight and have been flipped around on the car. The lateral and toe link bolt is frozen in the link bushings and the rears corners were put on to be able to show installation of the suspension. They will be corrected by the time GRM comes for the next 3 day build session.

Awesome! I've noticed the springs didn't look stock, and that certainly isn't a stock clutch either. It can be good (or bad, depending on your POV) to find extra little goodies!

Indeed, i've been noticing the mods on the wrx as I continue to go through photos. Looks like it had a fair share of bolt-ons, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

In Episode 13 video, he talk about swapping the front/rear on the master cylinder because of the actuation timing. Can someone explain this to me.
Bob

Wayne Presley
08-22-2013, 10:10 PM
The piston closest to the pushrod moves first so it needs to apply the front brakes. The pistons are separated by fluid so there is a slight delay between pressure building in the rear system vs the front. You don't want the rears to lock first...

Thanks Wayne, I did not know that.
Also, Is the proportioning valve is on the front because lower weight and bigger calipers?

The weight bias is shifted toward the rear and the larger brakes are on the front so you have to reduce the brake pressure bias in the front system to get balanced braking.

That shifter, is it the one supplied by FFR (or one used from donor if it's a part FFR says we need from donor)?

Looks to me Wayne is carefully supervising the "grinding in the air", while walking around with his sleeping bag. Big Brother's watching!

Wayne: dang old folks. Never should have let them out of the home.

I stayed at my brother's house in Boone, NC. Rode "The Snake" on hwy 421, the blue ridge parkway, and many other surrounding roads. Deals gap has gotten way too crowded for my tastes, especially during peak season. I much prefer visiting the Boone area to ride.

Yes i did, needed to figure out how much the motor moves in order to determine whether a mesh exit will work. You'll notice a V-band clamp after the muffler to facilitate easy tailpipe changes.

The AIM dash is really cool. It can display all of the Electromotive data in real time, has programmable shift lights, 6 warning lights and can be had in a version that does lap timing, G loads, track mapping and control cameras.

Frank818

So far it's on my top list for my dash. RacePack is too, but I sort of understood the AIM does a little more. I feel I will buy a lot of parts from VCP. :) If only I could sell my car, I could finally start my 818 project... time, time...

Can TEC be hooked up with the fuel level sensor as well or that's independent?
On my DTA it's not possible to wire that sensor as it controls nothing, but I thought one stand alone could use it to trigger a warning light, that would be interesting.

So far what I understood is that usually it should be as close as possible to the head. The closer the faster the reading and heat will keep it up to temp. Not sure if it can burn up though.

That is where you want to put them. When you put them before the turbo the sensor can be subjected to up to 35psi and much greater heat than after the turbo. Clock the sensors between 10 and 2 o'clock so the sensor does not fill up with condensation.

With a narrow band sensor, you want the sensor between 12 and 18" from the exhaust port for them to be in their correct temperature range. Too close and they get too hot and too far they are too cold to give an accurate response to a given gas sample. Wide band sensors do not have the issue of getting too cold as they have a regulated heater to maintain the sensor temp. Some narrow band sensors have heaters but they are more of a prewarmer until the exhaust gasses heat them, for cold start emissions.

Frank818
09-13-2013, 08:39 AM
Oh yeah I remember now, I think around 3inches AFTER the turbo outlet is where you want the wide-band sensor to be. Anyway that's where yours is if I recall the picture (that I can't see when at work cuz they block photobucket and other places).

Mechie3

The one on my 06 WRX was about 4" back from the turbo outlet. Lasted 4 years without issues before the car was wrecked. It's going on my 818 in the same spot.

If you are going catless you only need 1 O2 sensor for sure.

And if you're using a stand alone, like TEC, and a cat, do you really need 2 sensors?

I think Mitch was referring to an aftermarket wideband sensor for a gauge. That's what I was referring to at least.

I think it will be fine... looks like you still have several inches in the bottom and pretty much the whole depth at the top.

I think it will be fine... looks like you still have several inches in the bottom and pretty much the hole depth at the to.

