View Full Version : Shipping or Pickup - What are you doing?

Curious what everyone's plans are that have an order in place.

Are you shipping or picking up yourself?

I am located in Southern Maryland and considering picking up depending on the price of shipping. Not sure what it will be as I don't think too many people have gotten their kits yet, and quite a few seem to have picked up so far. :)

Any idea on anticipated costs (Say shipping on east coast, west coast, etc)?

I just checked freight prices on line. From FFR to OKC, using their crate size and assuming 1200 lbs, cheapest price I got was $2050.00

looking further into this matter, the real question is what class is a crated 818? class 50, class 85? class 250? as going from lowest to highest class for the smale crate, it goes from 600$ - 3000$

considering it will cost me almost 4k for delivery to my place (on the west coast of Canada) I plan on picking up whichever car I buy from the factory. Besides it will give me an excuse to check out FFr.

ROAD TRIP!!! :D

If I lived as close as MD, I'd definitely be picking it up. Where I live, that's not a feasible o cost effective option so I'll be using Stewart (no crate).

At this point, I think we'll be picking up unless it comes back cheaper than what I'm hearing here.

I will pick mine up. I live in Florida but I still can drive up and back for less than the shippers quote. I highly recommend the visit and tour of FFR.

After a long debate I will pick it up on a flatbed trailer. Going to use my friends new F150... much more comfortable than my old busted Suburban.

If fairly local, I have a 2011 Hallmark enclosed trailer, I would be happy to assist (you pay for the gas and grub).

I think I'd do the same, I estimate 3000+ for shipping, might as well drive down (as least they are same time zone for me) to pick it up. Some nice couple of days vacations for next year. :) And of course it's gonna rain all the time, but hey, I'd pick up an 818 so who cares! lolll

Doofoo-

It looks like enough people have weighed in, but I will throw in my $.02 anyway. I plan on making it a road trip with one or both of my boys and we can all tour the Factory and meet some of the folks there at FF. Although I have toured the Factory, Thing 1 and Thing 2 have not, so I think they would get a kick out of seeing it, and getting the opportunity to see the real "before" of the before and after pictures! The Factory tour is worth the trip, and from Maryland, it's really not that bad of a drive; especially if you go up the Western route, rather than I-95 if you have a choice. A bit longer, but you will arrive far more sane. ;-o)

Good luck, whatever you decide!

Regards,

Steve

Why are you not talking with Factory Five and Stewart Transportation? They ship all over the country...I want to say that 4 years ago shipping for my cobra from FFR to Lower Alabama was around $1500...shoot my donor was shipped from NJ to alabama for $1350...granted you will have to wait for the entire truck to get loaded with everybody elses cars (GTMs, Cobras...) but I am almost sure they will be beat any other individual ship attempt... my.02

Shipping via Stewart. They quoted $1300 to my door in Indy. I could probably fly in to Boston, get a rental to Wareham, get a U haul there, but I'm out of time. I have scuba diving lessons the day my kit is ready and I don't want to wait a few more weekends to pick it up.

We priced out fuel, food and everything from southern maryland and it would be under $400 for us to travel and pick it up. Going for a tour at FFR would also be great. So we're going to try and leave Friday night, arrive Saturday morning for the tour and pickup if that's allowed.

Same here... I don't have enough vacation time for a coast to coast road-trip, and a one-way ticket, truck rental, gas and hotels will add up to more than Stewart.

Around 1000 round trip from Southern Maryland (avoiding the tolls and crazy roads). 12.5mpg average when we tow the larger enclosed trailer.

In my case it's a 750miles round trip (about 6-8h including customs), but across border.
I guess I can make it much under $3k, including a FFR Tour... I'll check it out to make sure.

I think your plan is solid! A few bucks on gas (well, more than a little, but you get the idea)! A couple of meals on the road, a night in MA, and picking up your new ride. The Saturday tour of FFR is a great way to get fired up for your build!! It is a pretty cool place, and they do a great job of showing how the sausage is made! Plus, they are all great people!!

Have a safe trip and enjoy!!

Steve

Anyone else from MD, VA, PA or NC getting theirs around November? We can probably transport 2 to help cut down on costs if so. I'm trying to get on the hot-list, so unsure if it might pop up beforehand. But would be nice to arrange to transport 2 at a time. :)

yup 1900 for stewart to deliver to california. good price cause with gas, food, rental costs, and time off work I wouldn't be able to do it myself. Woot can't wait. Getting the engine build starting this month and ordering a bunch of goodies in August and I should be ready :D

I live on North Fork of Long Island and planning on picking up my Coupe. Will take ferry to New London Ct. and drive to FFR. Will be renting enclosed U-Haul or some equal type of truck. Will return same way from FFR in one day. Not sure what length of truck to rent yet.

Going to pick up my kit on Aug 12.
For a tow vehicle I probably use my chevy 1500 van. My son wants to use my original donor vehicle to get it. Bob G

That would be so cool but I think you may need to be creative and store some boxes inside the kit and cover it all up to protect it from the wind and weather...

looks like ill need to call and verify my price. Looks like I should be about to do it for 1500 - 1600$. Too bad I have to have it crated. I would prefer to use that money on having the frame powder coated.

So a 8.5x16 ft is enough to place the frame, panels and hardware boxes?

I know in another thread someone gave the dimensions, but I can't find that post anymore.

I'm in northern VA, but I'm way down on the list compared to you. I'll be waiting well into 2014 to get mine.

I'd love to come up to your place when you get yours and spend a couple hours working on your project.

$1400 to Atlanta.. Just don't have the time to go get it..

Same quote for me to Peachtree City. Figured fuel, food, hotel stay, and time it was the way to go. Matter of fact they should be calling me in a few days for payment.

You guys need to update your profile so we know where you are. I could have had you two come buy and help pull the motor last weekend..

I am actually in Lawrenceville.

Peachtree City, Lawrenceville, Douglasville..... Sounds like we all need to get together and have an adult beverage.

Any particular reason you're having it crated to ship to OKC? Stewart delivered my base roadster kit to the OKC area, in May, for $1300.

Sure.. I'll let you know when we get the kit. We are on the hot-list now, confirmed by FFR.

Going to pickup one donor car tomorrow, so we'll be getting started on the donor prep soon. I'll be setting up a website to follow the progress, and starting a thread here as well.
