Mine have always just unbolted and pull it straight off. Didn't know there was a press-on type water pump pulley for ford's.

I usually use the serpentine belt to grip the pulley while breaking the bolts loose. If you're getting rid of the old pulley and not concerned with damaging it, just use some vice grips.

Or maybe a puller? Your local parts store should have a loaner.

You should be able to pull it straight off by hand. Grab each side and wiggle it forward.

The only thread-on pulleys are used in Ford's truck applications (Ranger, Explorer, F-series), the Mustang uses a simple four-bolt hub. If all four bolts are removed it must be paint/powder coat or surface rust sticking it to the hub of the pump. Use a rubber mallet and give face of the pulley, towards the edge where the belt runs, a tap with the mallet. It might take a few hits, but it'll pop free.

I agree with Mustang Man. If you have the four bolts (or studs) out, it'll pop free when you whck on the pulley a couple times (be gentle, cause I bent one once). Up here in Michigan we gotta pound on everything to get it off.

Ford made the shaft with a very slight taper, so that the pulley and spacer hub would be a tight fit. My father bought a new 1968 Ford when I was in high school and the factory service manuals. When the water pump finally failed, I was fighting the same problem, when dad read me the installation instructions for pulley ,spacer and fan from the book. It made note of the taper and spec'd a bolt tightening pattern and torque. To remove use a small tune-up hammer ( about 4 lbs.).