I think you are quite right about the depth. The doors are plenty deep enough for even the very best speakers. But because its an open car with lots of wind and road noise, for adequate volume and sound reproduction, I will want to mount my speakers as high as possible in the doors -- which means installing in the upper recess. And because I don't want to take up precious and limited space in the car with a subwoofer, my plan was to install the largest and highest quality coaxial or three-way speaker I can buy. The goal is a really good 6 X 9. But there may not be sufficient vertical space (at least 6") in the upper recess. Which means I may need to go smaller -- which will cost me some bass response. Or get really creative with the speaker mounting process...... In any event, that's why I'm concerned about the vertical dimension of the upper recess. Hopefully, GRM or someone else who has the new door panels will be able to measure the recesses and post the results. If not -- well, my kit will probably be delivered next week. If the new panels are included and not backordered, I'll be able to measure them myself. But that's a big if............. ! :p

Apologies for the thread-jack. I know there is a more suitable thread for discussing stereo systems. I won't discuss that any more here. I just need to know the vertical dimensions and depth of the new inner door panel upper recesses.

That would be the thread I started here (http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?10784-THE-Audio-System-Thread). I"m in the same situation, I will be installing an audio system, and am anxiously looking for any info on mounting options in the door panels.

my plan was to install the largest and highest quality coaxial or three-way speaker I can buy. The goal is a really good 6 X 9. .

FYI, for sound quality forget about coaxial speakers or most 6x9's!!! Get a good set of component speakers (with separate woofers, tweeters and cross-overs network). This lets you mount the tweeter higher in the door for better stereo imaging. The woofer, which handles harder to localize low frequencies, can then be mounted lower in the panel without issues. There are lots of quality component systems with 5.25" and 6.5" woofers (and some 6x9). If 6.5" doesn't fit, I'm optimistic there will be a good location for a 5.25" (but that would likely require a sub for decent bass).

Let's move any further discussion over to the audio system thread; I wanted to make sure to point it out here so it wasn't missed.

Agreed. Shifting this conversation to the audio thread. But I'm still hoping someone gets us a measurement on the height of that upper recess in the inner door panel! Wouldn't mind a vertical and horizontal measurement on the space directly in front of that upper recess (toward the door hinges) as well.

I also found a tape measure in the midst of all the fun:

The only place to logically mount a speaker is in that indention in the middle of the door panel. The indention measures approx 20" wide by 6.5" tall. It is recessed 2" into the door panel. I see no issues mounting a 6.5" round or 6x9 speaker in that space.

I will have more photos from the build soon, hopefully later today.

Thanks for the comeback on that. It's much appreciated. But for clarity, are those the dimensions for the upper or lower indentation/recess? If it's for the lower, I would really appreciate a measurement on the upper as well. At minimum, I'd like to at least put a tweeter in the upper........

The upper indention measures 26"x5" and isn't recessed enough for measurement. It is very slight. Basically I envision a tweeter mounted in this spot then a regular speaker mounted in the lower indention. If you guys have any other questions or need pics of things just let me know, as the 818 should be in the showroom for a week or two.

Thanks for the clarification. While I was hoping that the upper recess was the 6 1/2" number you quoted, I figured it wasn't. Just looked too small. I'll probably stick a component set in the doors with a 6 1/2 in the lower recess and the tweeter up high. It'll work. Thanks again.

Actually, I did think of one more question relating to the door indents/recesses.......... Do you have any idea how much depth there is in the door BEHIND the lower recess? Based on the photos, there appears to be a fair amount. Hoping for about three inches at minimum......

Not sure on exacts but there is definitely room between the door and door panel to fit a speaker.

After completing the build, we weighed it:

Then it's test drive time. But first, we needed some gas:

We have the car back in Florida and all is well. Many thanks to Wayne for helping us out on the build. We all had our fun test driving it last week, and now the car resides in our showroom. Up next, the car will be getting a vinyl wrap and hitting the track for some baseline tests. I will keep the thread up to date as we do things with the car.

Over 1900 lbs on a donor build with bare bones interior and no gas. Kind of disappointing but expected after what the car weighed at the open house with aftermarket brakes and seats.:(

Wayne made his own mounts for the GRM car... I just got my stock seats in mine using their new mounts. They could lower them an additional inch tho... At 5' 8" I fit fine with the new mounts. See photos on my thread

Is there a safe way to remove the seat airbags?

RM1SepEx
10-08-2013, 06:14 PM
Yes! Just did mine today. Flip the seat over and unzip the back panel. the panel tucks underneath with plastic clips. Carefully pull the wires through the space between the seat pan and the back. The wire is held to the pan by tape, just tear it away. Next cut/remove the two hog rings holding the side panel of the seat tight. Remove the two nuts and you can pull the airbag out. Fill in the space with some stiff foam. Either replace the hog rings or use a couple tie wraps to hold the side panel tight. Zip up the rear panel, re clip the panel at the bottom...

Done!
