Not having much luck finding donors here in Canada. 2002 imprezza RS's are going for 5k plus. And not one pick yourself scrap yard has any subarus 2002+. I'm thinking about picking this one up, part out everything I don't need and pair it with a ver. 7 or 8 STI motor. Not sure what I'll get for the part out, anyone know what brakes would be on this?
Thanks guys!

Car looks awesome. I bet you could sell that motor for $2000 if you could get it running.
Seems too good to be true. Why would they not want to fix it?
I think the rotors were smaller... 11.4? in WRX vs. 10.7 in the std Impreza

That's the economy here, people have more money than time. And shops charge a lot, mom and pop shops charge $100+/hr, bigger shops with a decent rep charge unreal amounts. I'll go look at it, the KM's make me suspicious. That's like 20k miles!

But it's only $5k canadian, eh? That's only like.....well, $4800 USD. ;)
Any possibility of finding a US donor and getting it over the border or is it not worth the hassle?

The border is 6+hrs away, and I'd have to pay duties, get a trailer, etc. I seen the car, looks like someone went for a joy ride in a new car. Interior and engine bay is mint! Engine tries to start, belts are spinning. Waiting on car proof, picking it up tomorrow!

If it is only $3300 USD, it's not a bad price at all.

Mechie3-
I was thinking the same thing. I doubt you would find too may opportunities like that no matter where you were looking. Even if your build is way down the line, it is worth going after now, and you could take your time with the tear down, sell a few parts, source whatever is needed, make whatever repairs are required, and finalize a build plan. I would guess that you have an even better chance at recovering your initial spend with so modest (relatively) a purchase price.
Let us know how it goes up there our neighbor to the North!

Steve

At these very recent days exchange rate, CAD$5k is about USD$4650 including around 3 cents of profit for the financial institution doing the conversion and giving you the money.
No idea where the USD3300 came from, that's CAD0.66 for USD1.00 (spot on the GBP/USD rate), if you get that bad an exchange rate, I'll finance you directly for better! :)

Thanks guys, thought I'd never find one here. I'm going to try to get it started first, and if so probably drive it for a few weeks. If I'm lucky I'll find a buyer for the engine before pulling it.
Delivery was estimated for the end of September, but still no call yet. However I think I'll push delivery until February, still need to source an engine, prep parts, etc. Seems like a long time, but with our winters, and the roads being sanded so much, it'll be may before the roads are swept and I can drive it. So I'll just have everything ready for when it gets here. Maybe by then there will be more refinements or new colours.

Talk about our stupid winters in Canada. :) But it makes our summer times in the 818 a lot more interesting cuz it's been months without using it and we know in a few months we'll be months without using it again! :D

Finally had a few minutes to try to find out what's wrong with the engine today. It cranks fine, fuel pump is working, got spark. Spark plugs were black though. No idea if the injectors are firing or if there's pressure in the fuel rails, gotta do some interweb reading on that. What's troubling is, the passengers side timing belt cover is smoking while cranking it over. That's no good. I'll pop off the cover this week, see what smoking, see if the marks are aligned. If I can get this motor running, I can get a lot more for it towards the JDM v8.

Funny you mention it being difficult to find a donor in Canada. When I built my RS, I sourced my JDM parts through a Canadian shop. Ended up going version 8 STI. I could get you their info if you need it.

You sure it's not a coil pack cooking? Yeah get those covers off and see whats leaking back there. Might be a cracked head or a very bad head gasket.
